Eppure, ancora in vita, era già una leggenda. Le numerose disgrazie che colpirono la sua famiglia (l'esecuzione del fratello Massimiliano, il suicidio del figlio Rodolfo, l'omicidio di sua moglie Sissi) e la lunghezza del suo regno non sono state estranee all'edificazione di tale mitologia. La sua immagine trattenuta nella memoria collettiva non è altro che il volto del vecchio imperatore adornato da enormi favoriti. Ma, soprattutto, erede della dinastia più antica d'Europa e "ultimo monarca della vecchia scuola", come lui stesso si definiva, impersonificò maestosamente un'idea forte della monarchia e del potere. Sicuramente commise non pochi errori, specialmente l'aver permesso lo sviluppo, attraverso la sua inazione dopo il 1867, delle conseguenze negative del dualismo tra Austria e Ungheria. Nello stesso tempo seppe contenere solo in maniera blanda le spinte autonomiste provenienti dai popoli del suo impero e dai suoi cinquanta milioni di sudditi, di diversa appartenenza etnica. Infatti, durante i sessantotto anni del suo regno, dalle rivoluzioni del 1848 all'apocalisse della Prima guerra mondiale, l'impero fu al centro del confronto tra due logiche e due culture opposte, lo Stato multinazionale e lo Stato-nazione. Attraverso questa lotta, fu il destino dell'Europa a compiersi. Questo libro rappresenta uno studio centrale sulla figura di un sovrano la cui modernità oggi viene profilandosi in maniera netta.

Tight attractive first edition of this essay by the superb Minnesota historian and published by this interesting small Wisconsin press limited to 780 copies. Best of all this copy is boldly inscribed and signed by the author in black ink on front flyleaf: "To Erik Reed / with the good wishes / of the author / Theodore C. Blegen." Reed was a well-known National Park Service archaeologist in the southwest. Signed copies of this title are rarely seen. The light green binding is seen far less often than the tan cloth version although no priority is established. Tipped in at rear is a finely printed 1p 5 3/4" X 9�" handbill promoting this title. " Levy as a woolen commission agent in New York City was unsatisifed with the quality of goods he was expected to sell and told a mill owner "Either get yourself a new mill superintendent or a new selling agent. " The mill owner got a new selling agent but undaunted Levy leased the Greenville Mill In Greenville Rhode Island a plant of forty looms with dyeing and finishing facilities renamed the company Stillwater Wortsted Mills and set out to produce quality cloth in 1909.
