Memories: The Story of Imperial's First Century as Told by Its Employees and Annuitants
Toronto: Imperial Oil 1980. vi 148 pages. Letter from CEO of Imperial Oil loosely laid-in. Covers are brown textured flexible card printed with title and ornament in gilt. Contents printed in black on cream-coloured textured paper with initials ornaments and page numbers in brown - quite elegant. Soft card cover shows virtually no wear; spine square and uncreased binding tight; lower corner shows minor shelfsoil at tip. Minor bends to corners of prelims microscopic nick to title page fore edge but in general the book appears near-new and unread: clean bright and crisp throughout. Imperial Oil enlisted the help of Barry Broadfoot who pioneered the writing of popular oral histories in Canada with The Pioneer Years and other bestsellers to carry out the bulk of the interviews across the country; Mark Nichols acted as editor. A very human and appealing book full of interesting stories. BROADWATER JEFF
George Mason Forgotten Founder
The University of North Carolina Press Chapel Hill & London: 2006. Hardcover with dustjacket. Brand new book. 2006 Richard Slatten Prize for Excellence in Virginia Biography Virginia Historical Society. George Mason 1725-92 is often omitted from the small circle of founding fathers celebrated today but in his service to America he was in the words of Thomas Jefferson "of the first order of greatness." Jeff Broadwater provides a comprehensive account of Mason's life at the center of the momentous events of eighteenth-century America. Mason played a key role in the Stamp Act Crisis the American Revolution and the drafting of Virginia's first state constitution. He is perhaps best known as author of the Virginia Declaration of Rights a document often hailed as the model for the Bill of Rights. As a Virginia delegate to the Constitutional Convention in Philadelphia Mason influenced the emerging Constitution on point after point. Yet when he was rebuffed in his efforts to add a bill of rights and concluded the document did too little to protect the interests of the South he refused to sign the final draft. Broadwater argues that Mason's recalcitrance was not the act of an isolated dissenter; rather it emerged from the ideology of the American Revolution. Mason's concerns about the abuse of political power Broadwater shows went to the essence of the American experience. Jeff Broadwater is associate professor of history at Barton College in Wilson North Carolina. He is author of Eisenhower and the Anti-Communist Crusade and Adlai Stevenson and American Politics: The Odyssey of a Cold War Liberal. "Fills a major gap in modern biographies of significant Revolutionary figures. . . . Thoroughly researched and well-written." - Town & County "A compelling case." - Register of the Kentucky Historical Society "Our understanding of the American founding is impoverished by neglecting the thoughts words and deeds of forgotten founders like George Mason. Broadwater's biography rightly gives the gentleman planter from Gunston Hall his due." - The Virginia Magazine of History and Biography "Broadwater produces a carefully drawn balanced account of the career of the intelligent but crotchety figure." American Historical Review The author does justice to Mason . . . particularly as opposition leader against statism power elitism and the slave trade and as champion of individual rights. - CHOICE "Broadwater's biography of George Mason is important because of the subject. It is also important because it shows us in great detail the foundation of Virginia and American government at a time when many of us seem to be wandering in the wilderness without a map." --Roanoke Times The University of North Carolina Press, Chapel Hill & London: 2006 hardcover

Lucy IN THE AFTERNOON - an intimate memoir of Lucille Ball.
UK8vo HBdw/dj1st edn.FINE/FINE.No owner inscrptnand no price-clip to dw/dj.8vo271pp includes b/w photographs and an index. 'The most beloved star in show business' was how Ed Sullivan described Lucille Ball. For twenty three years she andfor most of the timeher producer and co-starring husbandDesi Arnazwound their way into the hearts of an adoring world-wide public with 'I Love Lucy' 'The Lucy Show' and 'Here's Lucy'.They were the most famously married couple in America. The birth of Desi Jnr. upstaged the inauguration of President Eisenhower. When Lucy and Desi divorced 'I Love Lucy' ended their friends were distraught.Happily their professional partnership survived their matrimonal one. Lucille Ball was the Goldwyn Girl who became Queen of the B's and ended up buying RKO the studio in which she had learned her craft. She worked with all of the Hollywood greats - Orson Welles Katherine Hepburn Joan Crawford Henry Fonda Judy Garland Jack Benny. Then in Aug 1988 she added Jim Brochu to her inner circle of friends. BROCHU had sent her a play to read.Because he was also a mega-fan he followed it with two hundred roses and a challenge to a game of back-gammon.Lucy now in her seveties was recovering from a stroke and a slight heart attack but she accepted the challenge and that was the start of a magical nine months for BROCHU the devoted fan who visited Lucy in the afternoons for back-gammon lemonade and laughter and gradually became the indispensable friend and confidant who saw her right up to the week of her death. Over the months Lucy opened up the most personal memories of her private and professional life the difficulties of her marriage to Desi;the creation of their film empire;her relationship with her public;and her views on the stars who queued to be on her show. The result is a delightfully informal and individual tribute to the queen of comedy from a very loving friend.
