Signori degli Appennini", promossa dal Comune di Apecchio, rappresenta non solo la prima importante mostra d'arte che si tiene nel paese, ma anche la prima mai realizzata su questa nobile stirpe. Si può ben dire che questo progetto è stata un'avventura ambiziosa, in quanto tutto era da costruire e l'emergenza sanitaria che ha investito il mondo intero ha causato modifiche e rimandi, ma non ha fermato l'entusiasmo che ha contraddistinto ogni collaboratore. Ciascuno è stato realmente mosso dal desiderio di riscoprire questa storia, che di fatto rappresenta l'essenza del territorio che ne è stato teatro. Si è scelto Palazzo Ubaldini, in quanto residenza della famiglia e sede naturale atta ad ospitare le pregevoli opere giunte da tutto il territorio e da privati. Per la prima volta dopo secoli le stanze si sono trovate ad accogliere nuovamente le collezioni Ubaldini. Per questa mostra si è scelto di realizzare un allestimento sobrio che lasciasse parlare le opere, le vere testimoni narranti. Gli Ubaldini dunque, stirpe di origine gotica giunta nella penisola italiana al tempo della guerra tra l'Impero bizantino e gli Ostrogoti (535 - 553) e stanziatasi nell'Appennino toscano, giunse ad abitare nelle zone di Apecchio già dalla fine del Duecento. Ne ottenne il titolo comitale nel 1514 e lo detenne fino al 1752 con la morte dell'ultimo conte Federico II. Il loro apporto fu di natura economica, in quanto famosi capitani di compagnie composte da valorosi soldati provenienti dall'Appennino, ma anche culturale. Negli ultimi anni il mondo della ricerca si è occupato di riportare alla luce e studiare i personaggi e gli eventi in cui sono stati protagonisti. La loro storia infatti era rimasta in ombra nella tradizione storiografica a causa della damnatio memoriae subita da Ottaviano Ubal-dini, uno dei più illustri esponenti. In realtà le personalità della famiglia hanno partecipato agli eventi più importanti del Medioevo e del Rinascimento italiano. L'obiettivo di questa mostra è stato quindi quello di raccogliere gli ultimi studi fatti in merito per ritracciare la storia, ricostruendone i tratti salienti e dando voce ai personaggi che hanno segnato le fasi di svolta dell'ascesa della casata ed il suo ruolo nella storia italiana.
