‎Première édition complète des trois volumes (le premier volume paru en 1657 et le second en 1659), bien conforme à la description de Tchemerzine-Scheler (II-p.784-785 ; Brunet, II-611).Ces lettres, qui concernent les sujets abordés par Descartes dans ses ouvrages, lui permettent souvent de préciser ou de moduler sa pensée et quelquefois d'aller encore plus loin, ce qui fait tout l'intérêt de l'ouvrage ; elles sont adressées principalement à la Reine de Suède, à la Princesse Elizabeth de Bohême, au sieur Charrut, au R.P. de Mersenne, à M. Clerselier et bien-sûr en réponse à de nombreuses demandes de précisions ou controverses diverses et notamment aux attaques inouïes et déloyales de M. Voet. Quelques petits défauts aux reliures (deux coiffes supérieures usées restaurées en vélin, mors du tome I fendu, ceux de tome II fendillés) mais bel ensemble tout de même, intérieur en bon état.‎

Februar 1896 in Würzburg geboren. 1910 Umzug der Familie nach München. Studium der Kunstgeschichte, Abschluss mit Dr. phil. Teilnahme am 1. Weltkrieg, Einsatz im Balkan. In den 20er Jahren wurden erste Theaterstücke von Eugen Diem in München aufgeführt. 1931 Literaturpreis der Volksbühne München. Er veröffentlichte Künstlermonographien, die teils zu Standardwerken der Kunstgeschichte wurden, und arbeitete als Kritiker für Zeitschriften. 1939 Weigerung einen Artikel über Mussolini im Sinne der Partei zu schreiben. Daraufhin Flucht nach Jugoslawien. 1941, nach der Besetzung Jugoslawiens, Rückkehr unter falschem Namen. Er lebt zunächst in Berlin, dann bei Karlsruhe. Nach dem Krieg kehrt er nach München zurück. Tätigkeit im Kunsthandel. Sein Werk umfasste neben dramatischen, essayistischen und kunsthistorischen Arbeiten auch Lyrik.‎

Opera invero originale ed assai intrigante, con risvolti di approfondimento antropologico e culturale notevoli. In ottimo stato, scarsamente reperibile, di alto interesse.‎

Franzband in rotem Kalbsleder auf 5 echten Bünden mit 2 goldgeprägten Lederrückenschildern und dekorativer Rückenvergoldung, reicher Steh- und Innenkantenvergoldung, filigranem goldgeprägtem Rahmen auf beiden Deckeln und dreiseitigem Goldschnitt. Dreifarbig handumstochene Kapitale. Sehr gut erhaltene Ausgabe in luxuriöser Ausführung. Das empfindliche Leder an den Deckeln minimal berieben. Exemplar mit historisch interessanter Provenienz. Schönes Exlibris Dr. Georg Landauer (sitzende Katze im linken Profil mit dem Leitspruch "Ganz oder gar nicht" und handschriftlicher Numerierung 505) am Innendeckel. ‎Frühe Ausgabe ein Jahr nach der Erstveröffentlichung 1895. George Louis Palmella Busson du Maurier (1834-1896) war ein bedeutender Karikaturist (Punch u.a. ) des viktorianischen England und Autor von drei heute wenig bekannten Romanen, u.a. "Peter Ibbetson" . Im Mittelpunkt seines bekanntesten Roman "Trilby" stehen drei englische Maler, die sich ein Atelier im Pariser Quartier Latin teilen und dort das zauberhafte Modell Trilby - die Titelfigur- sowie den unangenehmen, aber hochmusikalischen Hypnotiseur Svengali kennenlernen. Jahre später begegnen sich die Protagonisten in London wieder. Die völlig unmusikalische Trilby ist inzwischen eine gefeierte Sängerin, weil Svengali sie in Hypnose versetzt und zu seinem Instrument gemacht hat, durch das er seine eigene Musikalität zum Ausdruck bringt. Mit der Figur des jüdischen Hypnotiseurs Svengali schuf George du Maurier den Prototyp eines Menschen, der eine finstere Macht über andere gewinnt und sie negativ manipuliert. Dabei bedient er nicht nur das aufkommende Interesse an Hypnose, Mesmerismus und der Entdeckung des Unterbewußtseins, sondern auch die antisemitischen Tendenzen seiner Zeit. Vgl. D. Pick, Svengali's Web (2000). Georg Landauer (1863-1943) stammte aus einer großbürgerlichen jüdischen Familie in Wien, die 1913 nach Bad Ischl umzog. Obgleich er 1920 mit seiner gesamten Familie konvertierte und praktizierender Katholik war, wurde 1938 nach der Annexion Österreichs die Arisierung seines Besitzes eingeleitet. Landauer konnte nach England emigrieren, wo er 1943 starb. Seine ca. 5000 Bände umfassende Bibliothek eignete sich die Studienbibliothek Linz an. Dem Rückstellungsantrag von Landauers Sohn, Dr. Adolf Landauer, wurde 1949 stattgegeben, jedoch umfasst das "Verzeichnis als Eigentum Dr. Georg Landauereschiedenen Bücher" nur 1300 Titel und auch diese wurden nicht vollständig zurückgegeben, sondern befinden sich z.T noch unkatalogisiert in den Beständen der Oberösterreichischen Landesbibliothek. Dr. Adolf Landauer verkaufte die zurückgegebenen Bücher nachweislich im antiquarischen Buchhandel in der Schweiz. Ob er nur die wervollereren Titel ausgesucht und auf die Rückgabe des Rests verzichtet hat, ist unklar.
