Beautifully figured tree calf. These three volumes represent the poetical works of John Dryden 1631-1700 and are numbered 40 41 and 42 on the spine gilt worn. Dryden was a poet and dramatist who dominated literary life in the latter half of the 17th century becoming Poet Laureate in 1670. A most attractive little set. The Third Edition. 4to. 12 68 p. / A� a� B-I� K�. A near fine copy save for a few minor stains bound in modern boards and quarter calf spine worn. A very pleasing copy aside from spine firm in binding. Modern bookplate to inside front paste down with a modern note in pencil to front blank which mentions Pepys having been much pleased with the performance he saw on Aug. 4th of 1664. Note also mentions that it was the Dryden dedication in this version that led directly to the great controversy resulting in the immortal work: Essay of Dramatic Poesy. Dryden's brother-in-law Sir Robert Howard was sceptical of the use of poetry in plays. <br/> <br/> printed by T[homas].
