These translations are regarded as one of Dryden's greatest works. This was the final work produced by Dryden as he died two months later. The work contains translations of the First Book of Homer's 'Iliad' eight selections from Ovid's 'Metamorphoses' three of Chaucer's 'Canterbury Tales' three stories from Boccaccio and many more translations including original poems by Dryden himself. With this work Dryden aimed to increase the reputation of English literature by adapting these classic works. All the translations to this work are in Dryden's heroic couplet. With the bookplate of the Marquess of Headfort to the front pastedown with his family arms. Possibly the bookplate of the Taylour Family either Thomas Taylour the 1st Marquess Headford or Thomas Taylour 2nd Marquess of Headfort. Complete with the Half-Title which reads 'Mr Dryden's Fables'. ESTC reference number R31983. With the signatures: A-C2 A-D2 chi1 A4 a2 B4-4B4 4C2 4D4-4N4 4O1 2chi1 Collated complete. John Dryden was a popular seventeenth century English poet and literary critic. His talents in Restoration England landed him the position of England's first Poet Laureate in 1668. A lovely first edition copy of this important work. Condition: In a contemporary mottled calf binding. Externally generally smart with light rubbing to the joints and to the extremities. Fading to the gilt at the spine. A few small worm holes to the rear board with the leather lifting slightly at the bottom of the joint. Leather is lifting to the head of the front joint. 92 1685 Book. Very Good. Hardcover. Two scarce poetical anthologies bound together as one. Both curated by Jacob Tonson the first work to this volume is 'Miscellany Poems in Two Parts'. The second work is 'Sylvae' 'Miscellany Poems' is the second edition of this work. 'Absalom and Achitophel. . Seventh Edition' 'The Medal. . Third Edition' and 'Virgil's Ecologues. . Printed in the Year' all have separate dated title pages but the pagination and register are continuous. This anthology of works contains translations of Virgil Ovid Lucretius Theocritus Horace and more. The majority of these works were by Dryden. Other contributors include Mr Creech and Mr Adams. ESTC No. R21069. The second work to this volume is 'Sylvae' or the second part of poetical miscellanies. This was the second in a series of miscellanies published by Tonson. Tonson curated this collection which eventually formed of many volumes with poems by Dryden Addison Pope and Prior. This particular volume has Dryden's translations of Virgil Lucretius Theocritus and Horace. There are a few other translations by Charles Dryden and Mr Stafford. With the bookplate of St John Anstruther Baronet. This bookplate is likely to belong to Sir John Anstruther 1st Baronet of Anstruther. Anstruther was a Scottish politician who sat in the Parliament of Scotland from 1702 to 1707 and in the British house of Commons from 1708 to 1741. The Dryden-Tonson poetry miscellanies were incredibly popular. They went through multiple editions and several volumes. Condition: In a full calf binding. Rebacked with the original boards preserved. Externally generally smart. Several marks and patches of light rubbing to boards. Prior owner's bookplate to recto of front endpaper Sir John Anstruther. Internally firmly bound. Loss to page 161-162 at the edge of 'Miscellany Poems'. Numerous pages of 30-200 of 'Miscellany Poems' are severely age toned with patches of foxing. Pages are otherwise generally bright with just the occasional light spots. Overall Condition: Very Good. 92 hardcover

With an illustrated frontispiece to each volume. Direct from the Regency library of Elizabeth Greenly later Lady Elizabeth Coffin Greenly. Elizabeth Greenly born at Titley Court Herefordshire was a noted and varied collector. She kept prolific diaries from 1784 until her death in 1839 which included her responses to current events and occasions in her daily life. Among the diaries many names and anecdotes of celebrities of the time appear including Lord Byron Marie Antoinette Mary Wollstonecraft and Hannah More. She was known to comment on customs of foreign countries to which she and her friends had travelled and had a keen interest in scientific discoveries and advancements including medicine and archaeology. The Greenly library contents show Elizabeth Greenly's numerous interests including: Welsh causes Science topography travel Bibliana and literature particularly female poets. The library contains many first editions of contemporary works and many are signed or contain her bookplate. The library contained over 1000 volumes which show the diversity and depth of her interests and give an insight into the life of this fascinating collector. The copy of Don Sebastian King of Portugal appears tohave been sourced from Volume VI of The Dramatick Works of John Dryden as the title page for this has been boundbefore the title page for the play. Don Sebastian is a Tragedy by John Dryden originally published in 1690. Ithas also been seen as a moral fable and arguably his bestplay. The Distrest Mother is a play by Ambrose Philips who wasbetter known as a poet andpolitician. Theodosius was first acted in 1680 and isa tragedy by Nathaniel Lee. TheConscious Lovers is a sentimentalcomedy in five acts by Irish playwright Richard Steele. The Fair Penitent is Nicholas Rowe's adaptation of the tragedy The Fatal Dowry. It premiered on stage in 1702 and was a great success throughout the 18th century. Condition: In a full calf binding with gilt stamping to spine. Externally a trifle rubbing to spine. Front joint is starting but firm. Front hinge is slightly strained but firm. Prior owner's bookplate to front pastedown E H Greenly. Internally generally firmly bound though strained in palces. A scarce fourth edition of this work. Being three volumes bound as one. Retaining all individual title pages. In English. ESTC reference no: T64521. Illustrated with thirty-three plates to volume I thirty-eight plates to volume II and thirty-three plates to volume III. An exquisitely printed copy of this work which became a standard translation of Virgil's works for generations. Comprising of Virgil's pastorals Georgics and Aeneid. With a life of Virgil to the start of the work by William Walsh. This translation was Dryden's defining work as a translator. Virgil is regarded as one of Rome's greatest poets. His 'Aeneid' is considered to be a national epic of Ancient Rome. It is modeled after Homer's 'Iliad' and 'Odyssey'. A smart copy of this work. Condition: In a quarter crushed morocco binding with cloth covered boards. Externally very smart with just some minor shleflwear to the spine. Internally firmly bound. Prior owner's inscription to the title page of volume I. Pages are bright. p. 107 of Georgics has a tape repair to the head due to closed tear. Second closed tear to pages 109-110. Prior owner's neat colourings to plate facing page 201 of Georgics and to the plates facing pages 335 and 496 of Aeneis. Occasional light spots. I engraved portrait title preceding main title 267pp; vol. II engraved vignette title preceding main title 300pp. Rubbing at spine edges more so at first volume and at extremities corners rubbed. Very mild staining at endpapers small bookplates evidently removed a little foxing at prelims. minimal at text.
