‎2 vol., roy. 8vo., Best Edition thus, with 2 frontispieces in photogravure, 10 fine plates in photogravure and 568 illustrations in the text; original red buckram, upper boards blocked and lettered in gilt, gilt backs, gilt tops, backstrips lightly faded (but all gilt entirely legible), a very good, bright, clean, crisp set. The set comprises: Vol. I: 1709 - March 18, 1776; Vol. II: March 19, 1776 - Dec. 13, 1784). 'Much the most fully and usefully illustrated of all the editions of the 'Life' (Pottle). The text is that of the fifth edition, broken into chapters, with variorum notes from Malone and Croker, and a few additional touches of original annotation. Ingpen's edition was first published by Pitman in 1907. 'In 1925 a new edition, entirely re-set, was printed by the Pitman Press. This is a page-for-page reprint of the earlier issues, with a few additional cuts, new plates for the full-page photogravures, and one extra plate. 'With this edition began the practice…of enlarging the text with unpublished letters which had not been available to Boswell…A considerable number of new notes were also added, including some by Dr. Kearney' (Pottle, pp.171-2). 'With this edition began the practice…of enlarging the text with unpublished letters which had not been available to Boswell…A considerable number of new notes were also added, including some by Dr. Kearney' (Pottle, pp.171-2).
