Subtitle to Vol. 1: "From the text of Mr. Upton etc. With the life of the author.Printed under the direction of J. Bell British Library Strand Bookseller to His Royal Highness the Prince of Wales." Brown calf covers have inside gilt dentelles gilt bands and star design on spine with title blocks in red leather on spine. All volumes show some wear at hinges but in no case is binding compromised. All have lightly bumped corners. Each has a bookplate pasted on front pastedown which has ghosted a bit to first free enedpaper. The armorial bookplates belonged to John Goodford. Vol. 1 has penciled bookseller's notes on front pastedown. The title page to each volume two per book states "Bell's Edition The Poets of Great Britain Complete from Chaucer to Churchill.over an illustration.Spencer Vol. ".and a caption to the illus. Some toning to the spines - most notably volumes 4 and 5. Some splitting to the inner hinges - most notably to volumes 2 & 5 where the binding cords have been exposed - the boards remain surprisingly firm; and to volume 4 where the boards remain attached but are shaken. It was Pickering who introduced cloth to the world of bookbinding probably in 1820. "After this beginning Pickering followed the practice throughout his publishing career. He was afterwards imitated by other publishers but the smooth red magenta puce or dark blue cloth used by Pickering remained for many years the distinguishing mark of his books . The use of cloth as a publisher's binding made little difference to the cost of the books and was a considerable economy from the buyer's point of view since the book could be used without the necessity for rebinding . The innovation thus quietly made by Pickering in 1820 has had its effect on the whole subsequent history of the publishing trade" Keynes p. 14. A "nobel fragment" -- a bound copy of Spenser's minor poems that originally would have included The Faerie Queene. Does not included "Mother Hubbard's Tale" which was included in second issues of this edition 1613 or later; thus this is the earliest issue of the first folio edition of these poems. Great woodcuts illustrate the Shepheards Calender. Many of the works have their own title pages. Occasional pen mark or marginal note from the time. Matthew Lownes unknown
