While he was an English writer known primarily for his work on military subjects he had wide interests. Earlier in his career he was the drama critic for London's Morning Post. Condition: In a green cloth binding with gilt lettering to the spine. Externally sound with slight rubbing. There is some bumping to the top and tail of the spine. Wilkinson was very well connected to key figures in politics and in the armed forces as he journalist and had long hoped for an academic appointment as his interests increasingly turned toward historical study. He was elected the first Chichele Professor of Military History in the University of Oxford and Fellow of All Souls College in 1909. During World War I he becamelike Clausewitz's foremost German proponent at the time Hans Delbrck--an energetic critic of his nation's counterproductive strategy and policy. He remained an influential voice in Britain until his death in 1937. Condition: In a red cloth binding with gilt title detail to spine. Externally generally sound with bumping to extremities a little loss of cloth at the head and tail and discolouration to the spine. The hinges are slightly strained. Internally binding is strained in places. Pages are generally bright and clean with light foxing to endpapers and a small closed tear to the top right corner of the front free endpaper. Illustrated frontis to each volume - 3 portraits and 3 sepia photographic views River Blackwater County Cork ; Ruins of Kilcolman Spenser's home in Ireland ; Glengarriff County Cork. each with a tissue guard. Each volume with an extra decorative title page. A fine and clean set with a few of the gatherings still unopened. Finely bound by Riviere in early twentieth century quarter vellum with single raised bands. Green title labels ruled and lettered in gilt. Arts and Crafts style tall flower design with stems leaves and flower in gilt to each spine. Blue cloth on boards. Top edges gilt others untrimmed. Some minor marks to the cloth on a few of the boards but the spines all clean and the gilt bright so the set looks great on the shelf. A very attractive set of vellum bindings.
