‎Hamburg, Rowohlt., 1959. 8° [12,8 : 19,5 cm]. 349 Seiten.

‎DIGBY (KENELM) AND RATTRAY (SYLVESTRI):‎

‎Theatrum Sympatheticum Auctum, exhibens Varios Authores de Pulvere Sympathetico quidem: Digbaeum, Straussinum, Papinium et Moyhum de Unguento vero Armario; Goclenium, Robertum, Helmontium, R. Fluddum, Beckerum, Borellum.... Praemittitur his Sylvestri Rattray, Aditus ad Sympathiam et Anti-Pathiam. Edition novissima, correctior, acution, multisq' parasangis melior.‎

‎Norimbergae, Apud Johan. Andeam Endterum, & Wolfgangi Junioris Haeredes. 1662. Thick 4to, 197 x 134 mms., pp. [viii], 722 [723 - 764 index], title-page printed in red and black, engraved vignette on page 125, recently rebound in dark chocolate sheepskin, gilt spine, black leather labels, new end-papers, including two dark brown ones (rather unsympathetic); title-page soiled and frayed, but a so-so to good copy, with the small library stamp of St. Patrick's College Library, Maynooth, on various pages (de-accessioned). The volume contains Digby's "Oratio de Pulvere sympathetico"; Laurentius Straussius's "Epistola ad Comitem Dygbaeum"; Nicolaus Papinus's "Dissertatio de Pulvere Sympathetico"; and Ercius Mohyus' "Pulvis Sympatheticus". Digby first described his well-known weapon-salve, or powder of sympathy, in the discourse alleged to have been delivered at Montpellier in 1658. Its method of employment stamps it as the merest quackery. The wound was never to be brought into contact with the powder, which was merely powdered vitriol. A bandage was to be taken from the wound, immersed in the powder, and kept there till the wound healed. Digby gives a fantastic account of the "sympathetic" principles involved. He says that he learned how to make and apply the drug from a Carmelite who had travelled in the East, and whom he met at Florence in 1622. He first employed it about 1624 to cure James Howell of a wound in his hand, and he adds that James I and Dr. Mayerne were greatly impressed by its efficacy, and that Bacon registered it in his scientific collections...(DNB). Lorenz Strauss [1633-1687] physician, professor of medicine at Giessen, court physician of the Landgrave of Hesse-Darmstadt. He edited the 1660 edition (from which this edition is taken) of Theatrum Sympatheticum. Papin born at Blois practiced medicine there and Alencon, and his death occurred subsequent to 1653. This dissertation was first published at Paris in 1644. Mohyus came from Rondchamp near Liege. He studied medicine and practiced it with credit from1620 to 1654. The Pulvis was first published in 1654. (Information from Heritage Auctions, 2015) Rubin 68. Bruning 2077. Ferchl 531. Ferguson II,440. Caillet 10599. Duveen 574. Rosenthal, Magica, 3265. ‎DISSERTATION. ESSAYS.‎

‎A Dissertation on False Religion: Also Essays and Letters on Various Subjects. A New Edition, With Alterations and large Additions; Particularly an Appendix to the Dissertation on False Religion, containing Answers to some Objects which have been made against it. Likewise an Index to the Whole.‎

‎8vo, 200 x 124 mms., pp. [vii], viii - xiii [xiv blank, xv Errata, xvi blank], 377 [378 blank, 379 - 415 Index, 416 blank], contemporary calf; corners a little worn, front joint very slightly rubbed, but generally a very good copy. This edition is in fact considerably expanded from the first edition of 1739. For the 1739 edition ESTC T96099 claims that it was "reprinted in 1757 with the addition of an essay on false religion." In fact, the essay on false religion appears on pages 216 - 291 in the 1739 edition, but the two texts differ greatly. Several essays appear in this 1757 edition that did not appear in the 1739, e. g., the cumbersomely-titled "To The Most Noble, the Right Honourable, the Honourable Nobility and Gentry Associated for the Preservation of the Game"; dated 5 April 1756, it claims "That we are in the utmost danger of losing our country [to the French] is apparent to all men who are not bereaved of every grain of understanding." Similar overstatements suggest that the author has his tongue firmly fixed in his cheek. ESTC T104023 locates copies in BL; Bates College, Florida State University, Fordham University. A "Third Edition" was published in 1761, ESTC N16898, with copies in Emory, Illinois, and Yale, and it appears to be a straightforward reprint of this edition of 1757. - First Edition London: Printed for T. ‎DIVINE OF THE CHURCH OF ENGLAND‎

‎A Lady's Religion In a Letter To the honourable My Lady Howard. By a Divine in the Church of England. With a Prefatory Epistle to the same Lady, By a Lay-Gentleman.‎

‎FIRST EDITION. Small 12mo, 128 x 69 mms., pp. [xxiv], 71 [72 blank], contemporary calf, panelled in gilt, spine gilt in compartments; joints repaired. A very good to fine copy. With several ownership inscriptions on the front end-papers: "Mary Bowsher/ Jany ye. 29th/ 1789 the gift of miss [?Flagraal]. Emison Bowsher/ the gift of his aunt/ Oct. 1838" on the recto of the front free end-paper, and "Mary Powell/ the gift of her/ Mother/ March 14 1869" on the front paste-down end-paper; and "Mary Bowsher" on the recto of the rear free end-paper, with various scribblings in pencil on the rear end-papers. The "Lay-Gentleman" signs himself "Adeisidmon," which was the title of a book published in 1709, Adeisidmon, sive Titus Livius a superstitione vindicatus ... Autore J. Tolando. Annex sunt ejusdem Origines Judaic. It is just possible that Toland is the "Lay-Gentleman" and re-used "Adeisdaemon" twelve years later. Given Toland's literary and religious propensities, he could even have authored the work himself and then have written the preface; or that he knew this work and borrowed the pseudonym` of the author of the preface. In any case, the "Lay-Gentleman" has an agenda that Toland probably would have had some sympathy for, stating that the author "has shewn Religion to be plain, short, and intelligible.... And that the knowledge of it depends not upon the helps of Spurious Learning, he has with a deal of genuine Learning. What ought to recommend him most, is, that although he be a Divine, yet he pretends not to make any thing pass upon you by vertue of the bare Authority of his Profession...." ESTC R212982 locates copies at BL (2), Bodleian, Cambridge, Lambeth Palace; and Minnesota. The work was reprinted in 1704, 1748 (Foulis Press), 1748 (London: Owen), 1751, and 1753. All copies except the 1748 Owen imprint, which adds other material, are uncommon. For Adeisidmon, see Robert Sullivan: John Toland and the Deist Controversy (1982) - First Edition London: Printed for Tho: Warren for Richard Baldwin..., 1697.‎

‎DOBSON (Susanna):‎

‎The Life of Petrarch. Collected from Memoires pour la Vie de Petrarch.‎

‎2 volumes. 8vo, pp. 544 [545 - 555 Index, 556 blank]; [II], 556 [557 - 567 Index, 568 blank, engraved frontispiece in volume 1, attractively rebound in quarter calf, marbled boards, vellum corners, morocco labels; top of title-page volume one slightly defective, ex-library, with several library stamps, including one on title-page of volume 1. Susanna Dobson (d. 1795) was the wife of Matthew Dobson, author of several medical treatises. Mrs. Dobson's first book was her Life of Petrarch, first published in 1775, which derived in part from de Sade's Mmoires pour la vie de Petrarch. The work proved to be very popular and had reached a sixth edition by 1805. Dr. Johnson noted it more-or-less favourably, saying that it "epitomized a very bulky French Life of Petrarch." Mrs. Dobson published other works and translations but could not make inroads into literary circles: Mr. Thrale said of her, in 1784, that she "is jealous of me with her Husband.... I care not.. if She & her Husband were tyed together, & thrown into the Sea." Fanny Burney had rather strong words, describing her as "coarse, low-bred, forward, self-sufficient, and flauting"; Burney's assessment was only slightly attenuated by her further observation that Mrs. Dobson had "a strong and masculine understanding, and parts that, had they been united with modesty, or fostered by education, might have made her a shining and agreeable woman." - London: Printed for James Buckland..., 1775.‎
