Le Lettere, che compongono la prima parte di questo volume, coprono l'intero arco della vita di Joyce - dalla paralisi di Dublino alla fuga in Italia con Nora, dall'esilio volontario a Trieste e Roma alla maturità trascorsa tra Parigi e Zurigo, dalla lotta intransigente con l'editore Grant Richards per la soffertissima pubblicazione di "Gente di Dublino" al riconoscimento internazionale grazie all'impegno di Ezra Pound - e si presentano come sua ideale autobiografia; al contrario, i "Saggi" - che si tratti di un vibrante pezzo sul provincialismo nazionalista irlandese, di una stroncatura degli ultimi romanzi pubblicati al di là o al di qua della Manica, del testo di una conferenza su William Blake o di un frammento sulla "Poetica" di Aristotele - ci consentono di incontrare il Joyce giornalista, il Joyce politico, il Joyce critico letterario: in una parola, il Joyce pubblico. Curata da Enrico Terrinoni, "Lettere e saggi" è un'opera monumentale, che consente una prospettiva assolutamente inedita sulla vicenda umana e intellettuale di James Joyce: non solo, infatti, queste scritture custodiscono al proprio interno i semi da cui scaturiranno i grandi capolavori in prosa - autentico spartiacque nella storia della letteratura -, ma al tempo stesso introducono il lettore al laboratorio in cui Joyce, da vero artigiano della parola, non smise mai di dare forma alla materia prima della sua arte: la sua vita intima di uomo; la vita dell'Omero del Novecento, un autore la cui grandezza né la moda né il logorio del tempo potranno mai scalfire.
