Introducendo, a metà degli anni Trenta, alcune carte pirandelliane inedite, Alvaro fa entrare il lettore nell'officina del grande scrittore siciliano: «[...] forse da una diecina d'anni, ha smesso di scrivere a mano, anche nei suoi appunti; scrive a macchina, con un dito, strappando e ricominciando il foglio a ogni cancellatura per vederselo nitido davanti. Così è composta la sua opera recente». Così, si potrebbe aggiungere, nascono le sue ultime novelle. Ne fa fede il materiale d'archivio che in questo volume si presenta in gran parte per la prima volta: un cospicuo gruppo di dattiloscritti con correzioni autografe che permette di ricostruire, nella sua ricchezza di varianti, una fase redazionale anteriore alle stampe. Su questa base documentaria si offre un ampio risarcimento filologico, ma anche ermeneutico, a testi ingiustamente rimasti indietro rispetto alla fama del romanziere e soprattutto del drammaturgo. Anche il trionfo del caso, che qui riguarda da vicino la novella come genere ed in particolare la narrativa breve dell'ultimo Pirandello, si mostra capace di innescare un rapporto di feconda sinergia tra filologia e critica.
