(WELLING, JAMES). WELLING, JAMES, SYLVIA LAVIN & NOAM M. ELCOTT
JAMES WELLING: GLASS HOUSE - SIGNED BY THE PHOTOGRAPHER
Bologna, ITALY, Damiani Editore., 2010, First Edition. (ISBN: 88-6208-161-8) Pictorial Boards, Oblong 4to, 96pp, 45 color illustrations. Text in English. Designed by Lorraine Wild and Victor Hu: Green Dragon Office. "From 2006 to 2009, James Welling photographed the Glass House, the landmark architectural estate that Philip Johnson built in New Canaan, Connecticut in 1949. Welling's photos offer a decided departure from the familiar views of the house and grounds. Using digital cameras set on a tripod and holding a variety of filters in front of the lens, he created tinted veils and distortions that transformed the image at the moment of exposure, endowing it with powerful swells of glowing color. As Welling described it, the use of filters enabled his project to become "a laboratory for ideas about transparency, reflectivity and color". This lovely hardbound monograph also includes an essay by Noam M. Elcott as well as a transcribed interview between the photographer and noted architectural historian Sylvia Lavin about the project. A most handsome example of the 2010 Damiani first edition additionally SIGNED "James Welling" in black ink on the rear colophon.. Near Fine/No Jacket - As Issued.

19th Century Student of Medicine
Journal of Manuscript Medical Notes in German, titled: "Materia Medica und Formulare nach Dr. Büchner" , [Medical Material and Formulas According to Dr. Büchner].
Manuscript notes made by a nineteenth century student of medicine, possibly intent on becoming an apothecary, who examines and records the earlier works of German physician and professor Andreas Elias Buechner (1701-1769), including numerous medicinal recipes and commentary on physiological effects. 8vo. 56 pages in manuscript. Text is in German. Marbled paper boards with blank label to front. Volume measures approximately 17 x 21 cm. Very slight wear to boards, otherwise in very good condition, internally crisp and bright. The 18th century was the 'Golden Age' of scientific academies and learned societies. This work provides valuable information on the historic application of natural ingredients with medicinal qualities, as well as a somewhat early history of the experimentation and progress in the field of medicine, by drawing from the methodology and recipes of a notable eighteenth century German physician and educator in the field - Andreas Elias Büchner. Following a five-point outline, the writer compiles a lengthy and well organized list of medical ailments or discomforts and the simple remedies for them, over 24 pages, a very small sampling of these being parageusia (a distortion of the sense of taste), digestive issues for which are listed various laxatives, skin sensitivities and emollients, "alterantia" or hormonal alterants, and diaphoretics. A section headed "Special Formulas," comprising 23 pages of more complex medicinal recipes, provides ingredients and measurements for various emulsions, syrups, pills and much more. Andreas Elias Büchner (1701-1769) was a German physician, naturalist, Professor of Medicine at some of Germany's leading institutions, president of the German National Academy of Sciences Leopoldina from 1735 to 1769, and one of Friedrich Hoffmann's most zealous followers. [KEROUAC] WILLIAM MALLIOL
A Sense of Dark (Inscribed by Kerouac)
New York, Atheneum, 1968. First Edition. Inscribed by Jack Kerouac for his brother in law, John Sampas: "Happy Birthday to my Brother-in-law John | Jack Kerouac." With a signed letter of provenance from Jeffrey Weinberg (bookseller), dated 1983, where he states that this copy of A Sense of Dark was given to Kerouac by the publisher's agent for a possible review. John, brother to Stella, Kerouac's third wife, became the executor of the Kerouac estate after Stella and Jan's deaths in the 90s. An interesting association copy. Book presents just about Fine overall in a Very Good+ dust jacket with some wear at chipping at the spine ends and slight bend at the top of the front panel. William McIenly writing under the pseudonym of William Malliol used his writing as an outlet for his pain and PTSD, after his war experiences in Korea. "By his estimates he had killed more than 100 enemy soldiers..with a samurai sword..it was the love of a young woman and four years at Oxford University that changed William and helped him see the futility of his violence" (Zerega). A Sense of Dark graphically and honestly sets out the experiences of a soldier not so unlike Malliol himself. Such a book would have added fuel to Kerouac's own anti-war sentiments, as the Vietnam War continued into its second decade. Fine in Very Good + dust jacket. . Fine in Very Good + dust jacket. Original prospectus piece for a limited edition work on ancient Egypt, rare and unique Swiss ephemera. Quarto. 4 pages illustrated colour prospectus on fine untrimmed laid paper, featuring detailed commentary by the editors dated February 1915, and a colour lithographed insert to illustrate photographed samples of ancient Egyptian weaving (plate VI in the book).
