br. "Donne innamorate", romanzo di Lawrence del 1920, riflette ampiamente il clima bellico in cui venne scritto. È il periodo in cui l'autore soffre la miseria e la censura ufficiale, dal momento che sua moglie era sospettata di essere una spia tedesca mentre la sua reputazione come scrittore, accusato di essere un sovvertitore letterario, non lo aiutava di certo. L'opera inizialmente viene concepita come continuazione del precedente romanzo "L'arcobaleno". Entrambi in effetti riflettono uno spaccato delle vicende di una famiglia di agricoltori inglesi, i Brangwen, e la loro evoluzione che si concretizza in atteggiamenti sempre più liberi verso il sesso e il matrimonio.

Nasce tra i due una passione e quando Connie si accorge di aspettare un bambino, lascia il marito e va a vivere insieme a Mellors. Per il verismo tattile con il quale racconta l'amore sessuale, per la critica aperta alle convenzioni sociali, per l'apparente esaltazione dell'adulterio, l'opera più famosa di Lawrence (colpita da sentenze di oscenità e volgarità) uscì "purgata" nel 1928, in Inghilterra; sarà pubblicata in edizione integrale solo nel 1960.
