Il secondo romanzo, invece, "Pian della Tortilla" (1935), gli fa ottenere il primo premio letterario, la medaglia d’oro per il miglior romanzo scritto da un californiano, assegnata dal Commonwealth Club of California. E con questa storia umoristica raggiunge la notorietà. A breve giro pubblica "La battaglia" (1936) e "Uomini e topi" (1937). Segue quello che viene considerato il suo miglior lavoro, "Furore" (1939). Nel 1940, quando il romanzo viene adattato per lo schermo, riceve il premio Pulitzer. Altri romanzi arriveranno, come il grande "La valle dell’Eden" (1952).
