‎And it is wonderful that even Today. Book Mark: Books Make the Perfect Gift Visit Your Local Bookseller‎

‎New York: Viking 1952. First Edition Presumed. Single Sheet. Very Good-. 12mo - over 6" - 7" tall. Unrecorded and presumably rare piece of Steinback ephemera which we date to 1951/1952 located in a first edition of "East of Eden" 1952 and printing a Steinbeck text excerpted from his "Some Random and Randy Thoughts on Books" which appeared the prior year in "The Author Looks at Format" American Institute of Graphic Arts 1951. The first side reads: "And it is wonderful that even today with all competition of records of radio of television of motion pictures the book has kept its precious character. A book is somehow sacred. A dictator can kill and maim people can sink to any kind of tyranny and only be hated but when books are burned the ultimate in tyranny has happened. This we cannot forgive. People. automatically believe in books This is strange but it is so. Messages come from behind the controlled and censored areas of the world and they do not ask for radios for papers and pamphlets. They invariably ask for books. They believe books when they believe nothing else. - John Steinbeck" The second reads: "Book Mark decorative rule Books Make the Perfect Gift Visit Your Local Bookseller" decorative rule. ‎Archive of One Hundred and Fifty Original Production and Publicity Still Photographs for: OF MICE AND MEN‎

‎Los Angeles: United Artists 1939. One hundred and fifty 7.5 x 9.5 inch a few smaller borderless black & white stills. Generally very good to near fine a few corner creases one or two with signs of oxidation. An unusually comprehensive archive with trivial duplication of the production and publicity stills for the 1939 film adaptation of Steinbeck's novel directed by Lewis Milestone starring Burgess Meredith Lon Chaney Jr. et al. The still photographer for the film has generally been identified as Tom Evans. The collection offers unusually strong representation of the X P and H sequences in many instances representing contiguous runs of images within the negative sequences. A considerable number of the stills bear the studio's mimeographed cut-lines affixed to the back and a few bear rubber-stamped designations as "proof" prints. It would be difficult indeed to recreate such a near comprehensive collection of the stills associated with this film. United Artists unknown‎

‎STEINBECK JOHN‎

‎Autograph Letter Signed from John Steinbeck to Writer Daniel James‎

‎Los Gatos California: 1 page quarto 8 1/2 by 14 inches early 1941. Original excellent content letter signed “John†written in blue ink on yellow lined foolscap paper. Steinbeck writes to Daniel James who had just finished his work as one of the assistant directors to Charles Chaplin on his film classic The Great Dictator. Steinbeck has just returned home from being in Hollywood as well where he was working on his Mexican documentary film The Forgotten Village. “.I just got back from your part of the country to find your letter. Didn’t see anyone down there. Went from the lab to my apartment back and forth and came home the moment I was finished. I didn’t have anything to do with picking a composer. Hans Eisler wrote the music after Sillvestre Revueltas died. I haven’t even heard it. I think the film is pretty good but of course can’t tell until it is all finished and music and words set on the film. This is a crazy time and I feel pretty much the same. Too much rather than too little information. And it doesn’t seem to mirror the total of our knowledge a bit. Are you still working for Charley Chaplin He has been away a long time now. And I have heard one group say The Great Dictator is a failure and another that it is a great success. Which do you think is true. I’m going to work now on the Gulf book Sea of Cortez. Hope to have it ready by summer. It is going to be very hard work but of a kind I like and trust particularly now precise work in which the information does not pass through any censorship bureau.Haven’t been to Monterey for quite a while but Carol Steinbeck has. Tal is going to have a baby Francis and Elaine are reported well and Ed Ricketts is Ed.†Fine condition. 1 page, quarto, 8 1/2 by 14 inches unknown‎

‎STEINBECK John ZANUCK Daryl‎

‎Autograph letter signed. With Viva Zapata Screenplay‎

‎1949. First Edition . Signed. ZANUCK Daryl STEINBECK John. Autograph letter signed. Pacific Grove California: November 4 1949. WITH: Viva Zapata! Screenplay. WITH: John Steinbeck and Twentieth Century-Fox Film Corporation Legal Department. New York: Twentieth Century-Fox Film 1949 1951. Three items. Single original leaf 8-1/2 by 11 inches of onionskin letterhead in manuscript on the recto. WITH: Quarto 8-1/2 by 11 inches mimeograph manuscript in typescript on rectos only original printed yellow wrappers bound with brads as issued. WITH: Ten leaves of facsimile 8-1/2 by 11 inches loose. Together housed in a custom folding chemise and slipcase. $8000.November 4 1949 autograph letter signed by Steinbeck to film producer Daryl Zanuck reporting Steinbecks optimism at the progress of his original screenplay for the film Viva Zapata! Steinbecks letter in this rare collection with a May 16 1951 original final shooting screenplay for the film which premiered in 1952 starring Marlon Brando and directed by Elia Kazan with Steinbecks Oscar-nominated script hailed as a towering achievement unquestionably his finest work in the genre housed together with ten loose leaves of facsimile documenting Steinbecks legal contracts on the film with Twentieth Century-Fox Film in a handsome custom folding chemise and half morocco slipcase.""Steinbeck's towering achievement in film is most embodied by Viva Zapata! a film Robert Morseberger regards as 'unquestionably his finest work in the genre When Viva Zapata! finally appeared on the screen in 1952 it was the culmination not only of 20 years of study but also Steinbeck's apprenticeship in writing for HollywoodUnlike F. Scott Fitzgerald William Faulkner or Ernest Hemingway Steinbeck had great successes on the big screen Over the course of his career Steinbeck was three times nominated for the screenwriting Academy Award while his films more generally garnered 25 Academy Award nominations ultimately winning four On the film's release with Marlon Brando in the lead Viva Zapata! electrified audiences. It earned Steinbeck an Academy Award nomination for best story and screenplay; Marlon Brando earned an Oscar nomination for best actor while Anthony Quinn actually won the Oscar for best supporting actor. Indeed Morseberger ranks Viva Zapata! as one of the four 'most memorable films placing it in the elite company of High Noon Singin' in the Rain and The Quiet Man"" Price ""Champion of the Common Man"" in Bloom John Steinbeck 47-48. The very scarce autograph letter in this collection entirely in Steinbeck's hand is dated three years before the film's 1952 premiere and many years after he began work on the screenplay. The letterincluded with the ""shooting final"" screenplay of Viva Zapata! in the original wrappers of Twentieth Century-Fox Film Corporationcaptures his near elation at this turning point in the project that consumed so many years of his life. Steinbeck who ""had been reading about Emiliano Zapata since the early 1930s"" here writes Fox producer Daryl Zanuck with evident relief about his screenplay Railsback and Meyer 411. The letter is on a single leaf of onionskin personal letterhead with his Pacific Grove address: ""John Steinbeck 147 Eleventh Street Pacific Grove California."" It reads: ""November 4 49 Dear Daryl: It was a brilliant thing to send me Jules Buck. He is a hell of a man. We work well together are going very fast and I think a good script is coming out of it. I am extremely pleased. Just a note John Steinbeck."" Together with Steinbeck's letter and the screenplay are ten loose facsimile leaves the file copies of legal agreements between Steinbeck and Twentieth Century-Fox Film Corporation including a four-page ""Modification Agreement"" dated ""November 23 1949"" and a six-page ""Assignment"" with the date of ""February 5 1951."" ""The idea for a screenplay on the life of the Mexican revolutionary Emiliano Zapata came to Steinbeck in the midst of writing the shooting script of The Pearl."" He went to Mexico in June 1948 to begin research on the figure he revered as ""'one of the greatest men who ever lived Steinbeck continued to return to Mexico for short periods especially between July and November 1948 and later in January 1949. He prided himself with interviewing every eyewitness he could find"" Railsback &amp; Meyer 4110. Despite a journalistic diligence that surpassed the reportage behind his novel The Grapes of Wrath 1939 Steinbeck struggled with the screenplay and ""the more false starts he made the more frightened he became."" On returning to Mexico in 1949 he optimistically ""reported 'I think this script must be excellent He had the old excitement again and he was 'writing like a fiend."" Yet that same fall he was back ""in Pacific Grove still struggling with Zapata Nearly all his writing time over the past few years had been spent on Zapata"" Benson 626 630 650. The film did not become a reality until Steinbeck's friend director Elia Kazan ""obtained a development deal with producer Daryl Zanuck At Zanuck's request Steinbeck sent what material he had and then Zanuck handed it over to his assistant producer and scenarist Jules Buck who was taken aback when he was given a stack of paper some three or four inches thick. 'It was' Buck remembers 'a very definitive breakdown of the revolution the causes it was magnificent and of Zapata the history. A master's degree is what he had together with a Ph.D. Except it wasn't a screenplay Zanuck asked Buck if he could get a script out of Steinbeck in about four weeks John who had been 'in hiding' somewhere in Hollywood and Jules met and liked each other immediately."" Soon Jules traveled to Pacific Grove and settled in as the two began to work through the material. In a later interview Buck recalled one morning when he said ""'Okay John today's the day.' I typed 'Zapata' and then I said 'Give me the words' and by God he gave me the words Jules sat at John's battered old IBM typewriter while John alternately sat paced the room or returned to a corner to think and work something out He and Jules worked well together and their progress was very rapid In fact they finished a first draft in eleven days"" Benson 653-4. The result was ""a draft both Zanuck and Kazan thought could be shaped into a shooting script. It was this manuscript that Kazan Steinbeck and Zanuck discussed at length during a long weekend at Zanuck's Palm Springs home in spring 1950 Kazan and Steinbeck returned to New York where they put in an intense two months on the script Kazan sitting at the typewriter asking Steinbeck for new or revised dialogue"" Schickel Elia Kazan 237-8. Viva Zapata! premiered in early February 1952. Critics continue to praise Viva Zapata! as ""the best film produced from a screenplay by John Steinbeck"" Railsback &amp; Meyer 414.Also included here is the first English edition published the same year as the American first of Zapata: The Little Tiger 1991 which includes the previously unpublished introduction commentary and script for the film Viva Zapata! the screenplay was published in 1975 but the important introduction and commentary render this a new edition. Screenplay containing several blue revision leaves with heading ""Revised'Viva Zapata!'6/2/51""; front wrapper with inkstamp at lower right corner ""Received New York Legal Dept. Feb 5""; number ""71 at lower right corner ""255"" at upper left corner. Date of ""May 16 1951 on front wrapper and on initial leaf with intact coupon ""Received from Stenographic Dept"" and on title page. Letter with small penciled letter in an unidentified hand; two small file holes at upper margin not affecting text. Screenplay with ""Env. 1762"" and ""2480.27"" in unidentified hand on upper right corner of front wrapper. Small penciled initials to rear blank. An exceptional collection in fine condition. unknown‎

I haven't heard from you in a very long time. The Byrens trial is going to happen in January. I will go down to appear. I have never known whether you are in the same action or a separate one. "I am working on Zapata script now and I think it might even be good. I painted my little house inside and out and made repairs and now am ready to fix my garden. I've forgotten Milly's i.e. LEWIS MILESTONE'S street number too but at least I remember his street. We don't live at the hotel but we get our mail there. I know Paulette knows the place. We have a little house with a big garden about half a mile from the plaza - very pleasant. Will be here until October I guess. We don't start shooting THE PEARL until August. I don't suppose there is much chance of your coming down after you finish the Chambermaid Meredith's DIARY OF A CHAMBERMAID. Blumey was asking about you the other night when we were in town. We're getting lots of sun and oddly enough a lot of work done a thing I can hardly believe. I wonder how your film "Diary of A Chambermaid" goes. I have some ideas for the future - too many but perhaps worth discussing some time. Tom grows like a bloody weed. He is so black we will have trouble getting him into a hotel in Georgia. And he is very strong and no intellectual company whatever. Gwyn thrives here. Anyway we'll see our picture through here and then go on to New York in October and after that we have no plans. . The grapevine has nice things to say about your picture. And Renoir is a great man. I've always wanted to work with him. The rains are just starting here and the fine big clouds all day. ‎Bombs Away: The Story of a Bomber Team.‎

‎New York: The Viking Press 1942. First edition of Steinbeck's riveting account of his experiences with several bomber crews of the U.S. Army Air Forces during WWII. Octavo original cloth illustrated with 60 photographs by John Swope. Association copy inscribed by the author on the front free endpaper "Dear Mr. Wilson Many thanks for your lucid thoughts and interest in my work John Steinbeck." The recipient Edmund Wilson was an American literary critic and progenitor of the Library of America publication series. His critical works helped foster public appreciation for many of the foremost American writers of the 20th century including F. Scott Fitzgerald Ernest Hemingway John Dos Passos and William Faulkner. Steinbeck's inscription refers in jest to Wilson's harsh critique of his work in his 1941 publication The Boys in the Back Room: Notes on California Novelists. Near fine in the rare original dust jacket which is in very good condition. An exceptional association linking these two great American men of letters. Steinbeck was commissioned to write the present volume by the United States Army Forces as part of an effort to increase Air Force recruitment and morale. In order to write the book Steinbeck traveled more than 20000 miles in 30 days visiting dozens of training corps and flying fields with John Swopes himself a flier who took the 60 photographs that illustrate the book documenting the various jobs needed to form a bombing team. All royalties of the author and photographer as well as publishing profits were endowed to the perpetual Air Forces Aid Society Trust Fund to provide emergency aid for the families of fliers lost in the line of duty. ‎STEINBECK John 1902 1968‎

‎Bombs Away: The Story of a Bomber Team‎

‎New York: The Viking Press 1941. 8vo. 185 pp. 60 black-and-white photographs by John Swope. Original decorated cloth. A very good copy without the jacket. FIRST EDITION. A wonderful association copy warmly inscribed by 8 of the 10 members of the first crew of the B-24 Liberator Bomber "Billie B" to the woman for whom the plane was named by its first pilot 1st Lt. Joseph Robins Littlepage. Nearly full-page inscriptions by the pilot navigator and co-pilot in blue ink on the front pastedown and the front free endpaper as well as by the crew engineer assistant crew engineer radioman assistant radioman and one of the gunners in blue ink on the rear free endpapers. The pilot's inscription reads "To Billie - / From the skipper to her namesake. There isn't much I could tell you other than we are just another combat crew tryin to bring our standards up to the finest ship ever built 42-40076 the Billie "B" / JR Littlepage / First Pilot" The navigator's inscription reads "May 16 1943 / Hi Billie - / Tho I haven't had the pleasure of meeting you I feel that I already know you. However I still have hopes of meeting you in the near future. In the meantime I'll keep doing my darndest to navigate your name sake safely to her targets and back again. / Best wishes from the navigator / James H. Scholl / Gonzales Texas" The co-pilot's inscription reads "Hello Billie - / We are all waiting for the day that we can introduce you to the "Billie B." However from the way Joe talks it won't be a fair comparison. We will all be seeing you. / Until then - George L. Goddard / co-pilot". The inscription by S/Sgt. Harold A. Denison Asst Crew Engineer is a charming 4-line attempt at poetry. The other inscriptions are by S/Sgt. Thomas R. Brady Jr. Gunner T/Sgt. Cyril B. Cluff Jr. Radioman/Gunner and S/Sgt. Clifford H. Muhlhausen Asst. Radioman. Below that of S/Sgt. Harold Hutton Justus Crew Engineer is this moving addition by the pilot "Note - / I'd rather fly without one of the engines than leave him on the ground loyal to the crew faithful at his work and loves the ship as I do -- the Air Corps has none as good - the country none better - / J.R.L." In addition the pilot has annotated 49 of the 60 B&W photos the accompany Steinbeck's journalistic account of the training of a typical flight crew. The notes are often amusing: the captions of pictures of a B-17 and a B-24 on facing pages were modified to read "Boeing B-17E commonly known as the Flying Fortress Junk Heaps" and "Consolidated B-24 commonly known as the Liberator Billie 'B'"; in many cases they are merely informative aimed at telling her name sake about crew activities and features of the plane; and sometimes touching beneath the chapter opening photograph of a pilot 1st Lt. Littlepage has added "And don't think he's not scared". The only members not represented are 1st Lt. Leonard Barton Conway Bombadier and S/Sgt. William Posledni Gunner. The newly commissioned B-24 Liberator Bomber "Billie B" 42-40076 was assigned to the 13th Air Force 307th Bombardment Group "The Long Rangers" 370th Bomber Squadron and was first stationed at Carney Field Guadalcanal on May 29 1943 with this crew flying missions until July 3 when the plane was grounded for repairs. On July 6 the 10-man crew was assigned to another plane for a bombing mission to Bougainville Island and the plane and crew was lost at sea on its way back from the Philippines. The "Billie B" was assigned to a replacement crew and went on to serve valiantly in the South Pacific until the end of August 1944.. <br/><br/> The Viking Press hardcover‎
