The story tells of the military occupation of a small town in Northern Europe by the army of an unnamed nation at war with England and Russia much like the occupation of Norway by the Germans during World War II. Numerous editions were secretly published across all of occupied Europe including Norwegian Swedish Danish Dutch and Italian versions; it was the best known work of U.S. literature in the Soviet Union during the war. This is a tale of an invading army's occupation of a small town in Northern Europe -- written with an adaptation for the theatre in mind at the request of the OSS with the aim of motivating resistance movements across Europe. The country occupied is not named but for this book Steinbeck received from the King of Norway the King Haakon VII Freedom Cross; the book was quickly translated and published in many countries including an illegal edition by the French Resistance. This is a standard Viking Press copy with no mention of other presses on the copyright page and with the extra period on page 112. It lacks the First Published statement on the copyright page drawing attention to the Canadian publishing lines which appear in all copies. This copy bears the Kingsport Press slug at the base of the copyright page. 188 pages. Not in Goldstone and Payne or the Morrow catalogue. A short novel about the military occupation of a small town a contemporary fable inspired by the Nazi invasion of Norway. The book was widely reprinted throughout Europe during the Second World War even in clandestine editions in Nazi-occupied territory. First Canadian edition first printing An attractive copy in blue cloth with light wear to the corners. This copy is similar to that in the Holmes Steinbeck bibliographical catalogue A17h except that the dust jacket is wove rather than smooth paper.
