January 2010A story based on a Mexican folk tale The Pearl explores the secrets of man's nature the darkest depths of evil and the disastrous effects of stepping out of an established system for bad things will happen if one abuses his/her spot according to the novel. The Pearl has a strong moral that people should be content with one's life as demonstrated in the book when many unfortunate events happen to Kino his wife Juana and their baby boy Coyotito after the discovery of the pearl later in the book. The novella presents this view through the character of the privileged town�s people among them the pearl traders who participate in continuing the oppression of the indigenous people Kino's race by offering Kino an unfair price for his pearl. The book also describes the messages of oppression and racism in a way that shows they are negative elements in life and it shows this when the doctor refers to Kino's race as animals. The Pearl itself something that can be held in the palm of the hand eventually leads to the destruction of a well-respected family. At the outset Kino envisions a better future the pearl will bring as he wants new clothes for his family and himself a proper wedding for him and Juana and a proper education for Coyotito. This is either the first or the second Canadian edition of The Pearl. Goldstone and Payne listed a 1947 Canadian edition as their A25c but no copy was ever located. The Morrow catalog of the Valentine collection identified this school edition as the second Canadian edition also never having found a book to match G&P A25c. The Holmes catalog makes the obvious leap that this is actually the first Canadian edition their A25g. What neither Morrow or the Holmeses realized is that the book went through at least two and perhaps more printings identified by codes on the final text page. A near fine copy with a slightly tanned spine. Code T.H.B. 46 on final text page. With a second copy very good with markings on the notes pages; code T.H.B. 06 on final text page. With a review slip tipped onto the front free endpaper. Review slip with 6-61 code suggesting a 1961 printing. MacMillan Company of Canada hardcover
