Het gaat om zogenaamd vertrouwelijke brieven van beroemde figuren uit de geschiedenis: van Cleopatra tot Maria Magdalena, van Michiel de Ruyter tot Amalia van Solms. Zij proberen op dramatische momenten in hun leven een verre geliefde of intimus te overtuigen. In werkelijkheid komen die ontboezemingen echter niet van de afzenders. De heldinnenbrief is de travestie ten top. Achter veelal vrouwelijke personages gaan meestal mannelijke dichters schuil. Ze dragen bij aan een literair spel door telkens op Ovidius en op elkaar te varieren. Zo ontstaan er complete fictieve correspondenties. Maar het verzinsel zit nu eenmaal ingebakken in het genre, waaraan ook Vondel en Hooft zich hebben gewaagd. Wat de 'rievenschrijvers'met veel stilistische bravoure proberen te bereiken, is bij voorbaat vergeefs -de droeve afloop van hun leven als koningin, prinses of staatsvrouw is bekend.‎

The verse emphasized the mutual benefit of an alliance: if Henry supported him the Pope would acknowledge disputed Tudor claims to England's throne. For Henry, the gift represented a literary and political coup. With all the rhetorical skill of a learned poet, Nagonius presented the King as a classical hero on an epic scale in the latest Italian style. The work thus acknowledged Henry's international significance. Other recipients of Nagonius's panegyric verse include Holy Roman Emperor Maximilian I, Vladislav II of Bohemia, Louis XII of France, Doge Leonardo Loredan, the condottieri Niccolo Orsini and Gian Giacomo Trivulzio, Giovanni Bentivoglio, lord of Bologna, and Duke Ercole d'Este of Ferrara. Peter Lombard's major work, the four books of the Sentences, was written in the mid twelfth century, and as early as the 1160s, the text was glossed and commented on in the schools. There is hardly a theologian of note throughout the rest of the Middle Ages who did not write a commentary on the Sentences. Yet in spite of its importance in Western intellectual history and its capacity to excite many generations of students and teachers, the Sentences has received little attention in more recent times. Indeed, it has been called 'one of the least read of the world's great books'. This volume makes available for the first time in English a full translation of Book 1 of the Sentences. It consists of forty-eight Distinctions, the bulk of which deal with God in his transcendence and with the mystery of the Trinity. The person of God the Father is the topic in Distinction iv, that of God the Son in v-ix, that of God the Holy Spirit in x-xviii. Distinctions xix-xxxiv are deeply concerned with the language that can be used in describing the Trinity and the relations among the divine persons. The remaining distinctions deal with the divine attributes as they become manifest in God's action towards creatures. An important concern is the preservation of God's sovereign freedom and the avoidance of any confusion regarding the absolute transcendence of God, despite his graceful self-disclosure in creation and revelation. This work by Jeremias Held (Henry Green, no. 74) is the second German translation of the emblems of Andrea Alciato, who is rightfully known as pater et princeps of the emblem. The first German translation was written by Wolfgang Hunger and published by Chrestien Wechel in a bilingual Latin-German edition in Paris in 1542. Held's version, printed in 1566 and 1580, has never before been offered in its entirety in a modern reprint. It, too, is a bilingual edition with the Latin texts followed by Held's German version. Jeremias Held produced this, the second German translation, which appeared in a 1566 and a 1580 edition. The 1566 edition was printed in Frankfurt-am-Main by Georg Raben for Simon Huter and Sigmund Feyerabend. The colophon is dated 1567. Held's version contains 132 woodcuts in text to Alciato's 212 emblems, and they are numbered i-ccxvii. The numbering of the emblems has caused some confusion. Henry Green (190) hastily called the number 217 a misprint, but it is not. The number 217 is correct and derives from the separate numbering of the alternative versions of the epigrams, which Alciato had labled ?aliud,? to four of the emblems. Held's written German is simple and colloquial. In fact it is sloppy. In matters of orthography, we cannot know if the typesetting accurately represents his intentions, but it probably does. The birth and flowering of canonical jurisprudence in the twelfth century is one of the most striking and fruitful developments of the age, marking an important turn in the history of the Church and in framing the essential elements of the rule of law in political and social life. Raymond of Penyafort was an important participant in these developments. Born near Barcelona in 1175, he became a teacher of canon law at Bologna, the greatest centre of legal studies. He joined the newly founded Order of Preachers (Dominicans), and championed multilingual education of the friars for a more effective evangelization of Muslims and Jews. He became Master General of the Order in 1238, and died in 1275. He was canonized in 1601 and has been declared the patron saint of canon lawyers. Pope Gregory IX appointed Raymond to produce a comprehensive compilation of papal legal decisions. The result, the Decretals of Gregory IX (1234), would remain normative in the Catholic Church until 1917. Raymond drew on it to compose his Summa on Marriage, a summary of learned reflection on the law of marriage, to aid his Dominican brothers in hearing confessions, where numerous problems touching on marriage would have been encountered. The definition of marriage and of its ends, stages and impediments, arrangements and consequences are the subject of the work. This translation of it offers students and scholars alike a comprehensive presentation of the medieval teaching on marriage - learned in content, practical in orientation. Ces 7.500 vers presentent des citations tirees des poemes des troubadours. Or, ce tome de 1976 etant epuise, il etait evident qu'il fallait donner une deuxieme edition de cette partie du Breviari a cause de son interet aupres d'un public plus large de medievistes et d'amateurs eclaires. Cette re-edition entierement refondue a partir des manuscrits contient aussi la mise a jour de la bibliographie et des notes, et donne aussi la lettre de Matfre a sa soeur. Languages : French.‎

‎The Breviari d'Amor dates from 1288 (and was probably completed around 1292), is about 34,500 lines long and written in octosyllabic rhyming couplets. It exists in twelve full or almost full manuscripts and twelve fragments. It is written in Medieval Occitan and is the product in part of a long theological tradition and in part of the courtly tradition. This is the first edition to be published since the two-volume work of Gabriel Azais (1862-1881), which was of great merit for its time, but used only four of the manuscripts. The numbering of the present edition follows that of Azais, given the many works which allude to the Breviari. This didactic text has necessarily been labeled as "encyclopaedic" and this is certainly not a matter of dispute, although, in terms of the subject matter, it is very unusual since the emphasis is not only theological but also courtly. It conforms to the general perspective adopted by summae but the particular integration of the theological aspects with the debate on the nature of fin'amor makes it unique. Three volumes of text have been published, each with a selective glossary and bibliography, volume V (1976), which gives the final 7,000 odd lines with identification of the troubadour quotations (and a few others from the Old French trouvere tradition and from the non-lyric Occitan genres) and adds, in an Appendix, the letter of Matfre to his sister. This volume is now out of print, but a new edition, which adds a French translation, will be published very soon. The succeeding volumes respect the linear tradition of the Breviari, vol. II (1989), the first 8,800 lines, vol. III (1998), the next 8,000 approximately, published in the Publications de l'A.I.E.O. The present volume, vol. IV, completes the text and ends at line 27252, taking the reader up to the beginning of volume V, which itself ends at line 34597. It deals with the nature of sin and its manifestation according to the classes and professions of society, and then examines the fundamental Christian virtue of love of one's neighbour. The concept of the tree of life is treated along with the three theological virtues, the four cardinal virtues and the seven gifts of the Holy Spirit. The matter of faith is discussed and six of the articles of the Credo. The volume ends with a treatise on the lives of the apostles, Andrew, John the Baptist and Thomas. It is hoped that publication of volume VI, an exhaustive glossary (probably with a CD ROM of the text) will appear in the next three years, and, shortly after, volume I, the Introduction, to complete this huge enterprise. ‎Visitors to the Isle de Lerins, just off Cannes, can see not only the island but also what today is a Cistercian abbey founded about 410 A.D. by St. Honoratus (350-429), hermit, monk and bishop of Arles. Scarcely nothing has changed physically, and the wild unforgiving landscape of the place explains the nature of many of the events described in this verse text, especially the terrifying massacre of the community after the death of Honoratus, which contains horrifying details very rare in mediaeval narratives. Given the importance of this story, based on nine manuscripts, it is astonishing that a complete edition has not appeared before this date. The late Ingegard Suwe Ericsson, a Swedish scholar, had undertaken an edition of the first two books, approximately the first half of the work, for her doctorate, published in 1943, in a volume which is naturally difficult to find in libraries. Thereafter, she had hoped to create a complete edition, but, sadly, her profession as a teacher, the care she gave her husband and, in later years, her own ill-health prevented her from continuing the work. In 1988, she contacted Regina af Geijerstam, emeritus professor of Spanish, University of Stockholm, to ask if she would find an editor who would finish the work, for which Suwe Ericsson had a text of the last three books. In 1989, Peter Ricketts made the journey to Ostersund, where Suwe Ericsson was living, and he decided to undertake the work himself. She died in 1991. In 2000, Cyril Hershon offered his support to bring the whole project to fruition, and the edition will shortly be ready to go to press. Not only have Association Internationale d?Etudes Occitanes and Brepols given their approval for the publication of the second half of the work, dealing with the miracles performed by Honoratus after his death, but also for the addition of the work of Ingegard Suwe Ericsson, to give the mediaeval Occitan work in its entirety in one volume. Ingegard Suwe Ericsson?s 1943 edition has been respected, apart from the occasional correction to the text. Her introduction considers the manuscript tradition, the language of the scribe in a full linguistic analysis, with examples taken from the first 4127 lines, and only minor elements, such as a resume in French of this part and a list of errors found in the venerable edition by Sardou have been omitted. Thereafter, there is a complete integration of the first and second parts: the text, accompanied by footnotes, followed by notes to the text, a selective glossary, a table of proper names, and an updated bibliography. The whole is a text which repays reading and will fill a gap in the repertoire of important mediaeval texts. Languages : French, Occitan.‎

It incorporates dogmatic treatises and reflects several ancient cults devoted to the historical Buddha Sakyamuni as well as several Bodhisattvas. Of the three Chinese translations form the original Sanskrit text the one by Yi Jing (7th century) became the basis of further traditions. Fragments of a translation from this Chinese version into Old Turkish around the 10th century, were found by the numerous and famous Central Asian expeditions in Gansu as well as in the Turfan oasis. For the critical edition of the forewords and the first two chapters, all surviving manuscripts and blockprints (altogether two in Petersburg and about twenty in the Turfan Collection of the Berlin-Brandenburgische Akademie der Wissenschaften) have been collated. Parts missing in the Petersburg manuscripts are here edited for the first time. The edition is accompanied by a German translation as wellas a commentary on textual and Buddhological problems. Un cheminement biographique minutieux, serti d'anecdotes détaillées, qui est celui de la Recherche même. — "Painter ne disposait pas de sources nouvelles pour établir sa biographie ; mais il a écrit, « selon les méthodes de la critique universitaire », ne s'appuyant que sur des faits ou des témoignages avérés, un récit complet et très détaillé de la vie de Proust. Le moindre mérite de ces deux gros volumes n'est pas leur clarté, leur lisibilité.
