This book is primarily a catalogue of those nearly-intact extant books containing the full music of the Mass made between the date of the Bohemian Revolution (July 1419) and the Battle of the White Mountain (November 1620). Two principal religious factions were active in Bohemia and Moravia during the period. The larger, the Utraquists, took communion in both bread and wine. The Roman Catholics, fewer but still numerous, followed the then relatively recent practice of using bread only. While graduals are important sources for the liturgy practised by Utraquists and Roman Catholics, many of them are also of great interest artistically and historically. Some of the more beautiful books were produced for use by the literary societies, later incorporated as guilds, which were responsible for the music in their churches. The information the books contain about the membership of the guilds, containing as it did most of the social strata of the towns, gives important information about the contemporary social structure and about the strength of Utraquism. Individual guild members often sponsored a page at the beginning of a mass set which was profusely decorated. The quality of the art and the evolution in the iconography can be appreciated in the book's 50 colour plates. Languages : English.

Le lecteur est engage dans la decouverte passionnante d'une famille coherente de manuscrits, consideres d'abord dans leur materialite d'objets - le codex, ses folios de parchemin, le texte du scribe et les medaillons du peintre, les lignes et les couleurs - materialite a partir de laquelle se revele le sens du texte et des images. L'auteur produit ainsi une oeuvre scientifique d'essai par son intention hermeneutique et aussi par une demarche qui, a la maniere des Bibles Moralisees, lie de maniere indissociable le present et le passe. Les references a la philosophie et a la linguistique (Deleuze et Ricoeur par exemple), a la litterature (Proust, Le Clezio), a la peinture et sculpture (Mondrian, Brancusi) ne sont pas de simples ornements ?-elles nourrissent la pensee de l'auteur et eclairent des aspects essentiels des Bibles Moralisees, tel le caractere repetitif des medaillons et la geometrie matricielle de la page, ou encore l'articulation de la paraphrase biblique et de la ?« signification ?» ou ?« moralisation ?» qui lui repond en echo. L'enjeu de l'ouvrage est soutenu par un souci fondamental pour le debat methodologique; l'auteur vise a explorer, tenant compte du contexte historique avec une grande precision, des nouvelles voies de recherche apres le postmodernisme et le linguistic turn. The Dominican Thomas of Cantimpre (c. 1200-c. 1270) was a key figure in the 'evangelical awakening' of the thirteenth century. A prolific hagiographer, he lauded such diverse subjects as the abbot and apostolic preacher John of Cantimpre; the teenage saint Margaret of Ypres, an urban recluse who died at 21; Lutgard of Aywieres, a Cistercian nun and mystic; and the theatrical, mentally troubled Christina 'the Astonishing' of St-Trond. Thomas had few peers in portraying the ritual theatre of penance. He gives us such memorable scenes as a naked moneylender led out of a pit by a rope, a formerly rapacious prince kissing his peasants? feet as he restores their stolen goods, St Christina leaping into fires and boiling cauldrons to save souls in purgatory, and the deceased Pope Innocent III in agony, begging St Lutgard for her prayers. In this volume readers will find all four lively and eventful lives between the same covers for the first time. The Gesta Alberonis records the exploits of Albero von Montreuil (Archbishop of Trier, 1131-1152), portrayed as a daring hero doing battle on behalf of the 'Liberty of the Church'. During the late eleventh and early twelfth centuries, political and ecclesiastical rulers alike sought to clarify the responsibilities, rights, and obligations they had in common and those that were unique to their different but related kinds of rule. Balderich opens the Deeds with explicit reference to these struggles for power, which later came to be known as the Investiture Controversy. This conflict between the church and the German emperor centred on the question of control over the appointment of bishops: clergy and princes alternately allied with and fought against one another, seeking to consolidate their respective powers through different structures of governance. As a young cleric in Metz, Albero resisted an imperially appointed bishop. His audacious use of disguise while travelling on secret missions for his church show him to be very much a folk-hero. And once Albero had been appointed archbishop, Balderich characterizes him as the lynchpin in the actions of popes and kings. Albero ensured the election of King Conrad III, and led troops on campaigns in Italy and northern Germany. But it was Albero's rule as prince-bishop that proved paramount. Albero directed the spiritual affairs of the church in Trier while exercising political rule over the principality, and it is this aspect that is Balderich's principal focus, and which makes the Deeds the remarkable document that it is.
