‎A folding manuscript map / cadastral plan of the commune of Ports and the surrounding area. 8 pages folded and pasted together, drawn to one side only. The first pate is the text / permissions and authorisations signed and dated (with official stamp) by individuals involved with the project. ( 4 different individuals have written comments and signed the plan). This seems to have been drawn up to accompany a cleaning / repair project for the roads and bridges of the area. Attractive hand coloured plan of the area, with extra section added on paper (see photos) showing the whole of the commune of Ports, including sections of the river Vienne. The plan is drawn on tracing paper / glassine, pasted to stiff card. This is a little darkened, but without significant flaws. Nice detailing and quality of work. Despite the title, there are no bridges in this commune. 290 by 1820mm (11œ by 71Ÿ inches). .‎

‎Souvenir De Voyage 1895-1899.‎

These are Berlin 1895, French Alps and Nancy in 1896, Trier in 1897, Interlaken and the Swiss Alps in 1898 and the Tirol in 1899. The photographs were purchased from prominent commercial photographers of the time. The French photographs are largely from ND Phot, the Swiss from Schroeder & Cie of Zurich and Edition Photoglob. The majority of the prints are either albumen or early silver gelatin prints. As the early silver gelatin were so similar to albumen it is difficult to tell. There are a number of colourised prints. Most of the prints are quite large, with quite a few as large as 210 mm x 275 mm. Most are printed one to a page, but a couple of the smaller prints are printed two to a page. One of the images is a double / folding photograph. Album size 27cm x 36cm‎

175 x 115 mm‎

‎The Protestant Advocate: or a Review of Publications Relating to the Roman Catholic Question, and Repertory of Protestant Intelligence. in Four Volumes.‎

‎London: J. J. Stockdale, 41 Pall Mall, 1813-1816‎

‎First Edition. Four Volumes (complete). Recent half leather with gilt titles in six bands, with original boards. All issued. The Advocate was subsumed into the "Anti-Jacobin Review" in 1816. A Protestant / Anti-Catholic periodical with contributions from Shute Bishop of Durham, George Isaac Huntingford Bishop of Gloucester, George Tomline Bishop of Lincoln, Tomas Burgess Bishop of St. David's, George Canning, Granville Sharp, John Coxe, among others. The spines are new, and are in excellent clean and tidy condition. The boards are a little rubbed and darkened, but are still in sound shape. Internally the four volumes are in excellent condition. Clean and tidy, with very slight darkening only. Owner's monogrammed initials to each volume. A little light creasing to vol. 3. Overall, an excellent example. vi, [errata], 1-668., iv, 1-570., iv, 1-572., vii, 1-472. pp. Copac cites only two copies of the complete work, in the Cambridge Special Collections, and at Chetham's library, Manchester. This copy belonged to Gilbert Buchanan, and has his initials in the front of the volumes. Buchanan was a Church of England clergyman, who was one of the contributors to the Advocate (and the Gentleman's Magazine) under the pen name "Clericus Surriensis". An Anglo-American, he had left America during the Revolutionary War, and had become a clergyman. He spent much time collating copies of the Book of Common Prayer with that held at the Tower (the "Authorized Standard"). He was eventually involved in publishing a corrected edition. The letter contributed by him here has been lightly annotated and corrected in his hand, and signed by him.‎

‎The Nunnery Question A Report of the Great Catholic Meeting held as St Martins Hall, Long Acre, March 21 1854. To which is added the Catholic Declaration, with the list of signatures.‎

‎London: Burns and Lambert 1854‎

‎First Edition. Pamphlet. 8vo. Title page slightly darkened with a small closed tear and a couple of ink spots to the margin. Otherwise a clean copy. Recent paper wrappers. In 1853, Mr Chambers was given leave by parliament to introduce a bill to the Commons. The premise of the bill ('A bill to facilitate personal liberty in certain cases') gave wide access to a panel of commissioners to enter Roman Catholic convents with the aim of securing the freedom of those held there against their will. Catholics viewed this as a scurrilous anti-Catholic attack, and denied that any nuns were prisoners. They viewed the legislation as a reaction to the recent restoration of the Catholic hierarchy in England and Wales. The list of signatories to the rear begins with the Lords, whose names are led by Charles H Clifford & Francis Stonor.‎

‎The life, persecutions, and sufferings, of Sophia Dorothea, princess of Zell, wife of George the First, king of England, who was imprisoned thirty-six years in the castle of Ahlen in the electorate of Brunswick, on a charge of supposed incontinency. An authentic narrative.‎

‎London Dean and Munday 1820‎

‎Very scarce first edition. Circa 1820. With only half of the original folded colour frontispiece still intact. Darkened and with foxing to original. Sophia Dorothea of Brunswick-Lüneburg-Celle (1666 1726) was the wife of future King George I, and the mother of George II. It was her alleged affair with Philip Christoph von Königsmarck that led to her being imprisoned in the Castle of Ahlen for the last thirty years of her life. The term incontinency in this context eludes to her alleged 'sexual laxness'!‎

‎Two delightful engravings of a Pangolin‎

‎Two small, but charming, engravings of a Pangolin, or scaly anteater. One viewed from the rear (or above), and one curled in to a ball. Both on the same sheet of thick high quality cream paper. Deep impressions on each. They appear hand pressed. Perfect for framing. Image sizes: 60 x 100 mm and 60 x 40 mm respectively. Total sheet size: 275 x 145 mm (10Ÿ x 5Ÿ inches). Pangolins are mammals with large, protective keratin scales covering their skin. Nocturnal in nature, their diet consists of mainly ants and termites, which they capture using their very long tongues. Sadly, these delightful creatures are heavily under threat from poaching, and are the most trafficked mammals in the world.‎

‎Victorian Scraps Album.‎

300 x 250 mm.‎

‎Fabulous decorative gilt and black ruled red cloth album. Comprising 40 leaves with around 600 intricate cut-outs of commemorative cards and images. Many of these are from early Christmas cards and winter themes - mostly English text. Includes some fabulous flowers, birds, butterflies, traditional dress / costumes and caricatures - mostly French text. All beautifully cut out, then thoughtfully and carefully assembled. One or two are dated. Including an advertising postcard (possibly once perfumed) for Rimmel, dated 1865. Therefore, we assume it was created during the period 1860 - 1875. Boards are bumped on corners but otherwise the gilt clean and bright. Endpapers are toned / lightly foxed. Each leaf has a blank verso, but the cuts have transferred their shapes onto the verso preceding. 300 x 250 mm (11Ÿ x 9Ÿ inches).‎

‎First Edition. Illustrated publisher's soft covers. Undated but late 19th century (1870). Six charming colour plates depicting children enjoying Christmas and other holidays. The idea was for a child to cut out and glue the figures from separate sheets (not included) on to the scenes to complete the pictures. Or, it is suggested, the blanks could be hand coloured. There is a note to say: Gum Arabic dissolved in boiling water is the best material to make the cut-out figures adhesive. 12 pages. 265 x 230 mm (10œ x 9 inches). ‎William Dodd's Sermon Unmasked.‎

‎1778‎

‎Manuscript which appears to be the secrets of a sermon that Reverend Dr. William Dodd - AKA the Macaroni Parson - was to give. The term 'macaroni 'was a pejorative term used to describe a fashionable mid 18th century English man (later this would be known as 'Dandy'). The manuscript is anonymous, and written in a cryptic form. One a sheet folded in to four, one segment is reinforced / backed for strength by another piece of paper. One corner missing (doesn't affect the text). Overall in good condition. 375 x 230 mm (14Ÿ x 9 inches). Dodd was a Church of England clergyman and forger, who (despite public support) was convicted of a capital forgery at the Old Bailey, and was hanged at Tyburn in June 1777.‎

‎The Marvellous Adventures and Rare Conceits of Master Tyll Owlglass. Newly Collected, Chronicled and Set Forth, in our English Tongue. And Adorned with many most diverting and cunning devices. Second Edition. [Illustrated by A. Crowquill, pseud. A.H. Forrester].‎

‎8vo., Second Edition, with an engraved frontispiece, illustrated title in red and black, 6 fine wood-engraved plates FINELY COLOURED BY HAND and 26 engraved illustrations in the text, wanting front free endpaper, frontispiece and title lightly spotted; original pictorial red coarse-grain cloth, upper board elaborately blocked with multiple frame border in gilt and blind enclosing jester and title all in gilt, gilt back, gilt edges, bevelled boards, yellow endpapers, covers moderately age-soiled, corners scuffed, joints somewhat rubbed with one short tear, gathering cracked at F6-7 (but binding wholly sound) else a firm, tight copy. With Westley's binder's ticket on rear paste-down. Mackenzie's version of the German mediaeval classic was first published in 1860 as a Christmas volume, but stocks were swiftly exhausted and a second edition prepared to meet continuing demand. Mackenzie produced a lengthy additional preface to this second edition, attributing the success of the venture partly to 'the generous and unanimous verdict of the press' but also, surely, to the wonderful illustrations by 'Alfred Crowquill' (A.H. Forrester). Many would-be Christmas readers must have been disappointed for Mazkenzie dates his preface Christmas Eve, but scholars of mediaeval romance and fantasy will find this a most useful edition replete with extensive historical preface and bibliographical and other scholarly appendices. The US edition (T&F of Boston) of the same year is the first American edition of the tale in English. Scarce.‎
