‎The Sacred rule for the Order of St. Bridget with the additions, the explanation of the Order & Rule and the Rule of St. Augustine. From the Library of the Syon Abbey Bridgetine convent. Original quarter calf with dark blue buckram boards. Titles to the spine. Label of Syon Abbey to the rear board. Text is in old fashioned Gothic German. The binding is a little rubbed with some loss to the surface layer of the leather. Binding is still firm and holding together well. The paper itself is of a fairly cheap quality, but is clean and tidy throughout. Overall a nice example of this very scarce item. No copies on COPAC, and only one in the KVK catalogue of German and Austrian holdings. 141, [x] pp.‎

‎Edwardian Children's puzzle game‎

‎An attractive children's game. There a blocks of wood, with 6 paintings pasted onto the six sides, when placed together they make a picture showing children playing. Held in a wooden box, which once have a clasp (now broken). There are 4 chromolithographed illustrations in the box, and a fifth is pasted onto the lid. We suspect there was a sixth, now missing. The blocks have rubbing to the corners, with slight loss of image. The lithographs are on thin paper, and has small nicks and tears to the edges, but still attractive. Darkening to the image on the front board. Overall, an attractive game, showing signs of regular use. This was clearly British, from the red post box on the image to the lid of the box. The dating is from the children's clothing, particularly the sailor suit on the cover. 150 x 190 mm (6 x 7œ inches).‎

Début du 20e siècle, vers 1930, d'après le style et les vêtements nettement Art déco. Une jeune femme tient son chapeau contre le vent, tandis que sa jupe (coupée à la "longueur italienne") ondule. Elle tient son parapluie fermement enroulé contre le vent. Jolie mise en couleur. Filigrane sur le papier. Un peu d'usure dans les grandes marges. Gravure 350 mm x 195 mm. Dimensions totales : 460 mm x 300 mm.‎

‎A lovely copy of this German aquatint etching, signed (but indecipherable). With title "Ein Windstross." Early 20th Century, circa 1930 from the distinctly Art Deco styling and clothing. A young woman holds her hat against the wind, whilst her skirt (cut to the "Italian Length") billows. She holds her umbrella tightly furled against the wind. Nice colouring. Watermark to paper. A touch of edge wear to the large margins. Engraving 350 mm x 195 mm. Size in total: 460 mm x 300 mm. .‎

‎Italy NP 1695 Portrait à l'huile de Jésus. Vers 1690-1710. Sur toile avec un cadre plus tardif. Notre exemplaire est prétendument issu de l'école espagnole de peinture, mais après nos propres recherches, nous pensons qu'il est plus probable qu'il provienne d'Italie. Le titre du tableau indique qu'il a été peint d'après l'image d'Edessene du roi Abgar. Il semble qu'il s'agisse d'une copie de l'image d'Édesse, qui se rapporte à la mission du roi Abgar V, roi d'Édesse du premier siècle, qui tenait une étoffe portant l'image du Christ. On l'appelait le Mandylion et il semble avoir été très similaire au linceul de Turin. Le roi Abgar aurait écrit une lettre à Jésus et aurait reçu une réponse dictée par Jésus. Nous n'avons trouvé qu'un petit nombre de portraits similaires de Jésus portant la même inscription (ou une inscription similaire). L'un d'entre eux se trouve dans une église de Varralo (Italie) et est daté de 1694. (Il a apparemment été peint à l'occasion de la translation du Suaire à la cathédrale de Turin en 1694). Le diocèse de Turin possède apparemment trois autres copies de l'image d'Abagarum. Une copie plus tardive se trouve également au musée de Lausanne. La plupart des portraits en ligne sont d'une qualité inférieure à cet exemple. Sur fond noir, le visage de Jésus est entouré d'une auréole, qui émane également de sa barbe (cette auréole montrant des jets de lumière semble être l'un des traits distinctifs de l'image d'Abagarum). La peinture est en excellent état, avec de légères bulles par endroits. Il n'y a ni perte ni rayure. La peinture se trouve sur une toile ancienne et assombrie, fixée sur un cadre en bois solide. L'avant du cadre semble être une couche postérieure, ajoutée à l'avant de la toile. Celle-ci est de couleur vert foncé. L'encadrement présente quelques frottements et des pertes de peinture en surface. La surface peinte mesure 50 cm x 41 cm et le cadre 59 cm x 49 cm. La profondeur est d'environ 5 cm. Il est possible qu'il s'agisse d'une copie plus tardive d'un portrait d'Abagarum, mais il s'agit néanmoins d'un bel exemple d'iconographie.‎

‎Oil portrait of Jesus. Circa 1690-1710. On canvas with a later frame. Our copy is allegedly from the Spanish school of painting, however, following our own research, we feel it more likely to have Italian provenance. The title to the painting, states that this was painted after the Edessene image of King Abgar. This seems to have been a copy of the Edessa image - which relates to the mission to King Abgar V, a First century king of Edessa, who held a cloth bearing the image of Christ. This was called the Mandylion, and it seems to have been very similar to the Turin shroud. King Abgar was believed to have written a letter to Jesus, and to have received a reply dictated by Jesus. We can find only a small number of similar portraits of Jesus with the same (or similar) inscription. One is in the possession of a Church in Varralo (Italy) and is dated to 1694. (It was apparently painted on the occasion of the translation of the Shroud to the Cathedral in Turin in 1694). There are apparently in the Diocese of Turin three other copies of the Abagarum image. There is also a later copy in the Lausanne Museum. The majority of the portraits online are of a lower standard of portraiture than this example. Black background with the face of Jesus, surrounded by a halo, which also emanates from his beard (this halo showing shoots of light seems to be one of the distinguishing features of the Abagarum image). The paint is in excellent condition, with just slight bubbling in areas. There is no loss or scratching. The painting is on and old and darkened canvas, held on a sturdy wooden frame. The front of the frame appears to be a later layer, added to the front of the canvas surround. This is in dark green. The surround has some rubbing and loss of surface paint to it. The painted area is 50cm x 41cm and the frame 59cm x 49cm. Approximately 5cm deep. It is possible that this is a later copy of an Abagarum portrait, but is nevertheless a lovely example of iconography. .‎

‎Original Water Colour of a Geisha holding a Shamisen‎

‎Japan NP 1775 Une belle grande aquarelle représentant une femme en tenue traditionnelle de geisha, tenant un shamisen * Peinte sur un papier fin de couleur moutarde, celui-ci a été posé sur une feuille de support crème (également en papier fin), elle-même posée sur une feuille plus grande de papier fin. Les trois feuilles réunies donnent beaucoup plus de solidité qu'une seule feuille mince. La peinture elle-même a été réalisée par des experts, mais elle n'est pas signée. (Nous avons fixé le prix comme étant celui d'un artiste non attribuable). La peinture présente quelques petites fissures, des plis et une minuscule perte de peinture, mais il s'agit toujours d'une belle et authentique uvre d'art Edo, dont le style est très similaire à celui des portraits de Katsushika Hokusai (jusqu'à la couleur de fond de la feuille). Elle date d'une période très similaire (entre 1775 et 1800). Le style de la peinture, y compris la représentation détaillée des motifs des vêtements et la posture gracieuse du personnage, est caractéristique des bijin-ga (peintures de belles femmes), qui étaient populaires dans l'art japonais à cette époque. L'utilisation de couleurs vives, comme le bleu profond et le rouge, et de motifs complexes suggère que cette pièce a pu être créée par un artiste influencé par l'ukiyo-e, un genre d'estampes et de peintures sur bois qui a fleuri pendant la période Edo. Des artistes comme Kitagawa Utamaro ou Suzuki Harunobu étaient réputés pour leurs représentations similaires de femmes en tenue élégante. La feuille peinte mesure 70 cm x 24 cm. ‎A lovely large water colour, showing a woman in traditional geisha clothing, holding a Shamisen.* Painted onto thin mustard coloured paper, this has been laid onto a cream backing sheet (also thin paper), which has in turn been laid onto a larger sheet of thin paper. The three sheets together giving much more strength than a single thin sheet. The painting itself has been expertly produced, but is unsigned. (We have priced this as an un-attributable artist). The painting has some small cracks with creasing and a tiny amount of paint loss to it, but still a lovely, authentic piece of Edo art, very similar in style to the portraiture of Katsushika Hokusai (even to the background colour of the sheet). It is of a very similar period (between 1775 and 1800). The style of the painting, including the detailed depiction of clothing patterns and the graceful posture of the figure, is characteristic of bijin-ga (paintings of beautiful women), which were popular in Japanese art during this time. The use of vibrant colors, such as deep blue and red, and intricate patterns suggests that this piece may have been created by an artist influenced by ukiyo-e, a genre of woodblock prints and paintings that flourished during the Edo period. Artists like Kitagawa Utamaro or Suzuki Harunobu were renowned for similar depictions of women in elegant attire.It was possibly intended as a scroll painting. The painted sheet measures 70cm x 24cm. The largest backing sheet (and hence work overall) measures 81.5cm x 39cm. *The shamisen (???), also known as sangen (??) or samisen (all meaning "three strings"), is a three-stringed traditional Japanese musical instrument derived from the Chinese instrument sanxian. Geisha's were often skilled Shamisen players, and used them to entertain their customers. .‎

Il n'y a pas d'indication sur ce que cela signifie, il pourrait s'agir d'une référence d'un vendeur de meubles ou d'une archive d'une photothèque. Nous pensons qu'il s'agit de la première hypothèse (il faut résister à la tentation de supposer que N.D. est sans date, car en français, il s'agirait de S.D.) La photographie présente quelques plis et marques légères. L'ensemble de meubles figurant sur l'image est de style Louis XV (rococo), caractérisé par des sculptures ornementales, des pieds cabriole et des motifs de coquilles, autant de caractéristiques des arts décoratifs français du milieu du XVIIIe siècle. 24cm x 29cm.‎

‎An attractive photograph of three pieces of Rococo furniture. Numbered by hand #385 N.D. There is no indication what this means, it could be a furniture seller's reference, or a photo library archive. We suspect the former (the temptation to assume that N.D. is no date should be resisted, as in French this would be S.D.) The photograph has some light creasing and marking to it. The furniture set in the image is in the French Louis XV (Rococo) style, characterized by its ornate carvings, cabriole legs, and shell motifs, all hallmarks of mid-18th-century French decorative arts. 24cm x 29cm. .‎

‎Indre-Loire Service Hydraulique 1853 Plan manuscrit dépliant de la commune de Ports et de ses environs. 8 pages pliées et collées, dessinées d'un seul côté. La première page est le texte / permissions et autorisations signées et datées (avec cachet officiel) par les personnes impliquées dans le projet. (4 personnes différentes ont écrit des commentaires et signé le plan). Ce plan semble avoir été établi pour accompagner un projet de nettoyage / réparation des routes et des ponts de la région. Joli plan de la région, colorié à la main, avec une section supplémentaire ajoutée sur papier (voir photos) montrant l'ensemble de la commune de Ports, y compris des sections de la rivière Vienne. ‎A folding manuscript map / cadastral plan of the commune of Ports and the surrounding area. 8 pages folded and pasted together, drawn to one side only. The first pate is the text / permissions and authorisations signed and dated (with official stamp) by individuals involved with the project. ( 4 different individuals have written comments and signed the plan). This seems to have been drawn up to accompany a cleaning / repair project for the roads and bridges of the area. Attractive hand coloured plan of the area, with extra section added on paper (see photos) showing the whole of the commune of Ports, including sections of the river Vienne. The plan is drawn on tracing paper / glassine, pasted to stiff card. This is a little darkened, but without significant flaws. Nice detailing and quality of work. Despite the title, there are no bridges in this commune. 290 by 1820mm (11œ by 71Ÿ inches). .‎

‎Plymouth n/a 1829 Une jolie aquarelle française de la plage et du port de Plymouth, avec titre et date de 1829. Montée sur carton blanc (un peu assombri). L'image elle-même est en très bon état lumineux. Tenu dans un cadre en bois plus tard (milieu du XXe siècle). L'aquarelle mesure 13,5 cm x 9 cm. Le cadre mesure 22 cm x 18 cm.‎

‎An attractive original watercolour of the beach and harbour at Plymouth, with title and date of 1829. By unknown French artist. Mounted on white card (somewhat darkened). The picture itself is in very good, bright condition. Held in a later (mid 20th century) wooden frame. Watercolour is 13.5cm x 9cm Frame is 22cm x 18cm.‎

‎Un bel album, contenant 74 grandes photographies originales de cinq voyages. Il s'agit de Berlin 1895, des Alpes françaises et de Nancy en 1896, de Trèves en 1897, d'Interlaken et des Alpes suisses en 1898 et du Tyrol en 1899. Les photographies ont été achetées auprès d'éminents photographes commerciaux de l'époque. Les photographies françaises sont en grande partie de ND Phot, les suisses de Schroeder & Cie de Zurich et d'Edition Photoglob. La majorité des épreuves sont soit à l'albumine, soit à des épreuves gélatino-argentiques anciennes. Comme la première gélatine d'argent était si semblable à l'albumine, il est difficile de le dire. Il existe un certain nombre d'imprimés colorisés. La plupart des tirages sont assez grands, avec un bon nombre aussi grand que 21 cm x 27,5 cm La plupart sont imprimés un à une page, mais quelques-uns des plus petits tirages sont imprimés deux à une page. L'une des images est une photographie double / pliante. Taille de l'album 27 cm x 36 cm‎

‎A lovely album, containing 74 large original photographs from five trips. These are Berlin 1895, French Alps and Nancy in 1896, Trier in 1897, Interlaken and the Swiss Alps in 1898 and the Tirol in 1899. The photographs were purchased from prominent commercial photographers of the time. The French photographs are largely from ND Phot, the Swiss from Schroeder & Cie of Zurich and Edition Photoglob. The majority of the prints are either albumen or early silver gelatin prints. As the early silver gelatin were so similar to albumen it is difficult to tell. There are a number of colourised prints. Most of the prints are quite large, with quite a few as large as 210 mm x 275 mm. Most are printed one to a page, but a couple of the smaller prints are printed two to a page. One of the images is a double / folding photograph. Album size 27cm x 36cm‎

‎Scarce reprint (improved and revised 10th edition) of the original business pamphlet had become necessary as, within three years of the original, the contents were viewed more as a practical text book than a promotional item. At the time, saccharin was considered be a good inclusion, as - to quote this booklet - it never creates acidity or heartburn, and is, in these respects, far healthier than sugar! Blue soft covers are a little creased at edges, and inside the staples holding the booklet together are somewhat rusted. Overall good. 48 pages. 210 x 135 mm (8Œ x 5Œ inches).‎
