China N.P. c.1930. Original wooden boards with Chinese character carved to the upper board. Accordion-style pages with 10 vibrantly hand coloured illustrations on silk with accompanying descriptive text pages in Chinese and English. A very good copy the binding firm with a vertical stress split to the upper board. The contents with occasional spotting are otherwise in good order and free from any previous owners' inscriptions or stamps. The illustrations remain clean and bright. A beautiful collection of hand coloured illustrations depicting seven characters from Chinese mythology each accompanied by an animal companion. There are numerous variations of these books with many different sets of illustrations of varying quality. Those found in the present volume are particularly good examples - well-executed and nicely coloured. Provenance: from the library of Martin Stone.
