RADICAL & PROLETARIAN LITERATURE Anon
A Living without a Boss. Illustrated
New York: Harper and Brothers 1911. First Edition. Anonymously-written account of a newspaperman's escape from urban dependency and rebirth as a farmer and rural real-estate agent. Marketed as a straight memoir but clearly incorporating fictional elements -- we have tried but been unable to track down the original copyright entry to determine authorship. Not in Smith American Fiction 1901-1925 . Highly uncommon in dustwrapper. Demi octavo 18cm. RADICAL & PROLETARIAN LITERATURE UTOPIAS NIMES Joseph A. Anon
Aristocracy. A Novel
New York: D. Appleton & Co 1888. First Edition. Paperback. A social satire on the English aristocracy and a profoundly misanthropic work. Perhaps intended as a response to Henry Adams' Democracy which had been published eight years earlier. Features as a protagonist a young ".American from San Francisco the only son of a millionaire who . serves as the mouthpiece for all the American sentiment and criticism and as the object of the insults of the 'aristocracy'.'' from the reviewer's summary in Bowker's Annual American Catalogue for 1888. Negley lists the title as a utopia though a perusal of the contents by this cataloguer reveals no obvious utopian elements. Published anonymously by one Joseph A. Nimes whose name apparently does not appear as an author on any other work fictional or otherwise per NUC OCLC and Wright. Nimes' desire for anonymity may have been the result of the quality of his writing which is not high; or more likely a desire to avoid offending acquaintances as the Bowker reviewer adds that ".the people introduced are in many cases easily recognized under a thin disguise of fictitious names.there is no redeemable character among them all being hopelessley wicked or stupid or brutal or all three together." WRIGHT III:126. NEGLEY 848. Wrappered issue issued simultaneously in cloth in the publisher's "Town and Country Library" series. Small octavo. Salmon thick-paper wrappers printed in black; 2573pp. Minor external wear; faint marginal damp-mark to upper corner of last two leaves away from text; a Very Good or better copy in the original printed wrappers. Final two pages are ads. D. Appleton & Co paperback

RADICAL & PROLETARIAN LITERATURE Anon
Trash" Anonymous manuscript poem of 149 lines 5pp in the voice of a Depression-era refugee
N.p. N.d. A highly accomplished and moving long poem written in the voice of an unemployed mill-town woman during the Great Depression. Unattributed and undated but apparently based on paper and degree of wear contemporary with the events described. Whether actually written by an unemployed mill-worker's wife or by a "trained" writer adopting that voice for proletarian effect the poem is remarkable for its unpretentious style and its graphic realistic depiction of the tribulations of unemployed workers during the Great Depression. From its opening line: "All I've ever done in this / Damned life of mine is cry" the poem recounts a series of bleak episodes in a poor southern woman's life: "My man was workin' full - / But now the mill's down / We're all down. / But we still gotta eat / We still got babies to feed . Them big guys up there / They got their bellys full / They got plenty of coal. / Their kids don't have to / Walk tracks lookin' for coal." The author goes on to relate her battles with the "government man" and the WPA but ends the work on a hopeful note: "I'm just so glad that / They give free books at schools / Cause now my boys and girls / Can finish high school And then they'll always have jobs . Too much around me that don't look nice So I'm gonna keep thinking somepin' that is nice." The poem is unknown to us in any published version though the setting and theme are by no means unique for the period. Original typescript 5pp on ruled bond. Typed rectos-only. Light soil; single horizontal fold; Very Good. unknown

REVOLUTIONS of 1848 GERMANY Anon
Demokratische Thronrede um 22sten Mai 1848 nicht gehalten. Dem demokratische Klubb gewidmet
Berlin: 1848: Vereins Buchdruckerei. Ephemera. Satirical broadside in the form of a fictional speech by King Friedrich Wilhelm IV in which he ironically expresses support for the demands made by liberal parliamentarians at the May 18th Parliamentary Assembly in Frankfurt-am-Main. These included expanded rights for the underprivileged classes including most importantly universal male suffrage; attenuation of executive power; the election of a permanent German parliament and monetary reforms including a unified German currency. The great wave of liberal revolt that washed over the European Continent in 1848 proved short-lived; by 1851 most of the newly-established liberal régimes had been quashed by reactionary movements with radical leaders either imprisoned murdered or driven into exile. Out of this crucible would arise the Franco-Prussian War and the militant Marxist nihilist and anarchist movements of later in the century. A highly evocative document of the first wave of German radical revolt. Rare; OCLC and KVK note three locations only all in Germany. Broadside 27cm x 20cm ca 10-3/4" x 8". Printed in blackletter on white wove stock. Slightly toned with old vertical and horizontal fold-lines; creased at margins; Very Good. Vereins Buchdruckerei unknown

RYUKYUAN MISSION TO EDO. ANON
Ryukyujin gyosoki trans.: The Record of the Ryukyuan Mission to Edo in 1790 or The Record of the Ryukyu People's Procession in Costumes
24 full-page woodcut illus. 17 folding leaves. Small oblong 8vo orig. wrappers wrappers somewhat defective orig. block-printed title label on upper cover new stitching. Kyoto: Iseya Shosuke et al. 1790. First edition and very rare; no copy in WorldCat. Following Japan's 1609 invasion of the Ryukyu Kingdom today's Okinawa the Kingdom became a vassal to the Japanese feudal domain of Satsuma and was expected to make periodic diplomatic visits to the shogunate in Edo to pay tribute. During the Edo period there were 18 such diplomatic missions Edo nobori or "the going up of Ryukyu to Edo" which included royal princes high-ranking government officials merchants craftsmen scholars etc. These diplomatic exchanges were based on models established by the Chinese but were modified as the needs of the Japanese were somewhat different. Every mission had a reason: either to congratulate a new shogun on his succession or in connection with the accession of a new king of Ryukyu. This is a record of the 1790 mission the thirteenth to Edo; there were 96 members of this entourage and the round-trip journey took a year. The lead envoy was Prince Ginowan 1765-1827; the delegation came to Edo to congratulate Tokugawa Ienari 1773-1841 who had become shogun three years earlier. The attractive woodcuts depict the ships from Ryukyu as well as the Japanese fiefdom lords' escort ships. The following woodcuts depict members of the entourage as well as members of the receiving fiefdom's representatives and the carriage of the fiefdom lord himself. The foreign visitors were required by lord of the Satsuma fiefdom to wear Chinese-looking attire to demonstrate their foreignness thereby emphasizing the glory and power of the Satsuma the only feudal lords in Japan to enjoy the fealty of a foreign kingdom. We see woodcuts of musicians banner carriers a carriage holding the official documents Prince Ginowan in his carriage government officials all named and many priests. There is extensive text explaining the activities of the visiting delegation during their stay. We also find a short dictionary of Ryukyu words and a list of gifts: swords art objects including lacquerware textiles bashofu incense awamori liquor bells dolls minoshi paper and foods. Apart from the wear to the wrappers a nice copy. unknown
