Staining to half title page and slight foxing to title. Otherwise a very good copy - clean bright and unmarked - of an important eighteenth century political pamphlet. Reference: ESTC No. T82992. ~LLL~ A stinging rebuke to the lambasting in print of the Prince of Wales the future King George IV in a pamphlet entitled 'A Short Review of the Political State of Great Britain' which had been published anonymously in January 1787 by author Nathaniel William Wraxall 1751-1831 and which had attracted a great deal of attention and sales. Within a few days after publication of the 'court pamphlet' six editions each consisting of 1000 or 1500 copies were sold and the publisher Debrett which also issued this response estimated the total sales of the English edition it was also translated into French at 17000 copies. Authorship of this reply is sometimes attributed to Irish-born British politician and pamphleteer Sir Philip Francis the supposed author of the 'Letters of Junius' and the chief antagonist of Warren Hastings 1732-1818. Francis' accusations against Hastings led to the Impeachment of Warren Hastings by Parliament which has been described as 'probably the British Isles' most famous certainly the longest political trial.' In the introduction to Wraxall's posthumous memoirs editor Henry Wheatley comments 'Wraxall says that the Prince of Wales sent repeatedly to Debrett the publisher peremptorily demanding to know from him the name of the author and menacing him with prosecution for libel. If this was the case it seems probable that the secret of the authorship was well kept for a few years after Wraxall was on friendly terms with the Prince of Wales and it is scarcely probable that the Prince suspected the authorship of the pamphlet.' . Whitledge' London 3 3/4 x 6 1/2 inches tall full leather bound a recent binding employing plum-colored Morocco gilt lettering to spine marbled endpapers 112 8 pp. Contemporaneous prior owner name to title page. A few pages with very minor creasing. Otherwise a near fine copy - remarkably clean and bright with no foxing noted - of a scarce and important Anglican catechism. Reference: ESTC No. T209013. Only four institutional copies worldwide according to the English Short-Title Catalog - two at the Lambeth Palace Library one at Oxford University's Bodleian Library and one at the University of California at Riverside Library. Though not listed on the title page this Anglican instructional/devotional manual written to assist the faithful in preparing for communion is by Edmund Gibson 1669 - 1748 who signed his prefatory 'To the Inhabitants of the Parish of Lambeth.' Gibson was a British divine who served as Bishop of Lincoln and Bishop of London jurist and antiquary. This 1705 edition was followed by editions in 1709 and 1711 from the same London printer and from 1723 to 1745 another four editions were issued by other London printers under the title 'The sacrament of the Lord's Supper explain'd' with these later editions crediting Gibson as the author on the title page. ~KKK~ Edmund Gibson was born in Bampton Westmorland. In 1686 he was entered a scholar at Queen's College Oxford. Shortly after Thomas Tenison's elevation to the see of Canterbury in 1694 Gibson was appointed chaplain and librarian to the archbishop and in 1703 and 1710 respectively he became rector of Lambeth and archdeacon of Surrey. While a conservative in church politics and opposed to Methodism he was no persecutor and indeed broke with Sir Robert Walpole 1676 - 1745 on the Quakers' Relief Bill of 1736. He exercised oversight over the morals of his diocese; and his denunciation of the masquerades which were popular at court finally lost him the royal favour. He served as a founding governor of a charity called the Foundling Hospital. His endorsement can be seen as significant since the Foundling Hospital created by royal charter was the nation's first non-church initiated institution to target this sort of social ill. Refers to the Gordon Riots also called No-Popery Riots that took place in London in June 1780. The Anti-Catholic agitation was instigated by Lord George Gordon. From Wikipedia: "The Gordon Riots of 1780 began as an anti-Catholic protest in London against the Papists Act of 1778 which intended to reduce official discrimination against British Catholics. The protest evolved into riots and looting. The Gordon Riots by Charles Green. The Popery Act 1698 had imposed a number of penalties and disabilities on Roman Catholics in England; the 1778 Act eliminated some of these. An initial peaceful protest led on to widespread rioting and looting and was the most destructive in the history of London. Painted on the wall of Newgate prison was the proclamation that the inmates had been freed by the authority of "His Majesty King Mob". The term "King Mob" afterwards denoted an unruly and fearsome proletariat.The Riots came at the height of the American War of Independence when Britain was fighting American rebels France Spain and the Dutch Republic.
