‎BENET, WILLIAM ROSE, AND AIKEN, CONRAD (EDITORS)‎

‎An Anthology of Famous English and American Poetry‎

‎New York, The Modern Library, n.y. Hardcover. 8vo. Green cloth with gilt spine lettering and medallion, pictorial price-clipped dust jacket. xxvi, 961pp, (2pp ads). Near fine/very good. Faint jacket edgewear. A tight, most attractive later printing (undated, but jacket and binding clues point to 1966) of Modern Library Giant #G-67, first published in 1945. This copy bears a fine autograph addition: Tipped to an inner flyleaf is a handsome Typed Note Signed from Benét, 1p, 5¼" X 8", New York, NY, 18 May 1939. Addressed to future notable Lincoln and Civil War scholar Arnold F. Gates (1914-93). Near fine. On "The Saturday Review of Literature" letterhead which cites him as contributing editor, Benét comments, "Yes, my son has returned from Spain and is now on the editorial staff of The New Republic. I am glad you like The Saturday Review..." Boldly signed in black ink. (Benét's son, James Walker (1914-2012), was a journalist and author and one of the last surviving members of the Abraham Lincoln Brigade, American volunteers who fought for the Republic in the Spanish Civil War.) Benét (1886-1950) was a prolific American editor, writer, and Pulitzer Prize-winning poet (1942) as well as brother of famed Pulitzer Prize-winning poet Stephen Vincent Benét. Lovely copy of this (to cite front jacket panel) "comprehensive collection of Anglo-American poetry from Chaucer to Auden in England and from our own Revolutionary time through the Second World War" -- in nice jacket and with unusual letter from co-editor. .‎
