L'édition originale publiée à Francfort en 1700, avait suscité l'indignation des Juifs, qui avaient obtenu de l’empereur Léopold Ier (Vienne 1640-1705) la saisie de l'ouvrage et l'interdiction de le réimprimer dans les limites du Saint-Empire romain. « Un siècle et demi après l’intervention de Luther [avec son libelle Sur les Juifs et leurs mensonges, 1543], une nouvelle compilation d’arguments antijuifs paraît en Allemagne, due à un hébraïsant, Johann Andreas Einsenmenger (1654-1704). Son ouvrage, Entdecktes Judenthum (« Le Judaïsme dévoilé »), paru en 1700, de plus grande ampleur que le pamphlet de Luther, se présente comme une véritable encyclopédie antijuive [...] « Le Judaïsme dévoilé » est caractérisé par l’historien Helmut Berding comme « un ouvrage de référence de l’antijudaïsme aux débuts de l’ère moderne, où se trouvaient rassemblés tous les préjugés antijudaïques existant depuis le Moyen Âge ». L’historien Frank E. Manuel voyait dans l’ouvrage d’Eisenmenger l’acte de naissance de la « judéophobie scientifique ». [...] « Le Judaïsme dévoilé » d’Eisenmenger est par ailleurs devenu le modèle fondateur d’un genre littéraire antijuif : la dénonciation sur le mode du dévoilement ou du démasquage » (Pierre-André Taguieff, Aux origines du slogan "Sionistes, assassins !" in Les études du CRIF, n° 20).« Du temps des Teutoniques puis pendant encore assez longtemps après, les Juifs n’étaient pas autorisés à s’établir en Prusse. Mais, dans la seconde moitié du XVIIe siècle, l’Électeur se montra mieux disposé envers les marchands juifs, pourvu que leur nombre demeurât contrôlé et que leur présence fût profitable aux finances de l’État. Leur présence et la concurrence qu’elle pouvait entraîner demeurèrent mal acceptées de la population. Le plus souvent, les autorisations restèrent limitées dans le temps (par exemple pour des foires) et en nombre de bénéficiaires. Mais, peu à peu et discrètement, une communauté juive s’établit à Königsberg : en 1680, un lieu de prière lui fut autorisé dans la sauveté du Château, puis en 1703 un cimetière, ce qui entraîna la formation l’année suivante d’une confrérie chargée d’ensevelir les morts (Chewra Kaddischa). À cette date, il y avait environ 30 chefs de famille juifs, venus de Pologne et de Lituanie, mais quatre seulement ayant reçu un document (Schutzbrief ) reconnaissant leur droit à s’établir dans une ville où les autres n’étaient que tolérés. Dans la première moitié du XVIIIe siècle, c’est sous la protection électorale puis royale que s’organisa la communauté. En 1744, elle reçut son premier rabbin, Levis Epstein, venu de Grodno, et un hôpital fut créé, rapidement d’ailleurs enjeu de conflits internes. Elle reçut l’autorisation d’édifier une synagogue dans le faubourg méridional de la ville. Commencée en 1753, elle fut achevée trois ans plus tard. Dans les décennies qui suivirent se dessina de plus en plus une ligne de partage dans la minorité juive de Königsberg en fonction de l’attitude à adopter face aux Lumières et à l’intégration dans la société prussienne. Le phénomène avait commencé dans l’élite socio-culturelle de la communauté, représentée notamment par la famille Friedländer arrivée ici en 1718. Königsberg est, avec Berlin, un des lieux où la rencontre s’est effectuée entre le judaïsme et les Lumières. En 1779, lorsque Salomon Maimon se rendit à Königsberg, son vêtement et le fait qu’il parlait yiddish lui valurent d’être la cible des moqueries d’une partie de ses coreligionnaires. Voluminöser Pergamentband der Zeit (Rückendeckel etwas fleckig). *Seltenes antisemitisches Werk, zweite Auflage (erste im Buchhandel verlegte). Die erste Ausgabe von 1700 wurde vom österreichischen Kaiser Leopold I. auf Wunsch der jüdischen Gemeinde in Frankfurt unterdrückt, die eine antisemitische Reaktion auf die Veröffentlichung des Werkes befürchtete. Die 2000 gedruckten Exemplare wurden 51 Jahre lang von der Öffentlichkeit ferngehalten. 11 Jahre später erlaubte der preußische König Friedrich I. den Erben Eisenmengers, 1711 eine zweite Auflage des Buches zu veröffentlichen, die in Königsberg gedruckt wurde, wohin die kaiserliche Zensur nicht reichte. Der Inhalt des Werkes bildete die angeblich "wissenschaftliche" Grundlage für den Antisemitismus, indem er durch Zitate aus hebräischen Quellen "bewies", dass das jüdische Denken antichristlich sei. Alle bis dahin längst, auch von christlicher Seite, widerlegten Lügenmärchen (Brunnenvergiftung, Pest, Blutbeschuldigung u.v.a.) wurden in diesem Buch neu aufgetischt und als unerschütterliche Wahrheiten dargestellt. Unter dem Vorwand, in 19-jährger Arbeit ein Quellenwerk zum Judentum zu erstellen, vereinigt er aber tatsächlich eine Vielzahl von antijudaistischen Stereotypen, die bereits im Mittelalter verwurzelt waren. Zwar kann man dem Autor eine große Gelehrsamkeit - er sprach Hebräisch, Aramäisch, Arabisch und kannte die gesamte rabbinische Literatur - doch traf er eine einseitige Auswahl an jüdischen Quellen, nahm tendenziöse Deutungen vor und übersetzte die zahlreichen Zitate teilweise falsch. Der vorliegenden Ausgabe verlieh man den außerhalb des Reichsgebiet liegenden preußischen Druckort Königsberg, sie erschien aber tatsächlich in Berlin (eine erste Ausgabe erschien 1700 in Frankfurt, die erste offizielle Ausgabe im Reichsgebiet 1751). So war die vorliegende Ausgabe, für welche die Erben Eisenmengers eine Druckerlaubnis beim preußischen König Friedrich I. erlangt hatten, die erste im Handel zugängliche. Obwohl in Berlin gedruckt, wurde der Druckort fingiert, da Königsberg außerhalb des Reichsgebietes lag. Nachdem der Heidelberger Professor für orientalische Sprachen Eisenmenger (1654-1704) mehr als 19 Jahre lang Stoff für sein großes polemisches Werk gegen das Judentum gesammelt hatte, entschloß er sich zur Herausgabe des Buches. "Eisenmengers Übersetzungen hebräischer Texte sind oft fehlerhaft und dazu tendenziös entstellt, auch Verleumdungen wie Brunnenvergiftung und Ritualmord fehlen nicht, dennoch ist Eisenmenger mit diesem Werk, das ihm eine Professur für orientalische Sprachen an der Universität Heidelberg eintrug, der Begründer des neuzeitlichen wissenschaftlichen Antisemitismus geworden. Auf jüdischen Protest am Hof in Wien hin wurde aber die ganze Auflage von 2000 Exemplaren bis auf wenige Stücke mit Arrest belegt. Nach seinem Tode erwirkten die Erben die Erlaubnis einer Neuauflage bei Friedrich I. von Preußen, die 1711 in Berlin (Druckort Königsberg) erschien. 1740 wurde schließlich auch die 1. In his youth he was attracted to modern Hebrew literature and while in his teens corresponded with Jewish scholars, such as Slonimski and Buber. While still in Russia he published Zioni (Warsaw, 1895; Parts 2-4, Vilna 1899-1902), a biographical dictionary of contemporary rabbis and scholars, and Rabbanei Minsk va-Hakhameha, on the rabbis and scholars of Minsk (Vilna, 1899), as well as Ve-Zot li-Yehudah (1901), annotations on Noda bi-Yehudah, the responsa of Ezekiel Landau. In 1903 he emigrated to the U.S. where, in addition to talmudic works, he continued to publish biographical works on well-known rabbis, scholars and communal leaders. From 1899 to 1910 Eisenstadt officiated as government-appointed rabbi of Rostov, and from 1911 to 1923 held the same position in St.Petersburg. He subsequently immigrated to France, and in 1926 was appointed rabbi of the Ohel Ya'akov community of the Russian Jews in Paris.
