Voluminöser Pergamentband der Zeit (Rückendeckel etwas fleckig). *Seltenes antisemitisches Werk, zweite Auflage (erste im Buchhandel verlegte). Die erste Ausgabe von 1700 wurde vom österreichischen Kaiser Leopold I. auf Wunsch der jüdischen Gemeinde in Frankfurt unterdrückt, die eine antisemitische Reaktion auf die Veröffentlichung des Werkes befürchtete. Die 2000 gedruckten Exemplare wurden 51 Jahre lang von der Öffentlichkeit ferngehalten. 11 Jahre später erlaubte der preußische König Friedrich I. den Erben Eisenmengers, 1711 eine zweite Auflage des Buches zu veröffentlichen, die in Königsberg gedruckt wurde, wohin die kaiserliche Zensur nicht reichte. Der Inhalt des Werkes bildete die angeblich "wissenschaftliche" Grundlage für den Antisemitismus, indem er durch Zitate aus hebräischen Quellen "bewies", dass das jüdische Denken antichristlich sei. Alle bis dahin längst, auch von christlicher Seite, widerlegten Lügenmärchen (Brunnenvergiftung, Pest, Blutbeschuldigung u.v.a.) wurden in diesem Buch neu aufgetischt und als unerschütterliche Wahrheiten dargestellt. Eisenstadt was an American Hebraist, rabbi, and scholar. Eisenstadt was born in Kletsk, Belorussia. In his youth he was attracted to modern Hebrew literature and while in his teens corresponded with Jewish scholars, such as Slonimski and Buber. While still in Russia he published Zioni (Warsaw, 1895; Parts 2-4, Vilna 1899-1902), a biographical dictionary of contemporary rabbis and scholars, and Rabbanei Minsk va-Hakhameha, on the rabbis and scholars of Minsk (Vilna, 1899), as well as Ve-Zot li-Yehudah (1901), annotations on Noda bi-Yehudah, the responsa of Ezekiel Landau. In 1903 he emigrated to the U.S. where, in addition to talmudic works, he continued to publish biographical works on well-known rabbis, scholars and communal leaders. They include Hakhmei Yisrael be-Amerikah (with photographs, 1903), Dorot ha-Aharonim (2 vols., 1913, 1917), Anshei ha-Shem Be-Arzot ha-Brit (1933) and, posthumously Benei Hiyyon (1952)" (EJ). Born in Belorussia, he studied at the yeshivah of Volozhin, and from 1889 at the university and 'Hochschule für die Wissenschaft des Judentums' in Berlin. He wrote his doctoral thesis on "Bible Criticism in Talmudic Literature" in 1898. From 1899 to 1910 Eisenstadt officiated as government-appointed rabbi of Rostov, and from 1911 to 1923 held the same position in St.Petersburg. He subsequently immigrated to France, and in 1926 was appointed rabbi of the Ohel Ya'akov community of the Russian Jews in Paris.
