ELI SHAUL SHAUL.
From Balat to Bat Yam: Memoirs of a Turkish Jew.
New English Paperback. Pbo. Cr. 8vo. (20 x 14 cm). In English. 243 p. " Eli Shaul (1916-2004) was a Turkish Jew. After spending his childhood in the colorful Balat neighborhood, he received a superb education at the prestigious Istanbul Erkek Lisesi (Istanbul Men's High School), the University of Istanbul, and the Reserve Officers Training School in Ankara. While still in high school, he began keeping a diary, which he continued during his college years and the time he spent serving as an army dentist in eastern Turkey. Those diaries, contained in this book, provide rare insights into what life was like for minorities - and particularly for Jews - in Turkey during the nineteen thirties and forties. Atatürk's Republic, which most of them ardently supported, had raised their hopes of at last being accepted as fully equal Turkish citizens in every way, but those hopes were cruelly dashed when discrimination and anti-Semitism continued, and even worsened, especially after Atatürk's death in 1938. Not surprisingly, most of Turkey's Jews immigrated to Israel after it won its independence in 1948. That exodus provoked harsh criticism of the Jews in the Turkish press, and the Turkish Jews founded their own newspapers and magazines to respond to those attacks. Shaul was one of the first contributors to Turkey's fledgling Jewish press, and some of his most important articles are included in this volume. He himself moved to Israel in 1950 but continued to write articles for Turkish Jewish publications throughout his life and also authored a book on the folklore of the Turkish Jews. From Balat to Bat Yam is a testament to Eli Shaul's deeply felt patriotism, which consisted not only of love for his native Turkey but insistence that she treat all her citizens as equals".

SEFER OR ELIMELEKH: LIKUTIM MI-TORAT HA-MAOR HA-GADOL ... RABI ELIMELEKH ... MI-LIZENSK? ... HA-MEFUZARIM BI-SEFARAN SHEL-TSADIKIM VE-ENAM MOFIIM BE-SIFRO HA-K. NOAM ELIMELEKH
(FT) Hardcover, 8vo, 221 pages, 23 cm. In Hebrew. Edition: Mahad. Hadashah ? Im hosafot v? E-tikunim. Series: Sifre Mekhon Zekher Naftali; Variation: Sifre Mekhon Zekher Naftali. SUBJECT(S) : Hasidism. Jewish meditations. Includes bibliographical references on pages 214-221 and indexes. Other Titles: Or Elimelekh. Elimelech of Lyzhansk (1717-1787) was a popular zaddik of the third generation of ? Asidim and one of the founders of Hasidism in Galicia. Elimelech was a disciple of Dov Baer the Maggid of Mezhirech and is considered the theoretician and creator of practical zaddikism. Elimelech and his brother Zusya of Hanipol traveled from village to village, according to the principle of nedudei galut, i. E. , their travels, symbolically expressing their identification with the wanderings of the shekhinah. According to a later interpretation, the purpose of their wanderings was the promotion of repentance. After the death of Dov Baer, Elimelech settled in Lyzhansk, Galicia, which as a result became an important ? Asidic center. He headed a court financed by pidyonot, i. E. , a system of internal taxes paid to the zaddik usually accompanied by kvitlakh, slips on which the Hasidim wrote their spiritual and material problems for the zaddik to solve. Letters published under his name show his attitude toward the quarrels between the Hasidim and the Mitnaggedim. Elimelech is also mentioned in the indictments against the Hasidim in Sefer ha-Vikkuah and in Zemir Arizim. In his letters, he defends himself against the objections of the Mitnaggedim to Hasidim praying according to the Sephardi ritual. Elimelech cited as proof Joseph Caro and even Moses Isserles, who according to him established the Ashkenazi ritual for the general community, but not for the pious who had attained a higher plane of faith. Elimelech was ascetic, but he did not regard asceticism as the way of life for all. According to him, asceticism corresponds to the breaking of the vessels in Lurianic Kabbalah, whose purpose is tikkun. However, it is not the only path to tikkun; for one zaddik reaches tikkun through eating and another, through asceticism (Liebes in EJ, 2007) . OCLC lists 7 copies worldwide. Very good condition. Elina, Odette
SANS FLEURS NI COURONNES
1st edition, original portfolio wrappers, 8vo. 53 pages, plus many blank and unnumbered pages. Illustrations throughout. In French. Title translates as, Without Flowers Nor Crowns. This book is told in the first person, in a succession of scenes, impressions, portraits, thoughts, reflections and emotions that, in chapters very brief and titled, make up a devastating panorama about Elinas experience in Auschwitz. (elcultural.com 2018). "When I returned from Auschwitz in 1945, I felt what I had just experienced with such acuteness that it was impossible for me to keep it to myself. I recorded it in notes and drawings. This constituted Without flowers nor Crowns. I do not regret having written these notes as soon as I returned from camp because, over time, memories become distorted, they become watered down or dramatized, but always move away from the truth. (...)" Odette Elina (1910-1991) was a painter, was deported by the Gestapo to Auschwitz-Birkenau in April 1944 as a communist, but above all and above all because she was Jewish. In 1940, she entered the French Resistance network, she had had an initial function to establish the liaison between the writers residing in the South zone (notably Mauriac, Aragon and Julien Benda) before entering the Secret Army in 1942. We actually know very little about the biographical career of Elina before and after her deportation, apart from her exacerbated desire on leaving the Camp to testify to her life in the Camp. Without Flowers nor Crowns, [was] originally published in 1948 in the wake of the first testimonies
on the Holocaust that appeared in the post-war years..." (Isabelle Dumont). SUBJECT(S): World War, 1939-1945 -- Prisoners and prisons, German. Guerre mondiale (1939-1945) -- Camps de concentration -- Récits personnels. Französin. Elina, Odette. Auschwitz (Concentration camp). Konzentrationslager. OCLC: 58452978 (2005 edition by later publisher, with the OCLC record incorrectly listing the original 1st edition as 1947 instead of 1948). OCLC lists no 1948 (or 1947) copies online. Pages are loose as issued, in an illustrated portfolio. This book is one of 270 numbered copies. Illustrated with 12 inset drawings, one reproduced on the cover; the title page mentions 13 drawings (?), but there are only 12, the same number as reproduced in the 1982 reissue [and also in the other copy of this first edition we examined], so "13" would seem to be incorrect or possibly counting the repeated drawing on the cover. Portfolio is slightly rubbed with short closed tear at lower front inside fold and spine has some creasing, else Very Good Condition. Important and exceedingly rare (HOLO2-141-27-IIIXX)

Elizabeth, Charlotte
JUDAHS LION [THE FIRST ENGLISH-LANGUAGE ZIONIST NOVEL]
Publishers cloth. 16mo. 406 pages. 16 cm. First edition. Added title page, engraved. Singerman 0832. This novel is considered to be the first English language Zionist Novel (it predates George Eliots Daniel Deronda by thirty years) ; the story concerns the return of an English Jew (Alick) to the Holy Land; it binds together English and Jewish history. This was the last novel the author wrote. Charlotte Elizabeth Tonna (1790-1846) wrote on the plight of English factory workers, was well known in her time for her novels and her Orange-Protestant essays and poems, was passionate about gardening, a pioneer of deaf education, and also wrote childrens stories. In her later years she defended the rights of Judaism, and in her last three years was a close friend of Moses Montefiore, owing to her fundraising on behalf of the Jews of Mogador in 1844 (she raised the most money of anyone for the Jewish community in the besieged Moroccan coastal city) , her public protest against the policies of Tsar Nicholas I towards Jews, and her 1844 letter to the Bishop of Jerusalem, entitled Israels Ordinances. As Tonnas health deteriorated rapidly, the Montefiores became devoted friends. When she set out on her final journey to Ramsgate from London, it was Montefiore who bade her farewell at the train station and handed her a basket of grapes. (Pg. 215; Moses Montefiore: Jewish Liberator, Imperial Hero; by Abigail Green) . Her work, "Days of Old, by Charlotte Elizabeth (Mrs. Tonner) was part of the sixth volume published by the American Jewish Publication Society in 1847 (Jewish Miscellany no. VI; which also includes two works by Isaac Leeser, Rachel Levi, A Tale and The Jews and Their Religion) , two years after the society was founded by Isaac Leeser (EJ 1906; American Jewish Publication Society) . Bound in black cloth with gilt title on spine. Subjects: Jews - Fiction. Fiction (English) . OCLC lists 20 copies. The last copy offered at auction was over 30 years ago in 1987. Previous owners inscription on first two endpages, edge wear and light soiling to cloth, very light foxing throughout; overall very clean and fresh. Very good condition. (AMR-39-31-D)xx
