"Gelber [1891-1966] was born in Lvov, Galicia and studied at the universities of Vienna and Berlin. He served in World War I as an officer in the Austro-Hungarian army; thereafter he assumed the post of general secretary of the Eastern Galician delegation of the Va'ad Le'ummi in Vienna and, subsequently, became an active participant in the Austrian Pro-Palestine Committee and first secretary of the Austrian Zionist Organization. In 1934 he immigrated to Palestine where, until his retirement in 1954, he worked in the Keren Hayesod head office in Jerusalem. His last years were devoted to Jewish scholarship, which he had pursued extensively, though not professionally, all his life. Gelber was a prolific author who published close to 1, 000 books and articles in Hebrew, German, Yiddish, and Polish on Jewish history and contemporary Jewish life, in addition to scores of articles on contemporary issues in daily newspapers. Il piccolo figlio di Andrea il conciapelli scompare improvvisamente, nonostante le affannose ricerche dei genitori e delle numerose persone coinvolte non se ne trova traccia. Qualche settimana prima, durante la quaresima, un predicatore francescano aveva tuonato dal pulpito profetando che dagli ebrei sarebbe venuta una sciagura. La lotta contro l'usura era la giustificazione della sua accesa ostilità, ma le storie di ebrei malvagi pronti a compiere sacrilegi o a uccidere bambini erano già radicate nell'immaginario popolare. Non passò molto e iniziò a serpeggiare l'idea che si dovesse indagare nella direzione della piccola comunità ebraica e della sua modesta sinagoga. Giunse però la spontanea denuncia di alcuni maggiorenti della comunità che una sera si recarono a dichiarare di aver rinvenuto il corpo esanime del piccolo nella derivazione di una roggia che attraverso una saracinesca portava direttamente l'acqua del fiume negli scantinati all'interno delle loro case. Nonostante la collaborazione il loro arresto avvenne la sera stessa, con l'esclusione di donne e bambini, confinati nei loro domicili. Inizia così una vicenda processuale drammatica che ha visto finire torturati, uccisi e messi al rogo tutti i maschi della piccola comunità ebraica. Ogni cosa è stata meticolosamente registrata negli atti che ancora oggi parlano con dovizia di particolari della tragedia.
