8vo. Xxxiii, 749 pages. Complete in two volumes. First edition. SUBJECT(S): Responsa; Responsa 1040-1600; Jews Germany; Meir ben Baruch, of Rothenberg, ca. 1215-1293. Agus was born in Swislocz, Poland, and studied at the Hebrew University in Jerusalem (192627) , and at Dropsie College (1937) . He served as educational director in Memphis, Tenn. (193945) , dean of the Harry Fischel Research School in Talmud (Jerusalem, 194749) , and principal of the Akiba Academy in Philadelphia (194951) . From 1951 he was professor of Jewish history at Yeshiva University. Using responsa literature as a primary historical source, Agus wrote extensively on Jewish life in the Middle Ages. Among his works are Rabbi Meir of Rothenburg (2 vols. , 1947) , describing Jewish life in 13th-century Germany, and Teshuvot Ba'alei ha-Tosafot, an edition of previously unpublished responsa by the Tosafists (1954) . His later writings concentrated on Jewish communal life in pre-Crusade Europe, showing that the Franco-German Jews, though a small group, were able to preserve talmudic traditions by their great devotion to study and observance of Judaism. Germinario Francesco

The Myth of Jewish Communism: A Historical Interpretation: 16
8vo, br. ed. 220pp. Jewish Communism' was one of the most powerful and destructive political myths in 20th-century Europe. The cry of Jewish communist conspiracy turned traditional, often religiously inspired anti-Jewish sentiments into a murderous anti-Semitic rampage. The connection of Jews with communism has always been an extremely sensitive issue, which cannot simply be dismissed as a fully irrational phenomenon. Jews were disproportionately present in the revolutionary movement. This does not make the myth of Jewish Communism less mythical, but it does imply that real interests and conflicts were involved. This book presents the first full-length analysis of the identification of Jews with communism. It traces the myth of Jewish Communism from the traditional anti-Jewish prejudices on which it is built, to its crucial role in Eastern European Stalinist and post-Stalinist politics. It documents the painful controversies that the participation of Jews in the revolutionary movement has generated among Jewish observers, among communists, and also among historians. The Author : André Gerrits is Associate Professor in East European Studies at the University of Amsterdam, where he holds the Jean Monnet Chair in European Integration, and Senior Research Fellow at the Netherlands Institute of International Relations (Clingendael).

Gershuni, Grigorii Andreevich [Grigori Gershuni]
MAYN ENTRINUNG FUN KATORGA
1st Edition, Original Printed Paper Wrappers, 54 pages. Includes portrait of the author; 19 cm. Grigory Andreyevich Gershuni (18701908) was born in Kaunas, in the Kovno Governorate of the Russian Empire (present-day Lithuania) , to a petty bourgeois family of Lithuanian Jews
. In 1898, his parents were killed in a pogrom
. Gershuni was a socialist and a founding member of the Workers' Party for the Political Liberation of Russia. This led to his arrest in 1900 by the Okhrana (secret police. After his release he joined with fellow revolutionaries including Catherine Breshkovsky, Victor Chernov, Alexander Kerensky and Yevno Azef to establish the Socialist-Revolutionary Party in 1901. Gershuni also founded the SR Combat Organization in 1902, which planned and executed the assassination of Dmitry Sipyagin, the Minister of Interior, in April 1902 and of N. M. Bogdanovich, the Governor of Ufa, in May 1903. They failed to assassinate Prince Ivan Mikhailovich Obolensky, the Governor of Kharkov, in July 1902. Gershuni was unaware that Yevno Azef, his deputy, was working as an Okhrana spy. In May 1903, Gershuni was arrested in Kiev. In February 1904, Gershuni was tried by a military court in Saint Petersburg and received a death sentence, which later was reduced to life imprisonment at a hard labour camp by Tsar Nicholas II of Russia. In 1906, he hid in a barrel of sauerkraut and escaped from the Akatuy katorga to China. From China he traveled to Japan and the United States, giving speeches from San Francisco to New York City in support of the socialist-revolutionary causes. In Chicago he met Jane Addams. He returned to Europe in February 1907 in time for the Second Extraordinary Party conference of the Socialist-Revolutionary Party. There he continued to argue for a campaign of terror to overthrow the Tsarist Empire in Russia (Wikipedia) . SUBJECT(S) : Political prisoners -- Russia (Federation) -- Siberia -- Biography. Gerson Rosenzweig
SHIRIM, MESHALIM U-MIKHTAMIM
(FT) New York: S. Levine, 1893. Only edition. 70, [4] pages, 178: 118 mm. , wide margins, usual light age staining, library stamps. Subject(s) : 19th Century Poetry. Gerson Rosenzweig (1861-1914) , was born in Lithuania, he taught Hebrew in Bialystok, and in 1888 he emigrated to the United States. Rosenzweig edited several Hebrew periodicals - Ha-Ivri (1891-1902) , Kadimah (1899-1902) , Ha-Devorah (1911-12) - they were short-lived and earned him neither fame nor a livelihood. He also edited Hebrew columns in the Yiddish press. Though he was a versifier rather than a poet, he had a genuine flair for satire and he was known to his contemporaries as the "sweet satirist of Israel" and as a parodist he earned an honorable place in Hebrew literature. His Talmud Yanka'i ("Yankee Talmud, " 1907, 1909) poured a stream of ill-humored sarcasm on the peddler, the teacher, the rabbi. The pages of that collection of satires resembled the pages of the Talmud: the text in large letters, wreathed by commentary in Rashi script, is divided into six tractates instead of the talmudic six orders. Rosenzweig also denounced the vulgarisms of the country, the worship of money, the religion of success. Epigrammatic neatness was his forte. Example: "What is the difference between a convert and an anarchist? A convert denies what he believes, an anarchist believes what he denies. " Using a biblical phrase he quipped sardonically about his impending death by cancer of the tongue: "Life and death are at the mercy of the tongue" (Prov. 18: 21) . He published two books of epigrams: Shirim, Meshalim u-Mikhtamim (1893) and Hamishah ve-Elef Mikhtamim (1903; reprinted in Russia) . OCLC lists 21 copies. A very good copy loose in later boards, rubbed. (AMR36-25)

In 1898, Max Grunwald (18711953) , a rabbi living in Hamburg and then Vienna, established the Gesellschaft für Jüdische Volkskunde, Mitteilungen (der Gesellschaft) für Jüdische Volkskunde (18981929) and Museum für Jüdische Volkskunde, having issued a call to collect materials and a questionnaire in 1896. Grunwald hoped that Jewish Volkskunde would preserve a record of a disappearing way of life and, by demonstrating the beauty of traditions and encouraging their revival, help stem the tide of assimilation; he also hoped that by showing the connectedness of Jews to other peoples and their universal values, Jewish Volkskunde might counteract anthropological characterizations of Jews as an immutable and degenerate race.
