MARIO PRASSINOS, (1916-1985).
Mario Prassinos. In pursuit of an artist: Istanbul - Paris - Istanbul.= Mario Prassinos. Bir sanatçinin izinde: Istanbul - Paris - Istanbul. Curated by Begüm Akkoyunlu Ersöz, Tania Bahar.
New English Paperback. Pbo. 4to. (28 x 24 cm). In English and Turkish. 112 p., color and b/w ills. Mario Prassinos. In pursuit of an artist: Istanbul - Paris - Istanbul.= Mario Prassinos. Bir sanatçinin izinde: Istanbul - Paris - Istanbul. Curated by Begüm Akkoyunlu Ersöz, Tania Bahar. The exhibition Mario Prassinos, In Pursuit of an Artist: Istanbul-Paris-Istanbul is centered on the art of Mario Prassinos, born into a Greek family of artists in Istanbul, whose artistic career began among the 20th-century Avant-Gardes in Paris. Curated by Seza Sinanlar Uslu with specialists Catherine Prassinos and Thierry Rye as consultants, the exhibition is accompanied by an exhaustive catalogue. Featuring a range of original and striking works by Mario Prassinos, including paintings, book illustrations, fabric samples, and engravings, the catalogue also contains articles written by the artist's daughter Catherine Prassinos, Enis Batur, and Seza Sinanlar Uslu. Catherine Prassinos focuses on her father's relationship with Istanbul and his memories of the city, whereas Enis Batur seeks, in the artist's works, the traces of the childhood he spent in Istanbul and the art milieu he was a part of during his years in France. Carefully examining the unique and outstanding personality of Prassinos, his style that extends from Surrealism to Realism, and his artistic stance against Fascism during World War II, Uslu particularly concentrates on the relationship the artist establishes with memory: "People do not recognize things (or other people), they remember them" says Prassinos, who reflects traces of the past from memory in his works. He presents to viewers the memories he recorded in memory, but could not access or recall exactly and clearly, as portraits that, in his words, could only be "created by a damaged memory.". This exhibition is centered on the art of Mario Prassinos, who was born in Istanbul into a Greek-Ottoman family and began his artistic career in Paris, among the 20th century avant-gardes. Bringing together a large selection of his works ranging from paintings and book illustrations to tapestries, portraits, and engravings, the exhibition reveals the striking and unique character of Prassinos and his distinctive style shifting from Surrealism to a more realistic approach. Curated by Seza Sinanlar Uslu, the exhibition welcomes back this original 20th-century artist to his birthplace to Pera, Istanbul, on the 100th anniversary of his birth. Mario Prassinos was born in Istanbul in 1916 to a Greek-Italian family that settled in Turkey many years before. In 1922, his family moved to France. He studied at the School of Oriental Languages and the Sorbonne. His first solo exhibition was held in 1938 at the Billiet-Vorms Gallery. Upon his return from the war in which he had fought as a volunteer, he broke away from surrealism and started a figurative period.

Markel Howard
Quarantine!: East European Jewish Immigrants and the New York City Epidemics of 1892
8vo, hardcover in dj, 262pp. In Quarantine! Howard Markel traces the course of the typhus and cholera epidemics that swept through New York City in 1892. The story is told from the point of view of those involved?the public health doctors who diagnosed and treated the victims, the newspaper reporters who covered the stories, the government officials who established and enforced policy, and, most importantly, the immigrants themselves. Drawing on rarely cited stories from the Yiddish American press, immigrant diaries and letters, and official accounts, Markel follows the immigrants on their journey from a squalid and precarious existence in Russia's Pale of Settlement, to their passage in steerage, to New York's Lower East Side, to the city's quarantine islands. At a time of renewed anti-immigrant sentiment and newly emerging infectious diseases, Quarantine! provides a historical context for considering some of the significant problems that face American society today.

Markish, Peretz [Perets].
PYESN [VOL VI OF GEZAMELTE VERK]
1st Edition. Original printed cloth, Small 8vo, 283 pages; 20 cm. In Yiddish. Title translates as, "Plays." SUBJECT(S): Yiddish drama. Peretz Davidovich Markish (1895-1952) was a Soviet/Russian Jewish poet and playwright who wrote predominantly in Yiddish.... His first poetry collection, Shveln ('Thresholds'), published in Kiev in 1919, established his reputation
.In the early 1920s, he was a member of the Kiev group of Yiddish poets that included David Hofstein and Leib Kvitko. After a series of pogroms took place in Ukraine, he moved to Warsaw and in Western Europe.
.In 1924 he was a co-founder and editor of the Literarishe bleter in Warsaw. In 1926, Markish returned to the Soviet Union. There he published a number of optimistic poems glorifying the communist regime, including Mayn dor ('My Generation'; 1927) and the epic Brider ('Brothers'; 1929). His novel Dor oys, dor ayn ('Generation After Generation'; 1929), about the genesis of revolution in a small Jewish town, was condemned for 'Jewish chauvinism.' As a co-founder of the Soviet School of Writers he was awarded the Order of Lenin in 1939. Markish joined the Soviet Communist party in early 1942 when he took a job at the International Division of Sovietinformburo, while a colleague Teumin was the press agent. The bureau head Lozovsky banned them from any further contact with JAC; effectively cutting them off from the international socialist element altogether. The monitors started looking through their post, investigating the articles they wrote. In April 1942, Stalin had ordered the formation of the Jewish Anti-Fascist Committee designed to influence international public opinion and organize political and material support for the Soviet fight against Nazi Germany, particularly from the West
.In 1946, he was awarded the Stalin Prize, and wrote several paeans to Joseph Stalin, including a 20,000-line epic poem Milkhome (War) in 1948. However, Stalin soon changed policy towards the liquidation of the Jewish Anti-Fascist Committee and against the remnants of official Jewish cultural activity in the Soviet Union
..Markish was accused of being a Jewish nationalist, and arrested in January 1949, and shot with other Jewish writers during the Night of the Murdered Poets in August 1952. After Stalin's death, Markish's widow Esther and his sons, literary scholar Shimon Markish and prose writer David Markish, actively set out to redeem his memory" (Wikipedia). OCLC: 19304548. OCLC lists 6 copies worldwide (NYPL, YIVO, Harvard, UT-Austin, UCL, NYBC) with no listings for the complete Gezamelte Verk set anywhere. Light staining and wear to boards and spine, unobtrusive pen marks to half title and blank end page, bookplate, some foxing. About Very Good- Condition.
