‎Gruen, Erich S.‎

‎HERITAGE AND HELLENISM The Reinvention of Jewish Traditon‎

‎Very light shelfwear to book and DJ else fine. ; The interaction of Jew and Greek in antiquity intrigues the imagination. Both civilizations boasted great traditions, their roots stretching back to legendary ancestors and divine sanction. In the wake of Alexander the Great's triumphant successes, Greeks and Macedonians came as conquerors and settled as ruling classes in the lands of the eastern Mediterranean. Hellenic culture, the culture of the ascendant classes in many of the cities of the Near East, held widespread attraction and appeal. Jews were certainly not immune. In this thoroughly researched, lucidly written work, Erich Gruen draws on a wide variety of literary and historical texts of the period to explore a central question: How did the Jews accommodate themselves to the larger cultural world of the Mediterranean while at the same time reasserting the character of their own heritage within it? Erich Gruen's work highlights Jewish creativity, ingenuity, and inventiveness, as the Jews engaged actively with the traditions of Hellas, adapting genres and transforming legends to articulate their own legacy in modes congenial to a Hellenistic setting. Drawing on a diverse array of texts composed in Greek by Jews over a broad period of time, Gruen explores works by Jewish historians, epic poets, tragic dramatists, writers of romance and novels, exegetes, philosophers, apocalyptic visionaries, and composers of fanciful fables—not to mention pseudonymous forgers and fabricators. In these works, Jewish writers reinvented their own past, offering us the best insights into Jewish self-perception in that era. ; 335 pages‎

‎JEWS IN AGRICULTURE: AN ORGANIZED FARM MOVEMENT AS A CONSTRUCTIVE PROGRAM FOR AMERICAN JEWRY‎

‎1st Separate Edition. 6 X 13 Inches : Text Front and Back, accompanied by a photo of Gruen. “Reprinted from ‘The American Hebrew, ’ November 1, 1940.” By the 1930s, significantly-sized Jewish communities had grown up around farming towns like Farmingdale, New Jersey. The farmers built synagogues and community centers, held religious services, and celebrated Jewish holidays together. During the Depression, they raised money to help those in need, and during the years of World War II, they collected money, knitted, and sent care packages to Jews overseas. They also absorbed some of the Displaced Persons who arrived in the U. S. And were willing to work on farms. Indeed, some of these D. P. S even established their own farms, with the help of the Jewish Agricultural Society. Oscar Gruen was himself a recently arrived European refugee and was the Associate Publisher and Editor of the American Hebrew at the time of this article’s publication. Gruen (1890-1953) was also the founding editor of the first Jewish news bureau, the Juedische Pressezentrale, which published a weekly edition in Zurich from 1917 to 1940. Grün began the Pressezentrale in the wake of World War I in order to counteract what he saw as international agitation against Jews. In 1919, Grün was a member of the committee which, under the leadership of Louis Marshall, presented the Jewish case to the Paris Peace Conference and secured the inclusion of the "minority rights clause" in the various constitutions of the newly established states in Central Europe. As editor of one of the world’s leading Jewish periodicals, Grün witnessed firsthand many of the most important Jewish-related events of the time, including the 20th Zionist Congress (1937) and the Evian Conference (1938) . OCLC lists no copies worldwide. Slight wear and toning. About very good condition. (AMR-52-32)xx‎

‎OUTLINES OF A DEVELOPMENT PLAN FOR JEWISH PALESTINE‎

‎Original paper wrappers. 4to. Xvi, 171 pages; 24 cm. Divided into five parts with smaller chapter divisions within each. Includes various tables. “The reader is warned at the outset not to mistake such an attempt as either a ‘blueprint’, or a ‘forecast’ of what is likely to happen. As these lines are written (beginning of 1946) , the political and economic future of the country is no less uncertain than it was in 1942, when the work was taken in hand. But then, as now, the investigation is justified, in the author’s opinion, just because no mere prophesy has any practical value. Its task is to show what might be done in Palestine and in this way to establish the reasonableness of the Zionist claims for conditions under which the realisation of their aims can be achieved. It is intended to help towards the creation of preconditions favourable to our cause, and is, in so far, not dependent upon the actual situation at present or in future. ” SUBJECT(S) : Economic policy, Palestine. Minimal edgewear and staining. Slight toning. Very good condition. (ZION-12-70)‎

‎First edition. Original tan boards. 8vo. 618, 480 pages; 23.5 cm. Three volumes, bound in 2, Volume 25 (1923) and the combined Volumes 26 and 27 (1925) . Written in German with some Arabic, French, Hebrew, and Italian. Title translates to "Yearbook for Jewish Folklore. " An annual publication that followed the periodical series "Mitteilungen zur Jüdischen Volkskunde" by the same editor. "In 1898, Max Grunwald (1871–1953) , a rabbi living in Hamburg and then Vienna, established the Gesellschaft für Jüdische Volkskunde, Mitteilungen (der Gesellschaft) für Jüdische Volkskunde (1898–1929) and Museum für Jüdische Volkskunde, having issued a call to collect materials and a questionnaire in 1896. Grunwald hoped that Jewish Volkskunde would preserve a record of a disappearing way of life and, by demonstrating the beauty of traditions and encouraging their revival, help stem the tide of assimilation; he also hoped that by showing the connectedness of Jews to other peoples and their universal values, Jewish Volkskunde might counteract anthropological characterizations of Jews as an immutable and degenerate race" (YIVO encyclopedia 2010) . ‎Samuel Oppenheimer Und Sein Kreis (Ein Kapitel Aus Der Finanzgeschichte Österreichs)‎

‎Softbound. 8vo. XII, 358 [1] pages. 24 cm. First edition. In German. Includes one fold out chart. Title translates as: “Samuel Oppenheimer and his circle (a chapter in the history of finance in Austria) ” printed in the series Sources and Research on the History of Jews in German-Austria under the auspices of the “Historische Kommission der Israelitischen Kultusgemeinde in Wien. ” This volume, a biography on the 17th century Jewish Viennese Banker and court diplomat Samuel Oppenheimer, was the “Rappaport Foundation Prize-winning script. ” Max Grunwald (1871–1953) was a rabbi, historian, and folklorist. “Born at Hindenburg (now Zabrze, Silesia) , Grunwald served as rabbi in Hamburg (1895–1903) and Vienna (1905–35) . He settled in Jerusalem in 1938. Grunwald was a many-sided and productive scholar. He wrote on the history of the communities which he served (Hamburgs deutsche Juden–1811, 1904; Portugiesengraeber auf deutscher Erde; Juden als Reeder und Seefahrer, 1902; and on Vienna: Geschichte der Juden in Wien (for schools, 1926) ; Wiener Hevra Kaddisha, 1910; Vienna, 1936 (in the Jewish Communities series of the Jewish Publication Society of America) ) . Grunwald also wrote on such famous Viennese Jews as S. Oppenheimer (Samuel Oppenheimer und sein Kreis, 1913) and S. Wertheimer and his descendants (in: Juedische Familienforschung, 1926) . Of more general historical interest is his anthology of the accounts of Jewish participants in Napoleon's campaigns (Die Feldzuege Napoleons…, 1913) . Grunwald's main interest, however, was Jewish folklore, and his contribution in this field is of lasting importance. In 1897 he founded the Gesellschaft fuer juedische Volkskunde and edited and largely wrote its organ, the Mitteillungen (1897–1922) , which was succeeded by the Jahrbuecher fuer juedische Volkskunde (1923–25) . ” (From the 2007 Encyclopedia Judaica) Subjects: Finance -- Austria -- History. Jews -- Austria. Oppenheimer, Samuel, 1630-1703. Covers lightly aged and soiled, with lightly chipped edges. Backstrip lightly chipped at top. Last page earmarked. Pages crisp and clean. Grunwald hoped that Jewish Volkskunde would preserve a record of a disappearing way of life and, by demonstrating the beauty of traditions and encouraging their revival, help stem the tide of assimilation; he also hoped that by showing the connectedness of Jews to other peoples and their universal values, Jewish Volkskunde might counteract anthropological characterizations of Jews as an immutable and degenerate race” (YIVO encyclopedia 2010) .
