(Civil War) Mayer, Nathan
A POEM READ BY SURGEON NATHAN MAYER, OCTOBER 11, 1894, AT THE DEDICATION OF A MONUMENT BY THE SIXTEENTH CONNECTICUT WHERE THEY FOUGHT AT ANTIETAM, SEPTEMBER 17, 1862
1st edition. Original Blue and White Boards. 13 leaves plates ; 22 cm. In English. This is a poem about the Battle of Antietam written by a Jewish Union surgeon who served in the battle, and throughout the civil war. Mayer wrote the poem for the dedication of a monument established for his 16th Connecticut regiment. Although Jews had not been allowed to serve in the military throughout most of European history, they had played a role in the defense of their communities in North America since the 1600s
Dr. Nathan Mayer joined the army as an assistant surgeon in a Connecticut regiment of volunteers. He soon became a full surgeon and served at many of the most important battles of the war. At Antietam, he used a farmhouse as a field hospital where he had some success using chloroform, an early anesthetic. The battle of Antietam was the bloodiest single-day battle in America History. In the poem, Mayer writes, To all who in this holy strife/Went forward with their sweet young life/Prepared to give. And let it show/Set high in noondays golden glow/Upon this verdant field of blood/That life is not the highest good/but higher, holier, sweeter far/Are lifes ideals. Like a star
Mayer was later captured with his regiment and held by confederate troops for seven months. (History of the Jews in America: Civil War Through the Rise of Zionism, Volume 2, by Shelley Kapnek Rosenberg, 2005) OCLC lists 19 copies worldwide. Includes period photographs of the monument and of Mayer. Full page inscription about the history of Mayers long military career written on the first inside page by Nathan M. Stern, a Jewish sergeant in the Spanish American War. Institutional Stamp. Cover is lightly worn. Inside pages are in very good condition. (AMR-48-23-D)

(First Bloch-Leeser Bible) Leeser, Isaac
THE TWENTY-FOUR BOOKS OF THE HOLY SCRIPTURES, CAREFULLY TRANSLATED ACCORDING TO THE MASSORETIC TEXT, AFTER THE BEST JEWISH AUTHORITIES. TORAH, NEVI'IM VE-KHETUVIM.
Original Full Leather, 16mo, [6], iii-xii, 1243 pages. 17 cm. Title in Hebrew at head of title. The scarce Chicago Bloch edition, retaining the copyright page date of 1853, but probably published in the late 1860s given the inclusion of the Advertisement to the London Edition" (which appeared in 1865, with 7 holdings in OCLC,) and its mid-19th Century calf binding. Blochs first office in Chicago dates to the 1870s, and Bloch did also publish an 1884 edition, but, unlike our copy, it lists the 1884 date and only Cincinnati (not Chicago, as this copy does) and contains 1236 pages (not 1243 as ours does). A Bloch publication of Leesers bible could almost certainly not have occurred before Leesers death in 1868, given the enmity between the Leader of American Orthodoxy and the Reform-oriented publishing house owned by Isaac M. Wise brother-in-law, Edward Bloch. Leeser, famously, had printed an anonymous attack on Wise signed Lawyers in the pages of his Occident shortly after the appearance of Minhag Amerika in 1857; this anti-Reform rejoinder singled out Bloch & Co. for allegedly keeping its store open on the Jewish Sabbath and closing it on Sunday, the Christian Sabbath (Singerman). In our Bloch copy, the copyright is still held by Isaac Leeser; It was not until 1888 that his [Blochs] firm obtained the copyright of this popular and frequently reprinted landmark text. OCLC lists only 2 holdings of the Chicago Bloch [1853] edition (Andrews University in Michigan and the Community of Christ library in Missouri), both in the Midwest, perhaps reflecting Blochs still-Midwestern orientation at the time. Indeed, not many years later, Bloch left Chicago completely and moved its second headquarters to New York. This edition not listed in Singerman nor in Goldman. Edgewear to leather boards and many pages. Spine professionally rebacked. Good Condition thus. (AMR-38-23)

(Hamburg) Grunwald, Max
Mitteilungen Der Gesellschaft Für Jüdischen Volkskunde (Book 7; 1903; Number 2)
Serial Publication. 8vo. 124 pages. 23 cm. First edition. In German. Bound in cloth and decorative boards. Title translates as: Bulletin of the Society for Jewish Folklore. This specific issue of the journal solely contains Grunwalds famous essay on Hamburgs Jewish Community from its inception until 1811: In 1811, Hamburg being incorporated in the French empire, the Jews of that town were forced by an order of Napoleon to withdraw from the congregation of the Three Communities, and to form of the three Hamburg congregations a new community. The constitution of this new community was established in the following year. At the same time the old restrictions were abolished, and full equality before the law was given to the Hamburg Jews, as to all the Jews in the French empire. (1906 Jewish Encyclopedia) The Bulletin was established to publish the innovative work of Jewish folklorists working at the Hamburg Jewish Museum; its publishing run was from 1898 to 1929, though the publication name of the journal changed in 1923 and again in 1926, to that of Mitteilungen zur jüdischen Volkskunde and Jahrbuch für jüdische Volkskunde respectively. Max Grunwald (18711953) , editor of "Mittheilungen der Gesellschaft für Jüdische Volkskunde, " which society was founded by him in 1897 and of which he is president (1903) . (1906 Jewish Encyclopedia) Grunwald was a rabbi, historian, and folklorist. Born at Hindenburg (now Zabrze, Silesia) , Grunwald served as rabbi in Hamburg (18951903) and Vienna (190535) . He settled in Jerusalem in 1938. Grunwald was a many-sided and productive scholar. He wrote on the history of the communities which he served.
Grunwald's main interest, however, was Jewish folklore, and his contribution in this field is of lasting importance. In 1897 he founded the Gesellschaft fuer juedische Volkskunde and edited and largely wrote its organ, the Mitteillungen (18971922) , which was succeeded by the Jahrbuecher fuer juedische Volkskunde (192325) . In this area he contributed also to other periodicals as well as to a number of Festschriften and published important studies such as Hebraeische Frauennamen (1894 ) , Eigennamen des alten Testaments (1895) , and in the related field of Jewish art Holzsynagogen in Polen (with others, 1934) . Among Grunwald's other interests were Spinoza, on whom he had written his dissertation (1892) and a prizewinning Spinoza in Deutschland (1897) . On the occasion of the international exhibition on hygiene in Dresden in 1911 he published a book on that subject, Hygiene der Juden (1912) . He also edited a German prayer book for women and one for serving soldiers (Gebetbuch fuer israelitische Soldaten im Kriege, 1914) . On the occasion of Grunwald's 70th birthday Omanut, the publication of the Bezalel Museum in Jerusalem, issued his bibliography (1941) . " Eretz Israel, Facts and Figures, published by the Head Offices of Keren Hayesod and Keren Kayemeth Leisrael, Jerusalem, 5698 (1937/38) ; distributed by the United Palestine Appeal, New York City. $4, 500, 000 in 1938 is the goal of United Palestine Appeal - p. Illustrated brochure by the United Palestine Appeal detailing the cultural and material progress, immigration statistics and demographics, agricultural and industrial developement, development of Haifa, Tel Aviv, Jerusalem, J. N. F. Land, etc. Each page contains graphs, maps, charts, or other illustrations to depict the figures. Otte Wallish (19031977) was an emigre to Israel who established himself as a graphic designer and contributed to the symbolic self-representation of the Jewish state
. In 1936, Wallish set up a design studio in a building in Nahalat Binyamin, Tel Aviv, that had been chosen as a national landmark. His design studio doubled as a kind of front for SHA'I, the Haganah's secret service
. Wallish was responsible for the calligraphy and design of the scroll for Israel's Declaration of Independence.
In addition, Walisch handled the preparation of the exhibit hall in which the State's Independence was announced.
In 1948, too, Wallish took the lead in designing Israel's first postage stamps. He chose a design based on ancient coins, found in archaeological research on the First Jewish-Roman War and the Bar Kochba Revolt
. Wallish continued to be a leading designer of Israeli stamps
. Israel's first coins were designed from a proposal submitted by Israel Numismatic Society proposal, put together with Leo Kadman, Hanan Pavel, and Wallish. He also designed paper currency for Israel
. Over the years, Wallish also designed posters. For instance, one poster shows the Jewish immigration by ship and another promotes the ZIM shipping line. His posters have been featured in exhibition and the 1997 Selling Zionism exhibit at the Israel Museum. In 2006, a Wallish poster was shown at The New Hebrews: 100 Years of Art in Israel exhibit, Martin-Gropius-Bau in Berlin
