‎RABI MEIR U-VERURIYAH : DERAMAH BAT HAMESH `ALILOT.‎

‎(FT) 8vo. 128 pages. In Hebrew. SUBJECT(S) : Meir, 2nd cent. -- drama; Berubiah, 2nd cent. -- drama. Cahan (1881-1960) was a Hebrew poet and Zionist. Devoted to the revival of the Hebrew language and culture, he coined the term "New Hebrew, " referring to a desired, beautiful, post-Diaspora culture. For him the Jewish Diaspora was everything hated and ugly. "Cahan's poetry revolves around two axes - messianism and the fusion of three major principles: beauty, holiness, and happiness. The messianic motif runs through most of his lyrical epics, verse dramas, and dramatized legends. It goes hand in hand with his identification of the Judaic-prophetic sanctity of life and the yearning for enlightened beauty and universal humanism, or with the identification of morality and the quest for happiness. " (EJ, 2007) Spine faded, otherwise very good condition. (HebLit-6-4)‎

‎1st edition. Hardcover, 1 leaf, 350 pages, 8vo, 21 cm. In Hebrew. SUBJECT (S) : Jews -- Georgia (Republic) . Edited by Abraham Elijah Harkavy. Chorny (1835-1880) was "a traveler and ethnographer, born in Minsk. While a young man, Chorny settled in the Caucasus, where he became interested in the religious life and customs of the Mountain Jews and of the communities of Georgia, Bukhara, and Persia. He subsequently published articles in the Jewish and Russian press in Russia and in Western Europe describing their mode of life, their difficult economic and social situation, and low cultural level. Chorny approached S. D. Luzzatto, Adolphe Cremieux , and other leading Jews about the problem. In 1864, with the help of the Society for the Promotion of Culture among the Jews in Russia, Chorny obtained letters of recommendation from the governor of the Caucasus, Grand Prince Michael, to the local authorities and traveled throughout the Caucasian Mountains and Georgia for over ten years. At the end of 1879 he went to Odessa. The Society published part of his findings posthumously as Sefer ha-Massa'ot ("Book of Travels") . It is important for its ethnographical description of the Mountain Jews and Georgian communities in the 19th century. Many of Chorny's writings survive in manuscript form" (Slutsky in EJ, 2007) . OCLC lists 8 copies worldwide. Slight browning to edges of pages. Few stained pages. Bumped corners. Wear to cover binding. Otherwise, very good condition. ‎ISBN: 9654560224 9789654560221. Cloth, 8vo, 87, 362, xvi pages, plus [12] pages of plates (facimiles of genizah fragments) 29 cm. In Hebrew. Title page and introduction also in English. Includes bibliographical references and indexes. This very-well received work elicited many reviews in the Jewish Studies press; see Steven Fine: “Review of Neil Danzig, A Catalog of Fragments …” in Hebrew Studies, vol. 41 (2000); as well as Ezra Chwat, “Danzig’s Catalog of Halakhah and Midrash Fragments in the E.N. Adler Collection and its Usage as a Research Tool,” in Jewish Quarterly Review 90, 3-4 (2000): 405-415. The book also received this praise from Heidi G. Lerner & Seth Jerchower in their “The Penn/Cambridge Genizah Fragment Project: Issues in Description, Access, and Reunification” (Philadelphia, 2006): "Danzig’s 1997 catalog of Rabbinic fragments at the Library of the Jewish Theological Seminary of America, while oriented upon the holdings of one local collection, exhaustively provides cross-matches and concordances. " The Cairo Geniza is a collection of almost 280,000 Jewish manuscript fragments found in the Genizah or storeroom of the Ben Ezra Synagogue in Fustat, presently Old Cairo, Egypt. Some additional fragments were found in the Basatin cemetery east of Old Cairo, and the collection includes a number of old documents bought in Cairo in the later 19th century. It is presently dispersed among a number of libraries, including the libraries of Cambridge University and the University of Manchester…. In 1896, English travelers Agnes S. Lewis and Margaret D. Gibson returned from Egypt with fragments from the genizah they considered to be of interest, and showed them to Solomon Schechter at Cambridge. Schechter, already aware of the Genizah but not of its significance, immediately recognized the importance of the material. He later went to Egypt, acquired many documents, and brought the contents of the Genizah to scholarly and popular attention….The Taylor-Schechter collection at Cambridge has nearly 193,000 fragments (137,000 shelf-marks); there are a further 31,000 fragments at the Jewish Theological Seminary of America. Also, the John Rylands University Library in Manchester holds a collection of over 11,000 fragments…” (Wikipedia, 2011). SUBJECT(S): Cairo Genizah -- Catalogs. ‎(Jt) Dapiera, Solomon Ben Meshullam, Simon Bernstein‎

‎DIVAN‎

‎(FT) Hardcover, 8vo, 132 pages. 24 cm. In Hebrew. Edition: Hotsa? Ah hadashah ve-metukenet. Dapiera was a “Neo-Hebraic poet of North Spain; died after 1417. He was a relative of Meshullam ben Solomon Dapiera, who flourished, probably in southern France, in the earlier part of the thirteenth century, and who, in several extensive poems, declared against the "Moreh Nebukim" of Maimonides. Before the troubles which came upon him and the Jews in Spain generally, Dapiera seems to have been rich, and charitable to the needy. Forced to leave his native place, he took refuge in Saragossa at the house of Benveniste ben Labi, the Mæcenas of Hebrew scholars, where he became tutor to Benveniste's two sons, with one of whom, Don Vidal Joseph ibn Labi, he exchanged many letters and poems. Through the recommendation of his host, to whom he was not related, as Grätz avers, he became a favorite with Don Meïr Alguadez” (Gottheil & Kayserling in EJ, 1901) . ‎Hardcover, 8vo, xxiv, 224 pages, 21 cm. In German. SUBJECT (S) : Hebrew poetry -- History and criticism. Includes bibliographical references. Delitzsch (1813–1890) , was a “German Protestant theologian, Bible and Judaica scholar. Inspired by Julius Fuerst to devote himself to the study of Judaism, he was appointed professor of theology at the university of his native Leipzig in 1844. Later he taught at Rostock, Erlangen, and again in Leipzig. Though Delitzsch was a devoted Christian and the most significant figure of the Lutheran “Mission to the Jews, ” believing in the supremacy of the New Testament over the Old, he maintained an extraordinary understanding of, and affection for, Judaism. Well versed in Hebrew and in Semitic languages, as well as in the Talmud and in medieval Jewish literature, Delitzsch was in close touch with the leading Jewish scholars of his time. As a devout Christian, he proselytized among the Jews, wrote several pamphlets for that purpose, and made a new translation of the New Testament into Hebrew (1877, 190112; supposedly with the assistance of A. H. Weiss) ” (Breuer in EJ 2007) . Front cover detached. Bookplate of previous owner inside front cover. Otherwise very good condition. (Heb-15-1B)‎

‎NEGINOT SEFAT TSIYON: YESHANOT VA-HADASHOT‎

‎Later Cloth. 8vo. 64 pages. 24 cm. First edition. Neginoth sefath Zion, poems. The last collection of Hebrew poems published by Menahem Mendel Dolitzky in America. Goldman 428. M. M. Dolitzky (1856–1931) , “Hebrew poet and novelist. Born in Bialystok, Menahem Mendel Dolitzki received a traditional education. At an early age, he was attracted to the Haskalah, and in 1875–1876 he traveled to Vienna. There Dolitzki became acquainted with Perets Smolenskin, editor of the Hebrew periodical Ha-Shahar. In 1878, Smolenskin printed Dolitzki’s long narrative poem, Likui shene ha-me’orot, o shene tsadikim she-hiblu zeh ba-zeh (The Eclipse of Two Lights, or the Two Righteous Men Who Injured Each Other) , a satire mocking two rabbis for their antagonism. After his business initiatives failed, Dolitzki worked as a teacher in Bialystok. He continued to publish pieces in Ha-Shahar, Keneset Yisra’el, and Ha-Melits, and established his reputation as a Hebrew author. He was warmly welcomed by Yehudah Leib Gordon in Saint Petersburg in 1881–1882. In 1882, Dolitzki settled in Moscow, where he served for a time as secretary to Kalonymus Wissotzky and worked as a private tutor. Dolitzki witnessed the pogroms of the early 1880s and wrote about them in 'Be-Tokh leva’im' (Among Lions; 1884) and 'Mi-Bayit umi-huts' (From Within and Without; 1890–1891) . Dealing with the question of the right of Jews to settle outside the Pale of Settlement (an acute and painful issue in those days) , the stories are poignant antigovernment satires, exposing the dreary conditions experienced by Diaspora Jews and of Jews who betray their people and benefit. Dolitzki’s poems, by no means artistic masterpieces, made a strong impression as well, and were generally popular. … In the United States, Dolitzki struggled, working as a teacher and a peddler, remaining loyal to the concept of Zionism. There he published some 300 proverbs and 50 sensational novels in Yiddish, mainly under the pseudonym M. Volfovich. He died, largely forgotten, in Los Angeles. Volumes of his poetry appeared in New York in 1895, 1900, and 1904.” (Yivo Encyclopedia) . Subjects: Hebrew Poetry. New York – Hebrew Poems. Dolitzky. Oclc lists 19 copies. ‎(FT) Large 8vo. Xi, 470 pages. In Hebrew. Volume two (of three) only. SUBJECT(S) : Bible. O. T. -- commentaries. Ehrlich was a Polish-born Bibical exegete who lived in worked in Germany and then the United States. His Randglossen zur hebraeischen Bibel (7 vols. , 1908-14) is a German commentary on the Bible, which like his Hebrew one consists of notes on the Bible. "Ehrlich included part of the material from his Hebrew commentary, but in an expanded form, as well as new interpretations arrived at since its publication; many of his earlier opinions are changed here. Only rarely does he comment on aspects dealt with by the 'higher criticism. ' He concentrates on textual criticism and reconstructions, and his very numerous emendations (especially in his German commentary) are at times conjectural (such as: haplography or dittography, letters having a similar appearance in the ancient or in the square script, the use of abbreviations, glosses, etc. ) , and in most cases are not even based on ancient translations. His comments, which are distinguished by their originality, at times have the quality of homiletics and are derived from Ehrlich's innovating spirit; yet through his sound linguistic instinct and fine linguistic differentiations he succeeded in illuminating and explaining, with great acumen and profundity, many verses and linguistic usages. Ehrlich's exegetical work is an important contribution to modern biblical exegesis. " (Raphael Weiss, EJ) Bookplate, front hinge repaired, good condition. (GER-27-2)‎

‎(Jt) Enelow, H. G.‎

‎A JEWISH VIEW OF JESUS.‎

‎New York: Bloch Publishing Company, 1931. Cloth. 8vo. 181 pages. "A U. S. Reform rabbi, scholar, and writer, Enelow was born in Kovno, Lithuania and went to the U. S. As a youth, and was ordained by Hebrew Union College in 1898. Enelow served as rabbi of Temple Israel, Paducah, Kentucky (1898-1901) , Temple Adath Israel, Louisville, Kentucky (1901-12) , and Temple Emanuel, New York (1912-34) . During World War I, Enelow served in France with the Jewish Welfare Board. He was vice-president of the Central Conference of American Rabbis (1925-27) , its president (1927-29) , and a member of both the American Historical Society and the Jewish Historical Society of America. He was instrumental in having chairs for Jewish studies established at Harvard (with the aid of his friend Lucius Littauer) and Columbia (aided by Mrs. Nathan Miller) . Enelow's four-volume edition of Israel Al-Nakawa's Menorat ha-Ma'or (1929-32) was an important contribution to Jewish scholarship. His thesis that this work served as the model for Isaac Aboab's work of the same name was widely discussed though not universally accepted.
