(Jt) Ginzberg, Louis.
THE UNITED SYNAGOGUE OF AMERICA
New York: Clarence Nathan, Inc, 1918. Half Cloth. 8vo. 19 pages. "A scholar of Talmud, Midrash, and aggadah, whose comprehensive works in Jewish law and lore made him the doyen of Jewish scholars in the U. S. , Ginzberg was born in Kovno, Lithuania, and studied at the yeshivot of Kovno and Telz. After leaving Lithuania he studied history, philosophy, and oriental languages at the universities of Berlin, Strasbourg, where his teacher was T. Noeldeke, and Heidelberg, completing his studies in 1898. In 1899 Ginzberg immigrated to the United States to accept a position at Hebrew Union College, but when he arrived the invitation was withdrawn. He joined the staff of the Jewish Encyclopedia as editor of the rabbinic department in 1900. In 1903 he resigned to accept a position teaching Talmud at the Jewish Theological Seminary, where he remained until his death. In teaching future rabbis and by his halakhic decisions and scholarly output, he became a principal architect of the Conservative movement. He was a founder (1919-20) and president for several years of the American Academy of Jewish Research. Ginzberg's work dealt mainly with the origins of aggadah, halakhah, and the literature of the geonim. While exploring the origins of aggadah, Ginzberg uncovered many lost legends of Jewish origins preserved only in early Christian texts. In his major work The Legends of the Jews (7 vols. , 1909-38) he combined hundreds of legends, maxims, and parables from the entire midrashic literature into a continuous narrative taken from the lives of the fathers of the people of Israel, its heroes, and its prophets. He analyzed the evolution of the legend from rabbinical texts, the external books and Hellenist literature, the early Christian texts, translations, exegeses, and the Kabbalah, correlating the material with the legends of other cultures and attempting to differentiate popular from scholarly creations. One note which Ginzberg sounded in all his writings was that it was not possible to understand Jewish history and culture without a thorough knowledge of halakhah" (Hertzberg, EJ) . OCLC lists no copies worldwide. Marbled edges and boards. Binding badly shaken. Bumping and fading to covers. Chipping to some pages. Title page detached but present. Otherwise in Good condition. Schechter was so impressed with the volume and felt that it would make an important contribution to academic scholarship that he promised to have JTSA publish it. Guth proceeded to have the work printed, only to be informed by Schechter that JTSA was not prepared to fund the publication. Guth managed to renegotiate the terms of publication with the printer and had it issued at his own expense. He did not relate this story until he published vol. 2, since Schechter was dead by then and Guth considered his death an atonement for the incident. Guth was born in Satu-Mare (Satmar) Hungary in 1856, immigrating to the US in 1898 or 1900. He was president of the Board of Orthodox Rabbis of New York and a member of Agudath Harabbonim. LE SIONISME POLITIQUE : PRÉCURSEURS ET MILITANTS : LE PRINCE DE LIGNE
Original Cloth. 12mo. 22 pages. 17 cm. First edition. In French. 'Political Zionism: Precursors and Militants: the Prince de Ligne', written by Baruch Hagani, a French Zionist activist, symbolist, disciple of Max Nordau, author of a biography on Bernard Lazare, and of a biography on Theodor Herzl. This work details the Emancipation of the Jews in the late 18th and early 19th century under the impact of the French Revolution, and details the life and work of Charles Joseph Prince De Ligne (1735-1814) , who was of a princely Belgian family, and an active proponent of Jewish emancipation in Belgium; owing to his efforts, civic emancipation occurred there in 1815; he is also known for the dispute with Voltaire about the Jews, his wartime service as a field marshal, his friendship with Joseph II and Catherine II, and his numerous works (34 volumes) . Hagani wrote a major book on the history of the Emancipation (L'Emancipation des Juifs, 1928) ; a response to the work was given by the Chief Rabbi of France and historian Maurice Liber, who challenged the theses of the work. (Jt) Heinemann, Yizhak.
TA`AME HA-MITSVOT BE-SIFRUT YISRAEL. VOLUME 1.
(FT) 8vo. 184 pages. In Hebrew. Volume one only. Second edition. SUBJECT(S) : Commandments, six hundred and thirteen. OCLC lists 10 copies of this edition worldwide. SERIES: `Ovadyah, sifre yesod be-hinukh ha-no`ar ha-dat. Born in Frankfurt, Heinemann [1876-1957] studied at German universities, and at the Berlin Rabbinical Seminary. In the years 191938, he lectured in Jewish philosophy and literature at the Jewish Theological Seminary in Breslau, where he reached the rank of professor... In 1939, he settled in Jerusalem, where he continued to pursue his studies of Jewish philosophy. He was awarded the Israel Prize for Jewish studies in 1955. Heinemann's [1876-1957] clear and well-founded investigations were the result of his facing the problems of contemporary Judaism and standing up to the influences of European culture as well as German nationalistic hatred. He expounded his ideas in lectures, in German, as well as in series of essays, in which he discusses topical problems like militarism or pacifism, by analyzing historical attitudes which stem from either Greek or Germanic thought, or from Christianity, and comparing them with the Jewish viewpoint as reflected in Scripture. The Jewish attitude, he concluded, is the correct one, and the Jew should refer back to his own sources and find his place in world culture, not by refuting his faith, but rather by adhering to it. (EJ, 2007) Ex library. Backstrip missing, cloth or paper removed from boards, water stains in margins throughout, binding loose, text is complete and readable, fair condition. (RAB-30-2)

(Jt) Hellman, Yael
A PROFILE OF JEWISH WOMEN EXECUTIVES IN CORPORATE AMERICA
Later Cloth. 8vo. XII, 141 pages. 22 cm. Photocopy, 1999. Authorized Facsimile. Thesis (Ph. D. ) - Pepperdine University, 1997. Includes bibliographical references (p. 125-130) . Contains14 tables and 16 figures. Studying Jewish executive women at Fortune 1000 companies provides a paradigm for business and community diversity policies. These individuals blend - and generally surpass - educational, family, community and religious imperatives of 3 female populations: American, Jewish, and executive. The investigation could thus measure interwoven American, traditional, and professional factors influencing career and personal decisions, and propose workplace and societal accommodations for this and other groups. The multidimensional method befitting this complex sample first examined primary and secondary texts to comprehend the interconnection of Judaic views about women and their work, Jewish and American historical forces, and contemporary religious and secular ideologies. The investigation then indexed responses to a survey, randomly distributed among Fortune 1000 executive women, assessing respondents' educational, familial, and spiritual backgrounds and commitments. These results, with some follow-up interviews, yielded a profile of the Jewish executive women. Lastly, the sample was statistically compared to American, Jewish, and executive women on points concerning corporate and community diversity conflicts. - Abstract. Subjects: Jewish women - United States. Women executives - United States. Women - Employment - United States. Businesswomen - United States. Businesswomen. Jewish women. Women - Employment. Women executives. OCLC lists 3 copies of facsimile (Harvard, Brandeis, Calif Lutheran) and one listing of the origianl (Pepperdine) . Institutional stamp on first endpage, otherwise clean and fresh. Very good condition. (WOMEN-2-1)
