He was educated att he yeshiva in Strasbourg and at the Ecole Rabbinique in Metz, where he also taught. Kahn never exerted great power, due to conflict with other leaders, the annexing of Alsace-Lorraine by Germany, and the influence of the Alliance Israelite Universelle over the migration of Eastern European Jews. Kahn was, however, head of Hibbat Zion in France and immersed himself in the practical issues surrounding settlement in Palestine. Against his Zionist tendencies, though, he felt that French Jews must be, first and foremost, French citizens. During the Dreyfus Affair, he wished to build a strong coalition in Dreyfus's defense, but was unable to persuade the Jewish leaders in France to do so. As a writer, Kahn edited a French translation of the Bible, helped Singer with the Jewish Encyclopaedia, and published a few sermons. (EJ) Ex library. Covers missing, good condition. Kautzsch (1841-1910) was a German Protestant Bible critic and Semitist who as editor of a number of works on Bible and Semitic philology helped educate a generation of German theologians and biblicists. Born in Plauen, Saxony, he taught in Leipzig, Basle, Tuebingen, and Halle. Kautsch visited Ottoman Palestine in 1876 and 1904, which led him in 1877 to participate in founding the Deutscher Palästina Verein. From 1888 he was one of the editors of the influential Theologische Studien und Kritiken. In the area of Bible studies Kautzsch published a translation and commentary on the Book of Psalms and a dissertation on biblical poetry. In collaboration with other scholars he wrote about the sources of Genesis, the books of the Bible, and Proverbs in the Polychrome Bible. He helped edit Die Apokryphen und Pseudepigraphen des Alten Testaments
and Textbibel des Alten und Neuen Testaments. On the subject of Hebrew and Aramaic philology he edited the second to eighth editions of H. Scholz' Abriss der hebraeischen Laut-und Formenlehre, and the 22nd to 28th editions of Gesenius' Hebrew Grammar, and a valuable grammar of biblical Aramaic in 1902, based on a similar work of 1888. Kautzsch's literary activity also includes a study on the apostle Paul, a history of the Moabites, and the editorship of the tenth and 11th editions of K. R. Hagenbach's Encyklopädie und Methodologie. Kautzsch was an involved church member who attempted to bring the results of biblical scholarship to the wider German Protestant community. Catalog written by Ari G. M. Kinsberg, guest curator; exhibition coordinated by Sharon Liberman Mintz, curator of Jewish Art. Dedicated to the memory of Rabbi Abraham Karp. The publication details the sources of 103 color photographic reproductions of Jewish Americana manuscripts, printed books, periodicals, archival papers, photographs, lithographic prints, letters, and etchings that are to be found in the extensive library of the Jewish Theological Seminary. This exhibition underscores the various ways in which uprooted communities and individuals reconstituted themselves in a new land. The challenges of maintaining and reshaping Jewish identity in the face of assimilation and unstable socioeconomic conditions spurred the creation of fraternal and charitable organizations alongside religious institutions. Jewish life flourished not only through the development of communal structures, but also through the efforts of individuals in business, literary arts and politics. Like its constituent Jewish communities, America was in the process of inventing and reinventing itself in response to new conditions. From the late-nineteenth-century era of mass immigration through the twentieth century, Jewish life metamorphosed with its environment. American culture was translated and disseminated to the Jews, for example, through the publication of a bilingual (Yiddish-English) Constitution and Declaration of Independence in 1891. This cultural diffusion flowed in both directions. Judaism was introduced to popular American culture through such literary ventures as Emma Lazarus's innovative Songs of a Semite. Klausner (1874-1958) "was an active Zionist and a fervent nationalist throughout his life, and his Zionist views color all his work. A delegate to the First Congress, he was greatly influenced by the political ideas of Herzl, although his cultural approach remained that of the Hovevei Zion and Ah ad Ha-Am. He attended nearly every subsequent Congress until the eleventh, contributing surveys on them to Ha-Shilo'a h. From 1930 he began to identify himself more and more with the policy of Jabotinsky and was regarded by the Revisionist Party, and later by its successor, Herut, as the ideologist of the movement. He edited the monthly Beitar (together with B. Netanyahu) from 1932-33 and came out vigorously, both in speech and in writing, in support of the ideals of the right-wing nationalists.
