Landon gave by radio to a mass meeting in Madison Square Garden. “Thousands of persons gathered tonight in the Madison Square Garden, in a rally under the auspices of the American Jewish Congress, Jewish Labor Committee and several cooperating organizations, to hear Christian and Jewish leaders condemn Nazi terrorism in Poland and elsewhere and to adopt resolution protesting against the Lublin Jewish ‘reservation’ and other aspects of Reich persecution. The audience cheered speeches and resolutions which branded Germany as an enemy of civilization, warned that Nazi oppression threatened not alone the Jews but Christians and all of mankind, and called for renewed efforts to safeguard democracy and equal rights in this country. ” ("Nazi Terrorism, Reds Assailed at Mass Rally of All Faiths Here. " Jewish Telegraphic Agency 14 Dec 1939.) “The American Jewish Congress and Jewish Labor Committee planned today to send a delegation to Washington in the near future to present to the Government a resolution adopted at last night's mass meeting of 20, 000 persons in the Madison Square Garden appealing to President Roosevelt to express to the German Government ‘America's abhorrence and condemnation’ of oppression in Poland. The resolution was adopted after the capacity audience--it was announced that 8, 000 had been turned away--had heard Herbert Hoover, Alfred M. Landon, Mayor LaGuardia, William Green, Dr. Stephen S. Wise and others denounce anti-Jewish ‘bestialities’ in Poland. An impressive part of the program was the chanting of ‘El Mole Rachamim’ by a chorus of the Jewish Cantors-Ministers Association. Thousands in the audience, on the platform and even in the press section shed tears during the memorial prayer for the victims of the occupation of Poland. Hoover, who arrived unexpectedly, coming by airplane from Chicago, read a message which he had sent previously (JTA NEWS DEC. 14) , in which he denounced ‘the bestialities visited upon the people of the Jewish faith. ’ Mayor LaGuardia, who had come in by plane with Hoover, denounced ‘those who are responsible for the outrages and the cruelties which are being inflicted upon hundreds of thousands of innocent people, ’ and the ‘new cruelty of exploited, occupied lands that were taken contrary to all rules of civilization. ’ He declared ‘there is being crystallized throughout the country today, throughout the world, a public opinion that will be visited upon the culprits not only in their day but for centuries to come. ’ Landon, speaking by radio from Topeka, said that ‘this evening you are expressing the conscience of America, a conscience that refuses to be silent in the midst of persecution. ’ He declared: ‘The time will come when the plain, average people of Germany will want to return to the amenities of international life. Feinstone (1878-1945),was born in Warsaw and trained as a woodcarver there. "After completing school he emigrated to England where he became president of a woodcarvers' union in London (1895). Later in Birmingham he was active in the beginnings of the British Labour Party. In 1910 Feinstone emigrated to the U.S. where he found employment in various skilled trades, securing permanent work in the umbrella industry. He soon became an official of the Umbrella Handle and Stick Makers' Union and an important figure in the United Hebrew Trades, an organization which sheltered the smaller and weaker American Jewish trade unions. Feinstone was a close associate of the organization's outstanding leader, Max Pine, whom he succeeded as United Hebrew Trades' secretary in 1928. Feinstone continued Pine's policy of supporting the socialist labor sector in Jewish Palestine through the Histadrut. He also represented the United Hebrew Trades on the executive board of the Central Trades and Labor Council of Greater New York, wrote articles in the New York Call and the Yiddish Jewish Daily Forward endorsing socialism and labor Zionism, and worked for the establishment of an independent labor party. With the advent of the New Deal, Feinstone's socialist teachings were incorporated by the American Labor Party, which satisfied his desire for a working class political organization. ‎Georg Mordekhaï Langer (1894-1943) est initié très jeune à la pensée hassidique, au mysticisme juif. A Prague, il connaît assez intimement Kafka à qui il enseigne l'hébreu. En 1923, il publie cette interprétation psychanalytique du hassidisme. La position de Langer est originale : il refuse le réductionnisme psychanalytique, sans rejeter les découvertes de Freud. Si la psychanalyse lui paraît un outil capital pour comprendre le judaïsme, il ne la considère pas comme une façon de traduire « l’unité du réel ». Reconnaître les pulsions sexuelles, le complexe d’Œdipe, la pulsion de mort, etc., au cœur du judaïsme et de l’histoire juive, n’implique pas un rejet de la croyance religieuse. Selon Langer, l’inconscient est la source de la révélation et les lois juives trouvent leur origine dans l’Éros, mais il n’en conclut pas, à l’instar de Freud et de la majorité de ses disciples, que la croyance est un leurre, un complexe infantile persistant, à la coloration névrotique. Le judaïsme n’a rien à « craindre » de la psychanalyse. Celle-ci ne peut qu’enrichir la compréhension de la « vérité » de la pensée juive. Pour Langer, les systèmes explicatifs juif et psychanalytique se complètent : chacun aborde la réalité sur des plans différents. C'est ainsi qu'adepte du hassidisme, Langer n'en continuera pas moins à publier régulièrement des écrits psychanalytiques dans la célèbre revue Imago que dirigeait Freud.‎
