Michelson, H.
THE JEW IN EARLY ENGLISH LITERATURE
Dustjacket has a few open and closed tears and pieces missing. Majority of DJ is intact. Please ask for a photo. ; From the early English Ballads through Chaucer's Canterbury Tales to Marlow's Jew of Malta and Shakespeare's Shylock the Jew has been a frequent literary subject -- generally as archvillain. In this impassioned and eloquent yet scholarly and incisive critique of early English literature the author has set out to prove that the always contemptuous characterization of the Jew was never based on observation but it was simply taken over from the New Testament. Through the careful analysis of the many surviving literary creations of the period and in the light of the history of the Jews in England before the expulsion, the author concludes that the Jew has been misrepresented and vilified on account of intolerance and fanaticism or because the artists knew no better. ; 175 pages

STORM IN THE COMMUNITY: YIDDISH POLITICAL PAMPHLETS OF AMSTERDAM JEWRY, 1797-1798
1st edition, original cloth with dust jacket, 8vo. Vii+527 pages. In Yiddish and English. The first in a series of Yiddish polemical pamphlets (Diskursn) appeared one week before the elections to the second National Assembly in the Republic of the Netherlands on August 1, 1797. Inspired by the expanded freedom of the press and the satirical and often vulgar Spectatorial writings which were popular at the time, a small but energetic group of enlightened Jews in Amsterdam decided the previous summer to publish a periodical. These Yiddish polemical pamphlets would serve as an informative and propagandistic vehicle through which members of the new community could anonymously persuade the Jews of Amsterdam to choose the party of progress and enlightenment. The author or authors inveighed strongly against the alleged abuses in the established community and those they held responsible, the parnosim (board of directors) and their officials. In order to reach the Jewish masses in a city with about 20, 000 Ashkenazic Jewish inhabitants, the reformers chose to write the Diskursn in Amsterdam Yiddish. Their efforts were so successful that the established community thought it necessary to enter the fray by publishing its own version of a thirteenth installment shortly before the thirteenth installment of the original series was due to appear. From then on, two series of Diskursn competed for public favor. Using criticism, salacious gossip, slander, and accusations, the same three or four main characters and a few secondary ones railed against the excesses and foibles of the other community. Both series ended after the parnosim of the old community were deposed in the early spring of 1798. By then, 24 Diskursn from the new community and 11 from the established community had appeared, together more than 500 printed pages. Of course we cannot judge the two communities fairly based on the texts of the Diskursn. Both sought to discredit their opponents with stories of whores, sexual scandals, illegitimate children, hypocrisy, religious violations, bankruptcy, and fraud. Nevertheless, the pamphlets describe the environment of Amsterdam Jewry and reveal what interested those Jews and how they responded to revolutionary changes. All of this is depicted by inventive authors who came up time and again with different, often humorous settings for their volleys of curses and torrents of abuse. These Yiddish polemical pamphlets are a rare phenomenon, not just in the history of Jewish communities in the period of emancipation, but in the histories of Yiddish literature and satirical/polemical periodicals as well. This is the first-ever bilingual edition of a major portion of this collection of documents and the first time any of them have been published in English translation. A lengthy introduction and five appendices help the reader understand and appreciate these colorful Dutch Jews and their often impassioned arguments. Near perfect condition, Very Good Condition Overall. (AC-6-11)

Mielziner, M. (1828-1903)
DIE VERHÄLTNISSE DER SKLAVEN BEI DER ALTEN HEBRÄERN, NACH BIBLISCHEN UND TALMUDISCHEN QUELLEN DARGESTELLT
Rebound in modern paper wrappers, 8vo. , 68 pages. First edition (? ) . In German. On cover: "Ein Beitrag zur hebräisch-jüdischen Alterthumskunde". Title translates as "The Conditions of Slaves as Represented in Ancient Hebrew, Biblical and Talmudic Sources." Given the appearance of this work on the eve of the Civil War in the US, and Mielziner's orientation toward America (to which he would soon emigrate) this work must be seen as a clear reference to the ongoing Slavery debates in the US raging at the time. A Rabbi and Professor, Mielziner "was born and educated in Germany, where he began his rabbinic career. He headed a Jewish school in Copenhagen, Denmark, while earning his Ph. D. From the University of Giessen (1859) . Immigrating to the United States, Mielziner served as a congregational rabbi and educator in New York City until 1879, when Isaac Mayer Wise appointed him professor of Talmud at Hebrew Union College in Cincinnati. Upon Wise's death, Mielziner was chosen interim president of the seminary, a position he held for three years, from 1900 until his death. Mielziner was a charter member of the Central Conference of American Rabbis (CCAR) , and his scholarly input on relevant subjects had an important influence on early discussions of CCAR policy. He published several treatises on Jewish law - including a volume on halakhah and divorce and marriage, as well as an overview of rabbinic civil and criminal law - but is best known for his classic work Introduction to the Talmud, published originally in 1894 and reissued three times since; the most recent edition, which appeared in 1968, contains an updated bibliography compiled by Alexander Guttmann . Mielziner's exposition of talmudic methodology - featuring a skillful dissection of the Talmud's distinctive system of technical terms and phrases adapted to its unique methods of investigation and demonstration - has been an indispensable handbook for the serious student of the Talmud for more than a century. " (Gordon, EJ, 2007) Missing original covers. Small tear to title page. Small chips to corners of a few pages. Pages brown, but in good condition and mid 19th century paper remains good. Good + condition. (RAB-45-13)

Berlin - Wien, Benjamin Harz 1924. gr.-8°. XV, 322 S., 1 Bl., Orig.-Leinenband mit Einbandgoldpräg. u. Farbschnitt, sehr gutes Exemplar. Erste Ausgabe. Freimann S. 250; NDB XVII,483; Wininger IV,171. (NDB 17).

Mill, John
PIYONERN UN BOYER: MEMUARN [VOL. 1 ONLY]
Original Cloth. 8vo. 308 pages. 22 cm. First Edition. Volume one only (of two volumes) . With frontispiece portrait of the author, and a dozen black and white photographs throughout. Pioneers and Builders, the memoirs of Bund activist John Mill (18701952) . John Mill (also known as Yoysef Shloyme Mil) was one of the founders of the Jewish Labor Bund and a central activist during its first two decades. [
] He was instrumental in the creation of the Jewish Labor Bund, and indeed was one of 13 activists to participate in its founding congress in Vilna in 1897. As one of the Bunds main leaders in its first years, Mill held the important position of editor of the main party organ, Der yidisher arbeter. While strictly adhering to orthodox Marxism, he made independent and bold editorial decisions, including the choice to publish articles by the Bunds rivals such as Khayim Zhitlovski and Rosa Luxemburg. Forced to flee Russia after the wave of arrests that decimated the Bund leadership in 1898, he lived in exile in Geneva, where he established the Bunds Foreign Committee. Mill was one of the most vocal supporters to encourage the Bund to adopt a national program during debates at the organizations Third Congress (Kovno, December 1899) . Influenced by Austro-Marxist Karl Renner and the South Slav delegations proposal at the Brünn Congress of the All-Austrian Social Democratic Party (Gesamtpartei) in 1899, he held that Russia must be transformed into a multinational state where each nationality would be legally defined as the aggregate of its individual members (rather than on a territorial basis) and granted self-government on cultural matters, a concept later known as national-cultural autonomy. Mills efforts bore fruit at the partys Fourth Congress (Bialystok, May 1901) , when, after several years of heated debates, the autonomist proposal was accepted in principle. Until World War I, Mill lived mostly in Geneva and Paris, in dire poverty, and he continued to lead the Bunds Foreign Committee in Western Europe. In that capacity, he represented the Bund in the Socialist International and in the partys interactions with other socialist organizations. Following his emigration to the United States in 1915, Mill settled in Chicago and left active politics, but he remained close to Bundist circles and wrote extensively for Yiddish publications. He died in 1952. (YIVO Encyclopedia of Jews in Eastern Eruope) Subjects: Jews - Soviet Union - Societies, etc. Labor movement - Soviet Union - Societies, etc. Allgemeyner Idisher arbayterbund in Lita, Poylen un Rusland.
