(https://www.shapell.org/manuscript/jewish-civil-war-surgeon-morris-asch/). In his 2021 article Forgotten Jewish Doctors in the Civil WarAvi Heiligman notes that Surgeon Dr. Morris Asch served with the Army of the Potomac in the Union Army and was present at many important battles during the war. Asch was born in Philadelphia and graduated from Jefferson Medical College in 1855 as a medical doctor. When the fighting began in 1861, Dr. Asch was appointed as an assistant surgeon in the U.S. Army. A few months later, he went on active duty and in 1862 was appointed surgeon-in-chief for the artillery reserves in the Army of the Potomac. He later held positions as the medical inspector of the army, medical director for the 24th Army Corps, and after the war became the staff surgeon for General Phillip Sheridan.During the Civil War, Asch was at important battles including Gettysburg, Chancellorsville, The Wilderness, and Appomattox Court House. Altogether, he tended to wounded soldiers during sixteen battles. Right before the war concluded in 1865, Asch attained the rank of major and continued serving in the army even after the conclusion of hostilities. While on Sheridans staff, he came down with yellow fever. Once he recovered, Asch rejoined the army and tended to the wounded during the wars with the Plains Indians.Dr. Asch retired in 1873 and became a renowned expert in the field of laryngology. Mickve Israel [Hope of Israel], one of the oldest Philadelphia synagogues, was founded in the 1740s by Sephardic Jews. Morais, an abolitionist and founder of the Jewish Theological Seminary of New York, counsels, "If there be pride in us, if the vanity of exhibiting a more sightly structure than others possess, impelled us to designate this place as our future Synagogue...let us then bury first such unholy feelings in the bosom of the earth. " Also printed is a prayer in Hebrew, composed by Morais. OCLC lists 7 copies worldwide [Penn, JTS, YU, NYPL, HUC, Florida Atlantic, NLI) Light edgewear, Very Good Condition (KH-6-63-B-'delx)

Morais, Vamberto
PEQUENA HISTORIA DO ANTI-SEMITISMO
Softbound. 8vo. 387 pages. 21 cm. First edition. In Portuguese. Title translates as: A Short History of Anti-Semitism. The author of this chronological study of anti-Jewish persecution is a Brazilian-born BBC official with a background in classical studies, and the richest part of his 2500-year narrative deals with antiquity-which featured no anti-Semitism in the modern sense. [
] Also notable is the account of Jewish fortunes in Brazil under the relatively tolerant Dutch colonialists and the relatively ineffectual Portuguese Inquisition. [Ineffectually] Massacres and expulsions are viewed as mere unpredictable epidemics. By the same token, in the modern period Morais describes manipulations of popular backwardness like the intelligence-agency, forgery of the Protocols of Zion; yet the emphasis is on the general psychology of stereotypes and ethnocentrism, rather than the deliberate destruction of the Enlightenment tradition from above. [Review from Kirkus Reviews] Subjects: Antisemitism - History. Antissemitismo, - história. Questão judaica. Outer edges lightly soiled. Light foxing on first endpage. Light tear to backstrip. Otherwise fresh and clean. Good condition. (HOLO2-99-31)

Mordecai Manuel Noah; Charlotte Elizabeth
GLEANINGS FROM A GATHERED HARVEST [BOUND WITH] JUDAHS LION [FIRST ENGLISH-LANGUAGE ZIONIST NOVEL]
Later cloth. 16mo. 216; 406 pages. 17 cm. Gleanings From a Gathered Harvest, Singerman 0914, (1847) second edition. Judahs Lion, Singerman 0832, First US edition. Two volumes bound together; the Dodd engraved title page is absent from Judahs Lion; contains the previous owners decorative stamp (Alfred L. Brown) on first page of first page of each work. Attractively bound in contemporary half leather and marbled boards with gilt title on spine. Contains the first English Zionist novel by Charlotte Elizabeth Tonna, bound with Gleaning from a Gather Harvest a collection of essays and editorials on contemporary morals, customs, and domestic economy in New York, with essays on Immigration and observance of the Sabbath, written by the famous American proto-Zionist Mordecai Manuel Noah, an American politician, journalist, playwright, and philanthropist; born in Philadelphia, Pa. , July 19, 1785; died in New York city March 22, 1851. [
] Noah's place in Jewish history is due to his activity as a Jewish liberator and nationalist. His travels in Europe and his thorough acquaintance with Jewish affairs had opened his eyes to the unfortunate situation of the Jewsa homeless people lodged in the midst of other peoples with whom they could never amalgamate. Like the majority of Zionists, Noah advocated the restoration of the Jews to Palestine, their ancient heritage; and though he firmly believed in the coming of the Messiah, he nevertheless held to the view that the restoration of the Jews must come about through the Jews themselves. (EJ 1906) Judahs Lion is considered to be the first English language Zionist Novel (it predates George Eliots Daniel Deronda by thirty years) ; the story concerns the return of an English Jew (Alick) to the Holy Land; it binds together English and Jewish history. This was the last novel the author wrote. Charlotte Elizabeth Tonna (1790-1846) wrote on the plight of English women factory workers, was well known in her time for her novels, essays and poems, was passionate about gardening, a pioneer of deaf education, and also wrote childrens stories. In her later years she defended the rights of Judaism, and in her last three years was a close friend of Moses Montefiore. Subjects: Jews - Fiction. Fiction (English) . United States - Social life and customs - 1783-1865. OCLC lists 7 copies of this edition of Gleanings and 17 copies of Judahs Lion. This edition (1847) of Gleanings sold at auction in 2011 for US 1080; The last copy of Lion offered at auction was over 30 years ago in 1987,.Light rubbing to edges of leather, very light foxing throughout, otherwise clean and fresh. MINIATURE PAINTINGS IN JUDAEO-PERSIAN MANUSCRIPTS
Original Wraps. 4to. 56 pages. 26 cm. First edition. 1 microfiche inserted in pocket. Nine color illustraions. Important monograph, detailing manuscripts from various locations, dating 17th-19th centuries. Persian Jews took part in or sponsored the production of miniatures to illuminate manuscripts. In some of the Shahin and ? Imrani manuscripts, and in those of the classical poetry in Hebrew transliteration, large colored miniatures of exceptional beauty were incorporated. It is not clear who the artists were who drew these pictures. It is quite possible that in some cases non-Jewish workshops were responsible for the execution of the illustrations in Judeo-Persian manuscripts. A study of the miniatures is by J. Gutmann, in: SBB, 8 (1968) , 5476. An illustrated catalogue of miniatures in Judeo-Persian manuscripts is provided by V. B. Moreen, Miniature Painting in Judeo-Persian Manuscripts (1985) . (EJ, 2008) . Subjects: Jewish illumination of books and manuscripts - Iran - Catalogs. Illumination of books and manuscripts - Iran - Catalogs. Jews in art - Catalogs. Jews - Iran - Intellectual life. Light wear to wraps, otherwise fresh. Very good condition. (ART-22-50) xx

MORIN Edgar

Mortkowicz-Olczakowa, Hanna
JANUS KORCZAK: MAESTRO Y MARTIR
Original Paper Wrappers. Small 8vo. 276 pages. Ports. 21 cm. In Spanish. Title translates to English as, Janus Korczak: Teacher and Martyr. Korczak was a Polish author, educator, and social worker. Born into a wealthy and assimilated Warsaw family, qualified as a physician and soon became interested in the poor, working as a volunteer in summer camps for underprivileged children. In 1911 he became the head of a new Jewish orphanage in Warsaw. His educational approach, revolutionary in its time, gave children a system of self-government and the opportunity of producing their own newspaper, Maly Przeglad ("Little Journal") , which appeared as a weekly supplement to the Zionist daily Nasz Przeglad (192039) . His success prompted the authorities to secure his aid in establishing a parallel non-Jewish orphanage near Warsaw. With the rise of Hitler and the spread of antisemitism, Korczak's Jewish consciousness deepened and he became Poland's non-Zionist representative on the Jewish Agency. After the Nazi invasion of Poland, he strove to protect the orphanage in the Warsaw Ghetto, to which it had been transferred in 1940, and rescued many other hapless youngsters. He was sent to Treblinka, along with 200 of his orphans, where he died. EJ, 2007. Translated by Esther G. De Adin from the original Polish, Janus Korczak. Spine repaired and reinforced with tape. Some wear to covers. Small gauging to edges of last 20 pages, but no loss of text. Good Condition. (HOLO2-93-21)
