" Stanislaw Wygodzki (1907-1992) was a Polish writer of Jewish origin. He published his first volume of poetry in 1933 before the Nazi occupation of Poland, during which Wygodzki was first interred in the Bedzin ghetto and later in the concentration camps of Auschwitz, Dachau, Oranienburg and Sachsenhausen. His health impacted by his experiences, Wygodzki did not resume publishing until 1947, becoming a successful writer and publishing poetry, short stories and one novel. Wygodzki, who lost his wife, daughter and parents in Auschwitz, was one of four winners of the 1969 "Remembrance Award", awarded annually by the World Federation of Bergen-Belsen Associations for "excellence in literature on the Nazi atrocities against European Jewry". Yannai, liturgical poet, one of the principal representatives of the old Palestinian piyyut.
Davidson's publications opened new horizons for research into Yannai. In 1910 he found a Genizah fragment with quotations and beginnings of poems from the 'Mahzor Yannai'; this established the existence of a greater poetic work of Yannai's. In 1919 he found in some Greek-Hebrew genizah, fragment palimpsests (published by F. C. Burkitt in Fragments of the Book of Kings (1897) , and by C. Taylor in Hebrew-Greek Cairo Genizah Palimpsests, 1900) some of Yannai's kerovot which were thought lost, and which he later published with notes by L. Ginzberg (Mahzor Yannai (1919) ) . In 1928 Davidson found following a suggestion by Brody three other poems by Yannai among the Genizah fragments in the Bodleian Library: he published them in Genizah Studies (vol. 3, 1928) . Treatise regarding the tenets of the Karaite faith, arranged according to the Ten Commandments and in alphabetical order, written in poetic Hebrew. Lays out the the fundamentals of the Karaite faith and includes a harsh attack against rabbinic Judaism and its rabbis.Yehudah Hadassi, son of Eliyahu Hadassi, nicknamed "Ha-Avel," lived in Constantinople in the 12th century. This is his primary work. "This work was printed at Eupatoria (1836), with an introduction by Caleb Afendopolo entitled 'Nahal Eshkol.' Alphabets 99-100 and part of 98 were excluded from this edition by the censor, but have been published by Bacher in 'J. Q. R.' (viii. 431 et seq.). Hadassi mentions a previously written work of his entitled 'Sefer Teren bi-Teren,' a collection of homonyms which, he says, was an addition to the eighty pairs of Ben Asher (alphabets 163, 168, 173). There exists also a fragment which Firkovich (Cat. No. 619, St. Petersburg) entitled 'Sefer ha-Yalkut' and attributed to Hadassi, while Pinsker regarded it as an extract from Tobiah's 'Sefer ha-Mizwot.' P. F. Frankl, however, agreed with Firkovich in regarding it as a part of the 'Eshkol ha-Kofer,' which Hadassi had previously written in prose. In the Karaite Siddur there are four piyyutim by Hadassi" (Kaufmann Kolher & M. Seligsohn in EJ). A number of Karaite works were printed in Gozleve and they are all rare. Leopold Ritter von Sacher-Masoch was an Austrian nobleman, writer and journalist, who gained renown for his romantic stories of Galician life. The term masochism is derived from his name. During his lifetime, Sacher-Masoch was well known as a man of letters, in particular an utopian thinker who espoused socialist and humanist ideals in his fiction and non-fiction. (wikipedia 2018). In these quiet, out-of-the-way villages had Sacher Masoch, united to the Jew by no tie of creed, found material for his Jewish Tales. Includes a 9 word inscription written and signed by the author to Shalom Spiegel, renowned scholar and professor of Hebrew literature at JTS, in August 1937, just before the start of the war. Dr. Tulo Nussenblatt was a famous Zionist scholar and historian before WWII. During the war, Nussenblatt housed many people in his bunker in the Warsaw ghetto. He died in the uprising, still clutching his briefcase full of book materials about Theodor Herzl, about whom he wrote this book. A biography of Herzl divided into 4 sections with smaller divisions within each. Includes several black-and-white photographs of Herzl, his colleagues, and his possessions, as well as facsimiles of important letters, documents, and objects from his life. Both volumes are overflowing with gorgeous Yiddish modernist woodcut illustrations by Aharon Gudlman (1890-1978), with 15 full- or partial-page illustrations and 20 fanciful initial Yiddish letters in Volume I; and 12 full or partial page illustrations and 15 initial letters in Volume II. Detailed red bordering on each page add to the deluxe illustrated feel of the work as well. "Goodelman grew up in Russia and studied at an art school in Odessa. After graduating, he moved to New York and attended the Cooper Union, the National Academy of Design, and the Beaux-Arts Institute of Design, working during the day to support himself. He traveled to Paris for a brief time, but was forced to return to America at the outbreak of World War I. He was a member of the Yiddish branch of the Communist Party, and art editor for YKUF, a Jewish cultural magazine. He...was a founding member of the Society of American Sculptors.
