[Isaiah Leo Sharfman, President; Jacob H. Schiff, Honorary Vice-President; Jacob Chasnoff, Executive Council]
HARVARD MENORAH SOCIETY. PROSPECTUS 1907-1908
1st edition. Original illustrated paper wrappers, Large Octavo. 15 (1) pages. Founding publication document of Menorah movement, which grew to over 80 chapters nationwide by the 1920s. This is the Society (at Harvard, the first chapter) , prospectus layout out their proposal for the study and promotion of Hebraic culture and ideals outlining the efforts made to increase the popularity of Hebraic Studies. Includes four appendixes: A) Constitution, B) List of Officers (including Isaiah Leo Sharfman, president, Jacob H. Schiff, Honorary Vice-President, Jacob Chasnoff, Executive Council, and Dr. Shmaryohu Lewin as an honorary member) , 54 Members of classes from 1908-11 as well as 7 Associates, C) Program of Dedication Exercises in the Phillips Brooks House Parlor with Professor George Foot Moore among the speakers, and D) lays out the academic course of studies for the society. Cover illustration by Hyman Askowith. The Menorah Association and Menorah Journal Both grew out of the Harvard Menorah Society, a Jewish campus group formed in 1906 by Henry Hurwitz, at the time an undergraduate at the university. Influenced by the new humanism then being propounded in Cambridge by such figures as William James and George Santayana, the society sought to pursue the study of humanistic values in Judaism and to develop a positive intellectual relationship to Jewish tradition and belief. Similar groups soon formed on other American campuses, and in 1913 an intercollegiate Menorah Association was established which eventually numbered some 80 chapters. The association
[was] the first attempt to establish an intercollegiate Jewish body of its kind it helped pave the way for such later organizations as the B'nai B'rith Hillel societies (Halkin in EJ, 2007, p. 55) A 1914 work about the Menorah movement noted about these begnings at Harvard: The work of the Society is designed to give its members primarily, and the students at the university in general, a just appreciation of Hebraism, which is conceived as included all the manifestations of the Jewis spirit in the past and in the present, and an intimate knowledge of contemporary Jewish problems ...through the kindness of Mr. Jacob H. Schiff, the Harvard Menorah Society has been able to offer to Harvard University annually since 1908 a prize of $100 for the best essay by an undergraduate on a subject concerning the history and achievements of the Jewish people....Faithful to the intellectual and idealistic purposes of its founders, the Harvard Menorah Society...has brought together Russian Jews and German Jews as they have never been brought together before at Harvard
. And now, with a loyal and increasing band of alumni all over the country with a large and ever growing student membership, with a high and assured status in the life of Harvard University, the Harvard Menorah Society looks forward with confidence to its future in the service of Hebraic Culture and Ideals (The Menorah Movement for the Study and Advancement of Jewish Culture and Ideals, Ann Arbor, 1914) . OCLC lists only 1 copy anywhere (HUC) . Wrappers sunned with edgewear, institutional blindstamp on cover. Good condition. Very rare and important.

[Jehovah's Witnesses]
FASCISM OR FREEDOM?
1st edition. Original illustrated paper wrappers, 12mo, 64 pages. 4.75x7 inches. Cover shows a miserable prisoner flanked by ball & chains of swastika and hammer & sickle, behind whom hover Hitler, Mussolini, Stalin, and front and center The Pope. "Jehovah's Witnesses were subjected to intense persecution under the Nazi regime. The Nazis targeted Jehovah's Witnesses because they were unwilling to accept the authority of the state, because of their international connections, and because they were strongly opposed to both war on behalf of a temporal authority and organized government in matters of conscience. Within months of the Nazi takeover, regional governments, primarily those of Bavaria and Prussia, initiated aggressive steps against Jehovah's Witnesses, breaking up their meetings, ransacking and then occupying their local offices. By April 1, 1935, the Reich and Prussian Minister of the Interior ordered the responsible local officials to dissolve the Watchtower Society. Many actions of Jehovah's Witnesses antagonized Nazi authorities. While Witnesses contended that they were apolitical and that their actions were not anti-Nazi, their unwillingness to give the Nazi salute, to join party organizations or to let their children join the Hitler Youth, their refusal to participate in the so-called elections or plebiscites, and their unwillingness to adorn their homes with Nazi flags made them suspect. A special unit of the Gestapo compiled a registry of all persons believed to be Jehovah's Witnesses. Gestapo agents infiltrated Bible study meetings" (USHMM 2016) No copies listed in OCLC. Evenly- toned newsprint, Very Good Condition. Holocaust-related Jehovah's Witnesses material is rare, this imprint especially so. (HOLO2-134-61) xx

[John Hay, Secretary Of State] McIlvaine, Charles; Leiser, Joseph; Straus, Oscar S; Root, Elihu; White, Andrew Dickson; Krauskopf, Joseph
UNVEILING AND CONSECRATION OF THE JOHN HAY MEMORIAL WINDOW AT THE TEMPLE OF THE REFORM CONGREGATION KENESETH ISRAEL [SERIES 20, NO. 5 OF SUNDAY DISCOURSES. [POST EVENT PUBLICATION]
1st edition. Original paper wrappers. 8vo. 25 pages, 23 cm. In English. Speeches and ceremony celebrating a stained glass window in commemoration of former Secretary of State John Hay. John Milton Hay (18381905) was a U. S. Statesman who supported Romanian and Russian Jewish rights. Hay was a secretary of state under presidents William McKinley and Theodore Roosevelt from 1898 until his death in 1905. He was involved in U. S. Diplomatic representations during this period on behalf of Romanian and Russian Jews. In 1902, at the urging of American Jewish leaders including Oscar S. Straus and Jacob H. Schiff, Hay addressed a note to the signatories of the Berlin Treaty of 1878 protesting Romania's violation of that treaty by its restrictions on Jews. Following the Kishinev pogrom of 1903, again after Jewish pressure and with an eye to domestic political considerations, Hay publicized a protest petition drawn up by B'nai B'rith. Oscar Straus, one of the speakers, was appointed to the Permanent Court of Arbitration at the Hague under President Theodore Roosevelt. He would be reappointed by President Roosevelt in 1908, President Taft in 1912, and President Wilson in 1920. Straus made history in 1906 when he became the first Jewish cabinet member after being appointed by Roosevelt as Secretary of Commerce and Labor. He also participated at the Paris Peace Conference, advising President Wilson on the interests of European Jewry. Elihu Root, another of the speakers, served as the Secretary of State under President Theodore Roosevelt and as Secretary of War under Roosevelt and President William McKinley. He is sometimes considered to be the prototype of the 20th century political wise man, advising presidents on a range of foreign and domestic issues
. Root was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 1912. Andrew Dickson White, another speaker, was an American historian and educator, who was the cofounder of Cornell University and served as its first president for nearly two decades
. He was later appointed as a US diplomat to Germany and Russia (Wikipedia, 2018) .
