[Leipzig: Commercial Law; Leipziger Juden-Ordnung]
Der Churfürstl. Sächs. Handelstadt Leipzigk Kauf- Und Handels-Recht
Boards bound with Latin missal with musical notation. 16mo. (4) , 132, 4 pages. Only edition. In German. A compendium of regulations of the City of Leipzig. Of special interest are the edicts concerning Jews: "Leipziger Juden-Ordnung de anno 1682." The relationship between this city in Saxony and the Jews is an anomaly. On the one hand, Jews were banished from Saxony in 1430 - (it took three centuries for them to be readmitted to Leipzig) . On the other hand, on account of the seasonal Leipzig Fair, the number of Jewish merchants present in the City would swell to the point that these visitors were formally authorized to conduct gatherings in their own prayer-rooms ("Judenschulen") . Indeed, permitted to attend the Fair were not only German Jews, but Jews of Eastern Europe as well. In the present text, Johann-Georg III, Duke of Saxony, mandates several laws concerning Jewish tradesmen and the nature of Jewish participation in the Fair. In order to attend, the Jew required attestation to his professional honesty ("ein Ehrlicher Handelsmann") (par. 1) ; he was forbidden to lodge in the suburbs (par. 2) ; and at all times, he must be in possession of his various individual passes (pars. 3-6) . Also, legal-clauses are addressed to the wives, children and servants of the Jewish tradesmen visiting (pars.10-12) . Of peculiar note: Jewish musicians were barred from trading altogether (par. 21) . See JE, Vol. VII, pp. 673-4. Subjects: German Law. Books before 1700. OCLC lists 14 copies worldwide. Backstrip detached. Binding very solid. Paper missal over boards torn in places and foxed. All edges lightly bumped. Pages lightly foxed around text throughout, fresh and clean otherwise. Good condition. (GER-38-46)

[Macleish, Archibald]; Fortune Magazine
JEWS IN AMERICA
1st edition thus. Original Wrappers. 8vo. 15 pages. 23 cm. Nazi-era abridged and condensed version of an article originally published in Fortune magazine, and later published by Random House. This booklet presented by the Editors of Digest and Review. The Jewish Problem has become violently acute in recent years. What is anti-Semitism? How does it start? Does it exist in the United States? Is it true that Jews control industry, business, public opinion? [
] The Editors of Fortune undertook to make such an impartial survey. Their conclusions, it is safe to say, were totally unexpected both by Jews and non-Jews. The results of this research, appearing originally in Fortune, were later published in book form by Random House. (Publishers Description) In reference to the original appearance of this article in Fortune Isaac Goldberg writes, in his monograph The So-Called Protocols of the Elders of Zion , It proves, once again beyond the slightest doubt, that the Jew despite this prominent person or the other, is not anything like the power in national affairs invented by the Protocol-terrorizers. (Goldberg, pg 24) Subjects: Jews United States. Jewish Question. Antisemitism. OCLC lists 13 copies worldwide. Very minimal age toning to wrappers. Bright crisp and clean. Very goodcondition. [Mendelssohn, Moses] Wolf, Michael; Euchel, Isaac Abraham
TOLDOT HA-HAKHAM HA-HOKER ELOHI RABENU MOSHEH BEN MENAHEM ZTS"L
MENDELSSOHNS LEBEN VON ISAK EICHEL. [STANDS ON ITS OWN; VOL I, PART II OF ZEMIROT ISRAEL. SEMIROTH JISRAEL: SAMMLUNG DER KLASSISCHEN WERKE NEUHEBRÄISCHER POETEN UND PROSAIKER]
1st edition. Original printed wrappers, 16mo (small), 208 pages. In Hebrew with German-Heberw title pages as front cover. Biography and some writings of Moses Mendelssohn (Moses of Dessau; 17291786) philosopher of the German Enlightenment in the pre-Kantian period, early Maskil, and a renowned Jewish figure in the 18th century. Born in Dessau, son of a Torah scribe, Mendelssohn received a traditional Jewish education under the influence of David Fraenkel, who was then rabbi of Dessau. When the latter was appointed rabbi of Berlin in 1743, Mendelssohn followed him there in order to pursue his religious studies and to acquire a general education. He earned his livelihood with difficulty while simultaneously studying Talmud diligently and acquiring a broad education in literature and philosophy. In addition to his fluent knowledge of German and Hebrew, he acquired knowledge of Latin, Greek, English, French, and Italian. His teachers were young, broadly educated Jews, such as the Galician immigrant Israel M. Zamosc, who taught him medieval Jewish philosophy, the medical student Abraham Kisch, who taught him Latin, and the well-born Berlin Jew, A.S. Gumpertz, who taught him French and English and in general served as a model of a pious Jew immersed in the larger intellectual world. During this period he met the writer and dramatist G.E. Lessing (1754) and a deep and lifelong friendship developed between them. In 1750 he became a teacher in the house of Isaac Bernhard, owner of a silk factory; in 1754, he was entrusted with the bookkeeping of the factory and eventually he became a partner in the enterprise. Throughout his life he worked as a merchant, while carrying out his literary activities and widespread correspondence in his free time. Only in 1763 was he granted the "right of residence" in Berlin by the king. In 1762, he married Fromet Guggenheim of Hamburg, and they had six children. In 1754 Mendelssohn began to publish at first with the assistance of Lessing philosophical writings and later also literary reviews. He also started a few literary projects (for example, the short-lived periodical Kohelet Musar) in order to enrich and change Jewish culture and took part in the early Haskalah. In 1763, he was awarded the first prize of the Prussian Royal Academy of Sciences for his work Abhandlung über die Evidenz in metaphysischen Wissenschaften ("Treatise on Evidence in Metaphysical Knowledge"). However, when the academy elected him as a member in 1771, King Frederick II refused to ratify its decision. In 1769, he became embroiled in a dispute on the Jewish religion, and from then on, he confined most of his literary activity to the sphere of Judaism. His most notable and enduring works in this area included the translation into German and commentary on the Pentateuch, Sefer Netivot ha-Shalom ("Book of the Paths of Peace," 178083) and his Jerusalem: oder, Ueber religiöse Macht und Judenthum ("Jerusalem, or On Religious Power and Judaism," 1783), the first polemical defense of Judaism in the German language and one of the pioneering works of modern Jewish philosophy. An active intermediary on behalf of his own people in difficult times and a participant in their struggle for equal rights, he was at the same time a forceful defender of the Enlightenment against the opposition to it which gained strength toward the end of his life. In the midst of a literary battle against one of the leading figures of the counter-Enlightenment, he died in 1786 (EJ 2007; JE 1905). Zeitlin, p. 424. Bibliography of the Hebrew Book 1470-1960 #000109459. SUBJECT(S): Jews -- Germany -- Biography. Rabbis Philosophers. OCLC: 492895808. OCLC lists 4 copies (Staatsbib. Berlin, LBI, HUC, Hebrew Col.), though, strangely, our edition ends on page 208 (final page!) rather than the 224 as the OCLC copies indicate. Uncut copy, some wear & darkening to wrappers, paper remains bright white and nice. About Very Good- Condition. Nice copy of this scarce work. (KH-10-9)

[MESSRS I. CAMONDO ET CIE ON BEHALF OF [PROBABLY] MOISE DE CAMONDO, (Ottoman Empire-born French banker, art collector and philanthropist), (1860-1935)].
Autograph letter signed.
Very Good French Original autograph letter signed (ALS) by P.pon "[We hereby declare that Ms. L. Cassinelli occupied our house located in Pera Rue, Hodja Ali No 19. On December 1, 1887, and left him on September 30, 1899. That during all time, he did not pay me the tax... P. pon de la succession de feu le Comte A. de Camondo. [i.e. On behalf of the succession of Count A[braham Salomon] Camondo, (1781-1873)]. Probably it's signed by his advocate of Moise de Camondo. Recipient is not defined. Letter indicates one of Camondo family's houses in Pera, Constantinople. 26,5x21 cm. Completely in French. 14 lines. On a paper watermarked "William Brown & Co., London". William Brown and Co. were located in London in this 'St. Mary Axe, and 40 to 41, Old Broad Street, London, E.C.' address according to Grace's guide to British industrial industry; they worked on 'Lithographic and Letterpress Printers'. 1887 Registered as a Limited Company. Count Moïse de Camondo, (1860-1935), was an Ottoman Empire-born French banker and art collector. He was a member of the prominent Camondo family. As a child, Camondo moved with his family from their home in Constantinople, Ottoman Empire, to Paris around 1869, where he grew up and continued the career of his father, Nissim de Camondo (1830-1889), as a banker. He was born into a Sephardic Jewish family that owned one of the largest banks in the Ottoman Empire, established in France since 1869. Starting in 1911, he completely rebuilt the family's Parisian mansion on the Parc Monceau in order to house his collection of 18th-century French furniture and artwork. Working closely with the architect René Sergent, he created a palatial home conforming to certain 18th-century traditions, even planning the room dimensions to match exactly the objects in his collection. The entryway is inspired by the Petit Trianon of Versailles. The home includes a kosher kitchen with separate sections for meat and dairy. The dining room includes a beautifully-carved green marble fountain in the shape of a shell, with a dolphin spigot for the ritual washing of hands before eating a meal. Some highlights of his collection include a French silver service that had been ordered by Russian Empress Catherine the Great, a set of Buffon porcelain (with exact reproductions of ornithological drawings) from the Sèvres manufacturer, and perhaps the only existing complete set of Gobelin royal tapestry sketches. He married Irène Cahen d'Anvers, daughter of Louis Cahen d'Anvers, in 1891. They separated in August 1897 after her affair with de Camondo's stable master, Count Charles Sampieri, whom she would later marry and divorce. The children, Nissim and Beatrice, remained with de Camondo. The mansion was completed in 1914, but his son did not reside there very long, as he rejoined the French Army to fight in The Great War. It had been de Camondo's great hope that his son, whom he adored, would take over the family empire. Following Nissim's death in 1917, de Camondo closed all banking activities. He largely withdrew from society and devoted himself primarily to his collection and to hosting dinners for a club of gourmets at regular intervals. Camondo died in 1935, and the museum opened the following year. He donated the home to Paris's Decorative Arts society as a museum (Musée Nissim de Camondo) in honor of the loss of his son Nissim in World War I. In addition to the collection, the meticulously-restored service areas, elevator, and woodwork of the mansion are noteworthy. During the German occupation of France during World War II, his daughter Béatrice, his son-of-law Léon Reinach, and their children (Fanny and Bertrand) were deported from France and died in the Auschwitz concentration camp. As a result, the de Camondo family died out.

[MT INDEPENDENTA INCIDENT].
[MIDDLE EAST / 1979 MT INDEPENDENTA INCIDENT] Original 9 photographs showing the Independenta's burning after the explosion in 1979, Haydarpasa Port offshore.
Very Good Turkish Original 9 photographs. All photo sizes: 18x13 cm. A very good photograph collection. A photograph collection showing the Independenta's burning after the explosion in 1979, Haydarpasa Port offshore. The photos are taken from the land. MT Independenta was a large Romanian crude oil carrier. She collided in 1979 with a Greek freighter at the southern entrance of the Bosphorus, Turkey, and exploded. She caught fire and was grounded. Almost all of the tanker's crew members died. The wreck of the Independenta burned for weeks, causing heavy air and sea pollution in the Istanbul area and the Sea of Marmara. By mid-November 1979, the Independen?a, carrying 94,000 tons (714,760 barrels) of crude oil from Es Sider, Libya to Constan?a, Romania dropped anchor about 4 nautical miles off the Haydarpasa Breakwater at the southern entrance of the Istanbul Strait. She was waiting for a maritime pilot for the guidance of her 19th passage through the strait. The Greek cargo ship M/V Evriali (10,000 DWT) was transporting 7,400 tons of steel from Mariupol, Ukraine (formerly Zhdanov) to Italy, and had already passed the strait southwards. Early in the morning of 15 November at 04:35, Evriali collided with Independenta hitting the Romanian ship between the number 3 and 4 tanks, on the starboard side. The Turkish pilot that helped Evriali navigate the strait, Dincer Sumerkan, got off the Greek ship earlier, instructing them to follow a course at 260 degrees right, however, the Greek cargo ship took a course of 160 degrees left. The sparks from the collision at 04:35 caused a big explosion on Independenta followed 3 minutes later by another explosion. A third explosion occurred at 04:47. The Independenta ran aground half a mile off the Port of Haydarpasa. 43 members of the tanker's crew lost their lives; only 3 survived the catastrophic accident. Almost all the victims lost their lives in the water when burning oil on the surface was driven towards the shore by the wind; the sailors who survived had jumped on the other side of the ship, against the wind, being later rescued by boats. The Turkish Navy immediately attempted to extinguish the fire. However, these efforts had to be abandoned due to the intensity of the fire. The Director of the Sea of Marmara District took over the spill on 19 November, and the Navy withdrew. The Greek captain of the Evriali, Alekos Adamopulos (29 years old at that time), was sentenced to 20 months in jail. The difference of time between his arrest and the 20 months, was converted into an $850 fine. The Istanbul Strait remained closed for weeks. The wreck affected the area for some years until it was broken up and salvaged to a shipyard in Tuzla. (Wikipedia).
