Original printed wrappers. 4to. 11 pages. 30cm. In German. Compact tabloid format internally, with broadsheet printed covers. Title translates as The Curse and Inescapable Destiny of the Jews. Written by Kurt Reiss, under the pseudonym Abraham Cohen. This Antisemitic, millenarian polemic situates itself alongside the numerous Antisemitic conspiracy theories clinging to the fringes of early Nazi propaganda, a kind of millenialist Nazi-Zionism that calls for the Jews to be returned to Palestine to bring about the second coming of Jesus. In this piece, Reiss celebrates Hitler as the latest confirmation that the Jews are the chosen people, and sees Hitler as a guide and shepherd that will prevent the assimilation of the Jewish people and help bring them to Palestine to facilitate the final salvation. Kurt [Reiss] left school at the age of 15 and developed an interest in religion. He believed that the Jews should recognize Jesus Christ as their Messiah. He also attempted to secure patents for mechanical inventions. Kurt convinced the family to emigrate to Canada. According to a family member Kurt suffered from mental illness. He was unable to work and spent his days writing notes about his daily activities and his religious ideas. His sister Lola always took care of him. In New York, She was founder of the Drama Recital Club, and a member of the New York Drama League, the New York League of American Pen Women, the Council of Jewish Women, and the Temple Emmanu-El Women's Auxiliary (Wikipedia). Ibriah, a Cincinnati organization committed to Hebrew conversation and literature, was, not surprisingly, also a center of Zionist support, despite the Reforms dominance in local Jewish thought and culture. Here the host a gathering to meet leading modern Hebrew writer Nahum Sokolov. Joan Friedman notes in a 2006 article on Solomon Freedhof at HUC during the period that, The hot issue of the day during Freehofs student and early faculty years at the College was Zionism. It was discussed in the Literary Society and everywhere else on campus. During the 19111912 academic year, Silver and Professor Neumark had founded a Hebrew-speaking club, Ibriah, of which Marcus was a member, though he does not mention whether Freehof was also. The CCAR had taken a firm stance against Zionism as early as 1897, although individual rabbis were outspoken Zionists.104 Kohler was a committed anti-Zionist. An extensive collection of correspondance and dicussions regarding the status and persecution of the Jews of Russia and the attempts by American Government Officials to intervene in specific cases of persecution of the Jews. President Arthur's support for the Jews of Russia, was even related to the founding of the Red Cross. As Denis Brian notes in "The Elected and the Chosen: Why American Presidents Have Supported Jews and Israel" (Jerusalem, 2012) "on May 2, 1882, President Arthur sent this special message to Congress: 'In answer to the resolution of the House of Representatives...calling for correspondence respecting the condition of Israeites in Russia' [ie. this publication]....Soon after, Arthur had a new secreteary of state, Frederick Frelinghuysen, who stepped up the diplomatic pressure on Russia. He wrote to the American representative there, 'The prejudice of race and creed have in our days given way to the claims of our common humanity. The people of the United States have heard with great respect the suffering of the Jewish Russians....It can scarecely be doubted that much has been done which a humane person must condemn....' Mean while, in America, a group of vounteers led by Cara Barton met in the Washington, DC, home of Adolphus Solomon, a Jewish American printer and philantropist with special concern for Russian Jews....In Solomon's home the group drew up the constitution for a new organization called the American Red Cross. They elected Barton president, and Solomon vice president, a position he held for seven years. When in 1884 President Arthur was asked to appoint the first American delegates to the International Congress of the Red Cross in Geneva, he chose Barton and Solomon....Adolpus Solomon also helped to create the American Jewish Historical Society" (pp. 133-134). Gotthard Deutsch (1859 1921) , also spelled Gottard Deutsch, was a scholar of Jewish history
In 1891, at the invitation of Isaac Mayer Wise, Deutsch moved to the United States to accept the chair of Jewish history and philosophy at Hebrew Union College in Cincinnati. After eleven years of teaching there, he was appointed dean. In February 1903, after the death of Moses Mielziner, he was designated acting president of the college, a position he held until October of the same year
One of the turning points in Deutsch's life came with the United States's entry into World War I. His lifelong love for Germany had led Deutsch to support Woodrow Wilson's neutrality while aligning himself with the People's Council of America for Democracy and Peace. In the tide of anti-German hysteria, Deutsch found himself alone and ostracized. He spoke out singularly, sometimes bitterly, against his adopted country's wartime role. On 5 October 1917, federal agents and local detectives raided the council's headquarters. (Wikipedia, 2017) OCLC lists just 2 copies worldwide (HUC, NLI) , and none on the East Coast. 1st edition, original cloth, 8vo. 806 pages, illustrations throughout. In Yiddish with a Spanish title page. German soldiers first passed through Ratne at the end of June 1941, but Nazi rule was established in the town only in July. Between the retreat of the Soviets and the arrival of German security forces and administrators, locals plundered Jewish homes and businesses. Shortly after the Germans arrived, they shot 27 Jews and 30 Soviet prisoners of war. Acting through the Ukrainian police, they also introduced an array of anti-Jewish measures: Jews had to wear identifying armbands (later yellow patches) , comply with a curfew, hand in valuables, including ritual objects, and provide forced labor. It was forbidden for Jews to speak to Ukrainians. As early as July 1941, Jews from the countryside were already being relocated to Ratne. In the spring of 1942, a ghetto was set up there. After a partisan raid on Ratne in June 1942, the Germans shot more than 110 Jews, along with a few Ukrainians. The Destruction of the Jewish Community. In August, the Germans recruited Ukrainian peasants from Prokhid to dig pits at a nearby sand lot. On August 26, the ghetto was liquidated by a unit from the Gestapo outpost in Brest supported by the local German Gendarmerie post and Ukrainian auxiliary police force. Although several hundred Jews fled before they could be taken to Prokhid. Many others hid in the ghetto. Most were eventually caught and murdered as well. Between 1, 300 and 1, 500 Jewish men, women, and children were killed during this operation. A few dozen skilled laborers were left alive and employed in a workshop. They were shot in February 1943.
