He taught Semitics at Johns Hopkins in the 1880s and early 1890s and also worked as a librarian for the Smithsonian. He was one of the founders of the Jewish Publication Society of America and the American Jewish Historical Society, of which he was president for over 20 years. A Holocaust History in sixteen woodcuts done in 1945 by Miklós Adler, a Hungarian survivor. Edited, with an introduction and commentary, by Saul Touster. Contains facsimiles of the woodcuts and a separately bound volume with Professor Touster's commentary, bound in a folio box. Two pockets to inside covers. One contains book with introduction and woodcuts, captions in English, Hungarian, and Hebrew, vis-a-vis descriptive text, the other 16 woodcuts on seperate leaves. Series depicts plight of Jewish people during the Third Reich starting with the yellow star to be sewn onto clothes, transport to Ghettos and eventually to concentration camps; selection for and description of various work units, debasing scenes suffered at the hands of the Nazis, a woodut showing row of dead, closing with a woodcut showing smokestacks with "souls ascending". Mikos Adler was an art teacher in Debrecen, Hungary. Sometime in 1944, Adler and his family were loaded onto a transport for Auchwitz, but their train was diverted to Lager 15 in Vienna, and then to Theresienstadt, where they were liberated by the Soviet army on May 8, 1945. Adret (1235-1310) was a Spanish rabbi and one of the foremost Jewish scholars of his time, whose influence has remained to this day. Adret belonged to a well-to-do family of Barcelona where he lived all his life. His principal teacher was Jonah b. Abraham Gerondi and Adret always refers to him as my teacher. He also studied under Nahmanides, being considered one of his outstanding students and principal exponent of his school in the interpretation of the Talmud. While still young, Adret engaged extensively in financial transactions, and the king of Aragon was among his debtors. After a few years he withdrew from business and accepted the position of rabbi in Barcelona, which he held for more than 40 years. Adret was recognized as the leading figure in Spanish Jewry before he was 40 and his opinions carried weight far beyond the frontiers of Spain. He was a man of great accomplishments, strong character, and incorruptible judgment. Not long after he entered upon his office as rabbi, he vigorously defended an orphan against leading court Jews and the powerful Christian nobles who supported them. Yet, he was a humble man, with a warm, sensitive heart. Many of his responsa deal with the clarification of problematic biblical passages, and some of them touch on questions of philosophy and the fundamentals of religion
Collections of the responsa of Adret are extant today. They pose a difficult literary problem. Beside his responsa and novellae, Adret wrote two legal manuals. The more important, Torat ha-Bayit, deals with most of the ritual observances, such as ritual slaughter, forbidden foods, gentile wine, and the laws of niddah, together with Shaar ha-Mayim- laws of mikveh. Adrets Avodat ha-Kodesh on the laws of the Sabbath and the festivals is also extant. It appeared in two versions, one complete and the other abridged. The former has not yet been published, while the latter was published in Venice in 1602. He also wrote Piskei Hallah on the laws relating to Hallah. The changes in rabbinic study in Spain started by Nahmanides were finally effected by Adret. His responsa have at all times been highly influential and were a major source of the Shul? An Arukh (Assaf and Derovan in EJ, 2007) . OCLC lists 1 copy worldwide (Hebrew Union) . Tearing to outer covers, chipping to edges and corners. Hinge repair. Outer covers not attached to binding. First edition. Period boards. 8vo. 76 pages, 22 cm. In Hebrew. Title translates to Hidden Desire: Responsa of the Geonim. 166 previously unknown responsa from the Geonim and the novellae of R. Solomon ben Abraham Adret (Rashba) on tractate Yevamot. The title page describes it as the responsa of the geonim, the Torah of the rishonim (early sages) , elder rabbis, early geonim, that were concealed and secreted for many hundreds of years in ancient manuscripts and from heaven it came to them to bring that which was unknown to light. The geonim were recognized by the Jews as the highest authority of instruction from the end of the sixth century or somewhat later to the middle of the 11th. Also worth noting is that this responsa was brought to the publishing house by then Chief Rabbi of Chabad and cousin to Rebbe Menachem Mendel Schneerson. SUBJECTS: Responsa -- To 1040.
