Benjaminson, Abraham Loeb
MILHAMAH BE-SHALOM: VIKUAH BEN SHENE OHAVIM YEHUDI VE-NOTSRI BE-INYENE HA-DAT
1st edition. Period boards. 8vo. 92 pages, 22 cm. In Hebrew. Title translates to "War for Peace: A Debate Between Two Jewish and Christian Lovers on the Matter of Religion. " A turn of the Century defense against Christian missionaries. In a contemporary review entitled "Neo-Hebraic Literature in America" (New York, 1900) , Bernard Drachman noted that Milhamah Be-Shalom "is a defense of Judaism against the attacks of Christian missionaries, particularly against the culumnies of McCall in his notorious Netibot Olam, and a sharp criticism on the New Testament. The work is in the form of a debate between Peter, a Christian priest, who represents Christianity, and Abraham, a Jewish Rabbi and preacher, who defends the cause of Judaism. Its usefulness as furnishing Hebrew reading Jews with arguments by which to refute the persistent proselytizing efforts of Christian missionaries is very great. It is written in a pure, clear and simple style which renders its perusal easy for any one [sic] acquainted with Hebrew. " Singerman 5131. For more on Benjaminson, see Yehuda Friedlander's "The Writings Of Abraham Loeb Benjaminson" (Harvard, 1994) . SUBJECTS: Judaism - Apologetic works. Disputations - Jewish-Christian. OCLC lists 11 copies worldwide (OCLC: 745181238) . Ex-library with usual markings. Light age staining in margins. Very Good Condition (AMR-56-21-BZBB)

Benn, [Bencjon]
62 PSAUMES ET VERSETS DE LA BIBLE [with additional original color pencil drawing laid in]
Folding Case. Large Folio. Sixty-two illustrated plates. 44 cm. Nr 289 of a deluxe edition of 2000 copies. First edition. With additional original full-size drawing in 3 colors, with colored pencil, of doves and flowers, with inscription in Hebrew and signed. Housed in original folding-case, loose as issued, original colored pictorial stiff wrappers. Title translates as: 62 Psalms and Verses of the Bible. In French. Preface by Jules Romains. The artist Benn was a renowned Jewish painter who drew inspiration from the Bible and expressed his spiritual connection to it in a body of self-contained and highly integrated work, which was published under the title 62 Psaumes et versets de la Bible. When the Nazis entered Paris, Benns worst premonitions were realized. He was rounded up together with other East European Jews and interned in a holding camp, whose inmates were ultimately destined for a concentration camp in Germany. He was held in that camp for a month, and during that time he sketched the faces of his co-internees and their surroundings. He fell into a deep depression, lost weight, and would probably have died had it not been for the efforts of his wife and friends who managed to smuggle him out of the camp. Arrangements were made to hide the couple in the basement of an apartment house in Paris. Benn and his wife remained there in hiding for the duration of the war. During his twenty six months of confinement, Benn completed a series of sixty two drawings, based on selected psalms and verses of the Bible. The remarkable feature of this body of work is that it represents a radical departure in style from of his other work, and that style, while continuing to evolve after the war, remained exclusively associated with biblical themes. He continued to use biblical themes as subject matter (e. G. , Song of Songs) , and this particular style sets these works quite apart from the other figurative and representational work he did simultaneously. The drawings and the canvasses were critically acclaimed, and the artist was urged to make the works more accessible. In order to accommodate the demand for his biblically inspired work Benn agreed to have the sixty two drawings and paintings reproduced in the form of an album, which was published in 1960 under the title, 62 Psaumes et Versets de la Bible. The publication was issued in a limited edition of 2, 000 copies. The album was prefaced by the French writer Jules Roman, of the Academie Française. (Art of Benn) Subjects: Bible. O.T. - Illustrations. Bible. O.T. Psalms - Illustrations. Bible. A.T. - Illustrations. OCLC lists 14 copies. Folding case has tear at crown of spine, otherwise Very Good. Illustrated plates are colorful, bright and clean. Very Good condition. (SPEC-36-10)

Benn; Lo Duca
BEN [BENN]
First edition. Original stiff wrappers. 8vo. 67, [3] pages. 23 cm. A collection of 52 paintings and illustrations by the artist Benn; illustrated reproductions of his still lifes and portraitures printed in color and black and white; with an essay on the artist written by the film critic Joseph Marie Lo Duca (one of the cofounders of the French Nouvelle Vague journal Cahiers du Cinema) , printed with historiated initials. Benn (Benzion Rabinovich; 19051989) , painter and graphic artist. Benn was born in Bialystok, Poland, and finished the Hebrew gymnasium there, where he later started his education in art at the private studios of local artists. He also studied at the Academy of Arts in Warsaw. He made his debut in 1927 with his first solo exhibition, shown first in Bialystok and then in Warsaw. During this period, he designed the typography for collections of Yiddish poetry. In Bialystok, his native town, he became a leading figure in local cultural life. He was among the founders of the modernist group 3F (Forma-Farba-Faktura) , where most of the members were Jewish artists. In 1928, he organized the first Autumn Salon for Bialystok and Vilna artists. In 192629, he designed the scenery for the performances of several Yiddish theater companies in Bialystok. In 1929, the Bialystok municipality awarded him a scholarship for a trip to Paris. On the eve of his departure, Benn arranged a farewell solo exhibition that was later shown in Warsaw with the assistance of the Jewish Society for Encouragement of Artists. In Paris, he studied with Fernand Leger. From 1932, Benn regularly exhibited in Paris art salons. His works were highly praised by critics and won public recognition. Six one-man shows in the 1930s at private art galleries in Paris are yet another indication of his success. During this period, he was also active in book design. During the German occupation of France, Benn went into hiding. However, not long before the end of the occupation, he was finally seized by the Gestapo and deported to the Drancy concentration camp. By sheer luck, he not only survived but also escaped further deportation to Auschwitz. In 1945, Benn returned to Paris. In the post-war years, having rejected the cubist and expressionistic techniques that had so strongly attracted him in the 1920s and 1930s, Benn crystallized his individual manner based on an organic combination of metaphysical painting techniques and surrealism. From the 1950s through the 1970s, while mainly active in painting, he also engaged in book design and, among other works in this field, executed a series of illustrations for The Song of Songs (1950, 1974) and other books of the Bible (1948, 1954, 1971) , as well as for an edition of Chad Gadya (1956) . In these years, he had numerous oneman shows in France and other West European countries as well as in Canada and Israel. (EJ 2007) Subjects: Artists - France. Bildband. OCLC lists 19 copies worldwide. Backstrip repaired and covers browning. Internally Very Good. Good condition. (ART-18-11A)

BENSOUSSAN GEORGES
IL SIONISMO. UNA STORIA POLITICA E INTELLETTUALE 1860 - 1940 (2 VOLUMI)
2 volumi, 8vo, leg. edit. pp.1401, sovracoperta in cofanertto . "Sionista. (Dall'Introduzione)
