They wished to promote the strict keeping of their faith, to introduce less formal worship with time set aside for explanations and instruction, without a permanent leader, and with no distinctions made among the members, and to conduct services according to German and Polish minhag [custom]. The "Dreyfus Affair" was a political scandal which divided France during the 1890s and early 1900s. It involved the wrongful conviction for treason of a promising young French artillery officer of Jewish faith, Captain Alfred Dreyfus, and the political and judicial scandal that followed until his full rehabilitation.
