Bacchus was the son of Jupiter and Semele. See the note on v. 13. of ode 5. supra. 12. 13. There is much variety in these and the subsequent lines as given by the different editors and commentators. Here I have followed the text of Barnes and M. Dacier. --Baxter thinks that the words Bokx Xpcura W and awawrt were marginal annotations which crept into the text. He also reads uvarmff instead of uwmje and translates it by nuptias saying that the poet wished to have a marriage represented on his bowl. Madame Dacier says that the poet ealls Bacchus nwrrti vaxaros on account of his having given the use of wine to man: for iworrji sometimes signifies initiator initiateur introducteur or introducer. --Maittaire remarks that pwmjj is the same as uiarayuyos in Dion. Areop. and refers to the Thesaurus of Stephens: ho adds that vaiia is used for wine in an epigram and again refers to the Thesaurus. --Regnier makes no change but supposes that the word eara is understood; and proposes fuidTis yafiaros tora ri Kimpts. --Fabcr merely changing an accent reads--uvarn vafmros jj Kwrpis --which Maittaire prefers and says that it may not be improperly said of Venus if we consider the words of Horace 1. 2. od. 7. v. 25-G. Quern Venus arbitrum Dicit bibendi f--To whom shall Beautys queen assign To reign the monarch of our wine V La Fosse agrees with Faber saying it is only necessary to change the accent so as --instead of 7 as an article before Kinrpu --to read p the third person of the subjunctive of the verb tiftl: --and then the meaning will be--Let Venut be mistress of the ceremonies. Maittaire in his 2d edition following Gruterus gives this note on worn vaparos 77 Kwrpis: --Iraescs fluxio. . . This item ships from La VergneTN. RareBooksClub‎

J Pluck it not; the flowry gem Unwilling quits its parent stem; Round I read with Barnes as more elegant Creek woisiTt istccv Stefbems vroSoi-tra. irupizt cannot so properly precede the preposition l in the following verse. J This passage has been learnedly discussed by Mons. Dacier as quoted by his Lady. The Critic thinks it resers to a whimsical custom arisng from the superstition of the ancients who it seems in order to form an adequate judgment of their future success in love took a poppy and tried whether by striking their hand or elbow against it any noise ensued; if there did they depended upon a happy issue if not they of consequence were reduced to despair. The misfortune is that although this were actually a custom among those ridiculous zealots it has no connection with the present thought the very words of which are wrested by Mid. Dacier in-favor of her husbands hypothesis. Add to Round the feast of fragrance rove But gently touch--the Rose of love. Mid to this the remark of De Paww that their writers when they treated this prophetic ceremony of love mentioned only the Lilly the Poppy and the Anemone but never the Rose. However I know not how any of The flowri could be conclusive in the experiment unless entirely different from their namefakes of modern construction. The reader will observe that the version runs contrad. ctory to the fense of the whole tribe of commentator which was owing to the editors being struck with the expressive contrast thereby made to the verses immediately foregoing to which those in question are responsive. Excerpt: . . . a blush oerspread his lovely face Which modesty imprints; Let it have every youthful grace And be downy as the quince. His rosy lips O how could I Portray--mere words would fail; But let them soft persuasion sigh And fiower-like sweets exhale. Well were it if the picture had A speaking silence; now Of Adon the neck and shoulders add And Hermes hands bestow. I shall say nothing of his feet; What price thou wilt demand. Take Apollos statue and from it With what skill thou canst command Depict the charms whereof I shall Not speak and fame will follow; 1 Here follows in the original a parum-pudici passage which has been left untranslated. Shouldst go to Samos none could tell Bathyllus from Apollo. 1 There was a famous temple of Apollo at Samos. Polycrates had a statue erected there to the beautiful youth Bathyllus which represented him in the guise of Apollo playing on the lyre. Ode XXII. is addressed to him and he is mentioned in Odes IX. and XVII. Horace Epode XIV. thus refers to the friendship of Anacreon and Ba. thyllus: --Non aliter Samio dicunt arsine Bathyllo Anacreonta. Teium Qui persaepe cava testudine flevit amorem Non elaboratum ad pedem. Tis said the tuneful Teian bard admired Bathyllus and with genial ardour fired Sang to his lyre with tender truth Sweet praises of the Samian youth. ODE XXX THE VOLUNTARY CAPTIVE ONcE Love by the fair Muses being caught Flower-bound to Beauty was brought. Venus without her darling ill at ease Now seeks him to release With ransoms; but endeavours all are vain For Eros hugs his chain. From Beauty parted hell no longer dwell He loves his serfdom well. 1 1 This ode is very fine and the fiction extremely ingenious. I believe that Anacreon would. . . This item ships from La VergneTN. Excerpt: . . . than he would have done elsewhere in twice the time. He became expert 349 B at making the different knots and splices till he knew them all from a bowline knot to a Turks Head or a Matthew-walker almost as well as Harrison did himself. He could also box the compass he could take the tiller in ordinary weather he could heave the lead and he could do any boys work aloft which a vessel like the schooner required. It was natural to suppose that being thrown so much together Alf would coax many a yar n out of Harrison; but strange to say the latter objected to talk about his life at sea. A few dark admissions he made of rough experiences and wild adventure leading Alf to infer that he had been much on board South Sea whalers and there was no doubt he had had to do with the slave-trade on the dark Guinea coast; and Alf fancied he did not even deny to being implicated with pirates and smugglers at least he had seen a good deal of blood shed in his day. His early life however he would talk of freely; indeed he never seemed to tire of the subject but with great delight would recall reminiscences of those days of his boyhood when he and his sister Nancy Gathered wild-flowers in the dell. He had left home when a mere boy scarcely Alfs age and had been at sea ever since sailing from one foreign port to another; but never from the time he had left it had he ever paid a visit to his friends nor would he give a reason for his behaviour. A sudden notion had at last come into his head to look up the old folks. He had been in hospital at Portsmouth and had time to think of them; but on his arrival at the little village where he was born poor Harrison discovered they were all. . . Produced by Giambatista Bodoni 1740-1813 the most celebrated European printer of his era this remarkable piece of work is called "magnificent" by Brooks and Dibdin says that a "more elegant and exquisitely finished production . . . cannot be conceived." The appearance of the page printed only with capitals and offered here in a copy with vast margins is simply as stately and powerful as one could ever hope for. Bodoni was not only a great printer but also the most important type designer and punchcutter in Italy during his day. He was responsible for some of the most graceful and immaculate books to be printed during the end of the 18th and beginning of the 19th century and the present item is certainly to be counted among his most beautiful productions. Our copy has a distinguished provenance. Charles C. Kalbfleisch was a discriminating American collector whose collection featured a great many beautiful bindings and who was known for choosing only the finest copies available. ‎ANAKREON UND SAPPHO.‎

‎F. Bohn Lubeck: 1800 1800. pp 186 Engraved title page. Damp stained. Original boards. Spine taped. Sappho's poetry centers on passion and love for various personages and genders. The word "lesbian" derives from the name of the island of her birth Lesbos; her name is also the origin of its less common synonym sapphic. The narrators of many of her poems speak of infatuations and love sometimes requited sometimes not for various women but descriptions of physical acts between women are few. First edition of this influential German translation. SMALL BOX 8. 1st Edition. Hardcover. Very Good. F. Bohn, Lubeck: 1800 Hardcover‎
