In any case that kind of a relation clearly indicates Giotto's greatness. The only person who has realized his greatness in our country is the deceased Bedrettin Cömert and the most significant step he has taken about this issue is a book named 'Giotto's art'. No I'm going to comment on the twenty-five paintings which largely associated with Giotto in Assisi...".

CANAN SENOL.
Canan: Behind Mount Qaf.= Canan: Kaf Dagi'nin ardinda. [Exhibition catalogue]. Curated by Süreyyya Evren.
New English Paperback. 4to. (27 x 21 cm). In English and Turkish. 142 p., color ills. The exhibition is named after the legendary Mount Qaf of Arabic and Persian cosmology and includes works produced in various media, such as sculpture, photography, print, embroidery, video, installation, and miniature. "Behind Mount Qaf" proposes a reading of the artist's practice through the themes of Heaven, Purgatory and Hell. CANAN's new works focus on dualisms such as light/shadow, good/bad, internal/external, reality/imaginary, lightness/darkness, and tackle the repressed aspects of the human psyche in the form of supernatural creatures, the jinn and archetypical figures, culminating in a multidimensional, mystical, symbolic, and rather enticing universe.

Nazimî Yaver Yenal: Imaginary world of a paper architect.= Nazimî Yaver Yenal: Bir kagit mimarinin hayali dünyasi.
New English Paperback. Large 8vo. In English and Turkish. 240 p. This exhibition celebrates architect Nazimî Yaver Yenal (1904-1987), a unique representative of 20th century Turkish architecture. Based on his exceptional archive that reflects his nearly fifty-year-long career, the exhibition brings light to a typical representative of the Republic generation that epitomized idealist principles. Having spent his adolescence in the final years of the Ottoman Empire, Yenal was trained at the Sanayi-i Nefise Mektebi (School of Fine Arts), particularly under the influence of his teacher Giulio Mongeri's notion of eclecticism and graduated valedictorian from the school. Shaped by the consecutive competitions he won, his career evolved through the experience he gained in Paris and Berlin, where he was sent on a state scholarship, extended as part of the cultural policies of the early Republic years. He thrived and matured during the years he spent as an instructor at the Academy of Fine Arts, as he grew close to a handful of avant-garde German architects that ended up together in Istanbul through extraordinary political conditions. Described in his letters as being "much ahead" by Sedad Hakki Eldem even in his student years, Yenal had talent beyond question and a career in architecture that set off quite successfully at first. Despite all that, virtually none of his designs were actually constructed. His unexecuted designs and the hopes he had created relate a powerful tale along with the disappointments and the reasons behind never being able to bring his creations to fruition. Eventually falling out of the official architectural discourse and forgotten in time, Yenal created for himself an alternative realm of architectural production comprised solely of drawings. The massive archive he created of his drawings was first preserved at his private room at the Academy and later in his house following retirement. After his death, it was dispersed. Nazimî Yaver's depictive fantasies and drawings are in flawless command of both the repertoire of classical architecture and modernism; they correspond to imaginary designs entirely free of the factors associated with construction and derive their strength from this freedom. His unconstructed and unshared designs privatize architecture, a public domain of art. Shaped by imagination, the Yenal aesthetic is inevitably defined in connection with personal codes. In providing a real understanding of Yenal's drawings, this subjectivity forces us to read not only into the designs, but their creator as well. With his avant-garde sketches remaining only on paper, Nazimî Yaver Yenal is perhaps the most important "paper architect" of Turkish architecture from the Republic era.

ASLI ÇAVUSOGLU.
Asli Çavusoglu. Mercury in retrograde.= Merkür geriliyor. Edited by Iz Öztat, Süreyyya Evren.
New English Paperback. Demy 8vo. (22 x 15 cm). In English and Turkish. 96 p., 40 unnumbered color ills. Asli Çavusoglu. Mercury in retrograde.= Merkür geriliyor. Edited by Iz Öztat, Süreyyya Evren. The Contemporary Art Series of artists books, initiated by Art-ist publications, presents unique monographs of work by emerging artists who do not have a publication on their work yet. The series aims at documenting practices as they manifest and creating a space for evaluating each artist's practice through most of their works. The books published to date are Ahmet Ögüt: Informal Incidents (2008), followed by Bashir Borlakov: Fictional Reality (2009), Can Altay: Pigeons are People (2010) and A. Sener Özmen Book (2011). Mercury in Retrograde is the fifth book in the series, which focuses on Asli Çavusoglu's artistic production since 2004. In her works, Ash questions the audience's relationship with reality through her daring interventions in space and time. No matter what the topic is, her works reflect the process and the coincidences invoked by the artist that result in layered interpretations. In the universe that is presented in this book, linear relationships and narratives don't work. We can only perceive the works as a constellation of time/space compressions, which impact each other in multiple dimensions. You can imagine that an artist dealing with the fictional nature of historiography and placing herself at the center of experiences shaping her work would not let somebody else edit the narrative about her practice. The interpretations you will come across are some possibilities articulated from now and the same works might appear with completely different meanings in the future. In this book, you might be looking for a narrative of Ali Cavusoglu and her artistic practice but you might find something else.

HALIL AKDENIZ.
Halil Akdeniz: Cultural signs.= Kültür imleri. Text by Rifat Sahiner.
New English Original bdg. HC. 4to. (32 x 25 cm). In English and Turkish. 315 p., color ills. 500 copies were printed. Halil Akdeniz: Cultural signs.= Kültür imleri. Text by Rifat Sahiner. The art of Akdeniz follows an evolutionary line that appears rather difficult to categorize, the plastic concerns and conceptual structuration principles of which are based on a certain principle. The evolution renders visible the concept of a unique art in which meaning and problems of form are triggered by one another, and symbols, images, and signs are in constant motion, revealing new possibilities. Akdeniz¿s use of sign from the Anatolian Civilization, with which he has long been preccupied, indicates that the artist is concerned with capturing the life reigning over these lands through the letters in the Hittite, Hattian, Phrygian, and Greek alphabets as cultural codes. The geometry of Thales, the playfulness of Heraclitus, the oracle of Nietzsche are all there. In analyzing the art of Akdeniz, it can be argued briefly that the main concern of the artist is to acquire information from cultures, discover their genetic equivalents, and to create a new design principle by unearthing this information through a kind of temporal archaeology. Particularly from the early 1990s onwards, Akdeniz attributes a new function to the canvas and the frame: extending beyond the pictorial space, he enters a new experimental phase with a plethora of new materials. While this experimentation compels the artist to relentlessly seek new associations and ways of expression, it also allows him to think of the forms and symbols he has been using from the onset within new possibilities. This book can be characterized as a journey into the roots and developmental dynamics of Halil Akdeniz¿s art and thus can be assessed as a multi-directional thought platform on how it be can interpreted within the art procedures of the past and present.

SIMON HOUPT.
Kayip Eserler Müzesi: Sanat suçlarinin doruklari. [= Museum of the missing: The high stakes of art crimes]. Translated by Mine Haydaroglu. Preface by Julian Radcliffe.
Fine Turkish Original bdg. HC. 4to. (26 x 21 cm). Edition in Turkish. 192 p., color ills. Kayip Eserler Müzesi: Sanat suçlarinin doruklari. [= Museum of the missing: The high stakes of art crimes]. Translated by Mine Haydaroglu. Preface by Julian Radcliffe. The past few years have been tough on Edvard Munch. First the Norwegian Expressionist's iconic painting The Scream was stolen in 1994. Then it was recovered, and a different version was stolen in 2004. It seems that Munch is getting more than his fair share of attention from thieves, but he's not alone. These days, no artist?s work is safe. The international police agency, Interpol, currently lists as stolen more than twenty-five thousand works of art. This figure includes sculptures, furniture, clocks, and antiquities, as well as paintings. The number of paintings alone is staggering. Rembrandts, Renoirs, Van Goghs, Picassos. You could fill a museum. In Museum of the Missing, journalist Simon Houpt investigates the fascinating story of modern art theft. What started as looting of art treasures by invading armies, including the Nazis during World War II, has exploded into a sophisticated international operation. But grand art thefts are only part of this fascinating story. Houpt takes the reader into the backrooms of Scotland Yard, the FBI, and Interpol as crack art-recovery squads mount surveillance operations and elaborate stings. He also leads readers into a tangled underworld of money laundering, drugs, illegal arms trading, and terrorism?where the stakes for both sides are very high. The stakes for lovers of art are just as high. Many of the world's stolen masterpieces will probably not be recovered in the foreseeable future. Some may never be seen by the public again. Museum of the Missing offers an extraordinary glimpse of these lost treasures.

Edited by IPEK TÜRELI.
Retrospective: Aesthetics and art in the 20th century. [= 20. yüzyilda estetik ve sanat].
New English Paperback. 4to. (28 x 21 cm). Edition in English. [6], 135 p., b/w ills. Aesthetics and art in the 20th century. [= 20. yüzyilda estetik ve sanat]. Why this topic? Why now? SANART is the only association of aesthetics in Turkey. It has the mission of enthusing and building up a public for the raised awareness of issues related with aesthetics and art. For the past ten years now, it has carried this mission to the practical realm in Ankara, where it is based, through the organisation of symposia, exhibitions and publications. To coincide with the closure of the twentieth century, on its tenth year, SANART decided to re-evaluate the century in terms of various approaches to the field of aesthetics and art. Twelve participants, who were invited and whose texts are included in this book, were asked to bring forth specific issues within the general problematic of the twentieth century. The objective was more to do with understanding our concerns with the new century, while reflecting upon the previous one, than providing all encompassing accounts of historiography. Why the book? Publications are very important for SANART because as an association it seeks to maintain permanence in the cultural sphere of Turkey, and to achieve that permanence, although the continuity of temporal events help, it is essential to accumulate written material. All of the symposia that SANART has organised have been published or are pending publication. Because of the significance and timely relevance of the topic, this book aims to disseminate the ideas discussed in the symposium to a wider public than that of the locality of Ankara, to a world audience, which is why it has been decided to publish it in English. The programme of the symposium was arranged so that the first half focused on art work and aesthetics followed by the "avant-garde" discussion and the second half concentrated on issues of architecture, politics and aesthetics. In editing the book, the order of the sessions of the symposium was maintained so that the lines of thought that emerged during the Symposium can be followed in the Discussion and Afterwords without much difficulty. In an overview of the texts, it is possible to discern that one of the major shifts that occurred in art in the twentieth century was that with the advent of new technologies and the possibility of wider dissemination, artists vocally assumed new roles to themselves while simultaneously critics and theoreticians assigned new tasks to the domain of art.
