[Exhibition catalogue]. Edited by Eda Sezgin. Texts by Nussret Polat. Translated by Mehmet Emir Uslu. Catalogue of an exhibition at the Baksi Museum, 2017. "It was my uncle who went out first, later followed by my father. He had told me of their journey on horseback that took days. It was from him that I learned their stories of the passengers of Cetinkaya - Erzincan railway line. And this journey has not ended, ever since it began. As such, in my seventy-one years of life, I've mostly had stories of leaving. Perhaps that's why I chose to title my exhibition after a childhood memory of a thorn that pierced my foot, lodging itself there, giving me itches and later leaving me. Grand fissures in human lives also have grand reflections. Great oscillations, relocations, leaps through classes, or careers -these certainly affect life deeply. But in my life, as I look back upon it, it was not these memories but those who were the most innocent and most personal that left the greatest marks. This is why "The Thorn in My Foot" has collated the innocent, simple and idiosyncratic experiences of my intense and multifaceted life that wanted step forth. My childhood memories; my primary school diploma, which is a testament that I wasn't a very bright child; our supper table; our chair, which was the centre of daily lives with its covering drape; the fantastical shadows of fairytale heroes that wrought havoc in our household; the dissolute images of the sunlight, the silent guest of Baksi Museum, for whose foundation I worked tirelessly; tremendous forms crafted by master blacksmiths for centuries; and the Huy Kesen Tree, a gateway to hope - they all wanted to seep through the profound silence of time and reach out to the spectators. I too followed this path. With all these interrelated and even contradictory elements, I wanted to create a dreamy silence for the spectators, within the reality of Baksi. Is it possible to reconstruct innocence with today's language? Perhaps this exhibition is a purification act chosen by an artist, who has created to understand and speak about other lives, on the way to introspection and re-encounter.".

BARIS ACAR.
Selected writings from Ekphrasis: Passages between the visible and sayable.
New English Paperback. Cr .8vo. (20 x 15 cm). Edition in English. 310 p., ills. The articles in this book bear the traces of major discussions within the last twenty years of contemporary art in Turkey. Yet one can realize that the book goes far beyond this time span and geography. Moving back and forth on a so-called linear "historical progress", Ekphrasis looks into the meaning of similar concepts in different time and space, and invites readers to think them concurrently. This work, therefore, can be seen as temporally overlapping thoughts of a single person. Or as thoughts embedded in a certain time frame and their pushing and dragging each other within a mind questioning their organization Although they were not initially drafted for a predefined structure, the articles in this collection bear traces of a certain systematic reasoning in my point of view. This reasoning mainly deals with the search for a model of an aesthetic theory. Originally used in periodical publications and thus determined by the Zeitgeist, these articles can therefore easily form a network or a series of writing.

FATMA BUCAK.
Yet another story about the fall.= Düsüse dair bir baska hikaye daha. Curated by Ilkay Balic.
Fine English Paperback. Pbo. Dust wrapper. Small 4to. (26 x 19 cm). In English and Turkish. 88 p., color and b/w ills. Yet another story about the fall.= Düsüse dair bir baska hikaye daha. Curated by Ilkay Balic. Yet Another Story About the Fall" was Fatma Bucak's first solo exhibition in Turkey and presented new works by the artist along with a selection of her recent works (2012 and 2013). "The Fall" is a concept of central importance in the artist's production. Bucak problematises gender- and identity-based discrimination in her works, and revisits creation myths that regard man as superior to woman, therefore going back to the very beginning, the fall of man from heaven to earth. Bucak produced a new two-channel video installation especially for the exhibition at Arter. Shot at Tuz Gölü (the salt lake in Central Anatolia), the part entitled "And then God blessed them" brings together the female and male archetypes in a harsh and timeless part of nature for yet another confrontation. As in many of her other works, Bucak included her own body in this performance as an anonymous female figure, and was accompanied by a family member: her brother. In the second part entitled "Suggested place for you to see it", we see a group of women Bucak invited to take part in her work as "viewers". The comments of these 13 women become a performance in itself. Their real-time reactions meet the possible comments of the viewers in the exhibition space; and in this manner the installation proposed a contemplation on the position of the viewer in front of a work of art, and our ways of interpreting art. In her works, Fatma Bucak records actions she performs in meticulously designed settings in their entirety. These works, in which she simultaneously engages photography, video and performance, often deploy universal symbols (like in the reference here to The Last Supper which is assigned via the number of viewers). In this manner, Bucak reverses and re-enacts myths, religious parables and autobiographical narratives. The broken loaf of bread, which the artist then tries to sew back in "Blessed are you who come ¿ Solida Fundamenta" recalls the effort two different communities of the same land make to remain together, whereas the egg in the video "I was not able to prevent the fall" gives an uncanny sense about what is about to happen. In the work entitled "Omne Vivum Ex Ovo ¿ Nomologically possible, anyhow", installed at the entrance of the exhibition space, eggs are now being placed in concrete blocks. This 13-screen installation, first exhibited as a 5-screen installation in London at the Catlin Art Prize exhibition in 2013, and redesigned with the addition of music for the exhibition at Arter, returned to the themes of birth and hope associated with the image of the egg this time in association with urbanization. Videos at once both appearing and disappearing on the screens, point at an action with no clear beginning or end: a woman is constantly placing eggs in the holes of countless concrete blocks. Is she doing this so they can mature in their concrete nests and hatch when the time is right? Can life really emerge in this sullen landscape? And if it were to, what kind of creatures would step out from these eggs?

This is not alove song: Video art and pop music crossovers.= Bu bir ask sarkisi degil: Video sanati ve pop müzik iliskisi. [Exhibition catalogue].
New English Paperback. Pbo. 4to. (29 x 24 cm). In English and Turkish. [vi], 174 p., color and b/w ills. This is not alove song: Video art and pop music crossovers.= Bu bir ask sarkisi degil: Video sanati ve pop müzik iliskisi. [Exhibition catalogue]. "This is Not a Love Song: Video Art and Pop Music Crossovers" exhibition catalogue traces the genealogy of the relations between video art and pop music from the 1960s to today in which video art and pop music crossed roads. The catalogue features a substantial essay on video art and pop music relationship by curator F. Javier Panera Cuevas. The five chapters in the catalogue Art in Pop, Pop in Art, Hysteria and Religion, 'Non-Musicians' vs 'Non-Artists' Rock and Conceptual Art, Rock and Its Double: Pop Music as a 'Toolbox' and Dance Music Politics present a deeper look into the works in the exhibition. This is Not a Love Song suggests that the relations between music and the visual arts force us to reconsider another history of art, in which musicians and artists can position themselves either as actors in the hegemonic cultural system or as critical radicals whose traces, as Greil Marcus would say, can be as intense and as short-lived 'as a lipstick stain that is removed but leaves a profound imprint on our memory. Contents: Foreword.; This is Not a Love Song.; Art in Pop / Pop in Art.; Rock and Conceptual Art: 'Non-Musicians' vs 'Non-Artists'.; Rock and Its Double: Pop Music as a 'Toolbox'.; Dance Music Politics.; This is Not a Music Video. Memory and continuity. A selection from the Huma Kabakçi Collection.= Ani ve süreklilik. Huma Kabakçi Koleksiyonu'ndan bir seçki. [Exhibition catalogue].
New English Paperback. Pbo. 4to. (29 x 24 cm). In English and Turkish. 172 p., color ills. Memory and continuity. A selection from the Huma Kabakçi Collection.= Ani ve süreklilik. Huma Kabakçi Koleksiyonu'ndan bir seçki. [Exhibition catalogue]. A firm believer in the idea that a collection needs to be upheld at least by four generations and comparing this continuity to a relay race, Nahit Kabakc¿ began creating the Huma Kabakc¿ Collectionfrom the 1980s onwards. Today, the collection can be considered one of the most important and outstanding examples among the rare, consciously created, and long-lasting ones of its kind in Turkey. Apart from the logic of creating the Huma Kabakc¿ Collection, its evolution/growth over time, and its subjectivity, the exhibition was designed by keeping in mind its structure, reviewed and changed from time to time, with both objectivity and an art historical subjectivity. The catalogue, in that sense, brings to fore the common and diverging points of the two generations by which the collection has been sustained, through essays and works explanations.

FRANÇOIS AUGUSTE RODIN, (1840-1917).
Heykelin büyük ustasi Rodin Istanbul'da. [Exhibition catalogue].
New Turkish Paperback. Pbo. 4to. (27 x 24 cm). In Turkish. 400 p., color and b/w ills. The Sabanci University Sakip Sabanci Museum (SSM) hosts works by the French sculptor Auguste Rodin. The exhibition titled "The Master Sculptor Rodin in Istanbul" comprises 203 artworks selected from the collection of the Rodin Museum in Paris. The exhibition features the artist's bronze, plaster and marble sculptures, archival photographs, many drawings as well as some pieces from his collection of antique-style statues. Among nearly 100 sculptures that will be exhibited by SSM, which aims to promote wider public appreciation of the art of sculpture through the works of a renown master sculptor, are Rodin's masterpieces like The Thinker, The Kiss, The Burghers of Calais, The Monument to Balzac and The Walking Man. In addition to 18 statues and many other diassembled-assembled pieces drawn from The Gates of Hell, on which Rodin worked for long years but could not succeed to complete, 20 antique-style statues from Rodin's special collection are displayed at the exhibition. The bronze horse statue, after which the Horse Mansion was named and which has been saluting the Bosphorus since 1952, has been replaced with the Monument to Victor Hugo for the first time on the occasion of the exhibition. The statue of the renown poet, writer and thinker Victor Hugo made by Rodin is 1.85 m in height and 2.85 m in width. The photographs and sketches exhibited along with the other works enable visitors to track the artist's journey from his early works to his most famous masterpieces, and also shed light on the artist as a sketcher and a collector. The bilingual exhibition catalogue, which was prepared in Turkish and English, and whose texts were compiled by Samih Rifat, briefs on Rodin's life and artistic journey. The exhibition also proposes a set of events such as conferences, sculpture workshops and training programs for the kids. The exhibition, which is sponsored by Akbank and held in cooperation with the Rodin Museum in Paris and the French Cultural Center, will be open until September 3, 2006. The Artist - Born in Paris on November 12, 1840, François-Auguste-René Rodin discovered sculpture after he attended La Petite École, a special school for drawing and mathematics, and began to improve his drawing skill. He rented his first workshop in 1864 and met Rose Beuret, aged 20. In 1871, he exhibited his works in Belgium for the first time. In 1875, he started to work on a life-size human body, which he called The Bronze Age. In 1882, he sculptured the figures of Adam, Eve and the Thinker. After a while, he met Camille Claudel who soon became his mistress and biggest rival. In 1883, he created his Monument to Victor Hugo, and was commissioned by the City Council of Calais to sculpture the Monument to the Burghers of Calais two years later. The following year, he completed The Kiss. In 1888, the state commissioned The Kiss in marble for the Universal Exhibition. In 1889, he exhibited together with Claude Monet, the famous French painter and one of the founders of impressionism. In 1895, he bought the Villa des Brillants in Meudon and started to build up his collection of paintings and antique statues. The Rodin Pavilion was inaugurated at the Alma Square in Paris on the occasion of the Universal Exhibition of 1900, and a major exhibition of Rodin took place in Prague in 1902. In 1904, the first exhibition of a large-scale plaster of The Thinker took place at the International Society in London, then a bronze version of it at the Salon de Paris. The Thinker was placed in front of the Panthéon in 1906, which was later taken to Hôtel Biron (now the Rodin Museum) in 1908. The French National Assembly decided to establish the Rodin Museum in the Hôtel Brion in memory of the artist who handed over his collections to the state through three successive donations. On January 29, 1917, Rodin married Rose Beuret. Rose died on February 14, Valentine's Day. Die

Cilt 3: Grup sergileri - Fuarlar - Etkinlikler - Yolu kesisenler. Edited by Lütfiye Bozdag, Hande Özdilim Yildirim. Signed and inscribed by Mine Gülener. This book has been published for the reason of Mine Art Gallery's turning 30 years old. In this book, the activities carried out through 30 years by Mine Art Gallery which is one of the important stops in the roadmap of Turkish Art History has been documented. This book consists of the exhibitions, conversations, catalogue texts and posters of exhibitions, bulletins, texts that took place in the press, photographs and videos which are formed through 30 years, which is only a little part of Mine Art Gallery's archive. Certainly, we had to make a selection between the numbers of sources. I think we showed the required sensitivity to ensure the integrity of the book while selecting the quoted documents precisely and carefully. This book is different than the routine books of history of art galleries. Because, this book explains the history of Mine Art Gallery through the artists who supported them in their foundation. It is very certain that squeezing all 30 years of an art gallery in to a book is very difficult. As a matter of fact, we couldn't. We could just include the main documentation. For the upcoming periods, Mine Art Gallery is targeting to publish more books drawing upon their rich archive and also wants to share their archive with the art lovers. Mine Art Gallery with its roadmap that continues for these nonstop 30 years, not only formed their own documentation, but also has brought an important archive for the Turkish art history. Publication of this book will carry meaning as an important source for many researchers, art writers, art critics and for all the people who are interested in art, and also will be an encouraging force for the other art galleries. 500 copies were printed. A very heavy box set. Extra shipping fee will be requested.

Csontvary: An extraordinary master of Hungarian.= Macar resminin siradisi bir ustasi. Prep by Tibor Mester; Begu?m Akkoyunlu; Tania Bahar; Kemal Atakay, György Darabos.
New English Paperback. 4to. (29 x 24 cm). In English and Turkish. 89 p., color ills. Csontvary: An extraordinary master of Hungarian.= Macar resminin siradisi bir ustasi. Prep by Tibor Mester; Begu?m Akkoyunlu; Tania Bahar; Kemal Atakay, György Darabos. Csontváry was an artist of the turn of the century. The richness and complexity in his works cannot be characterised based on stylistic categories. Realistic observation, emphasis on the changing light, the decorative, orgiastic use of color characteristic of Post-Impressionism, the large-scale handling of form and the strong diffraction of the colors often appear simultaneously on the same canvas. The exhibition and accompanying catalogue invite us to discover the works of this extraordinary Hungarian artist, who wrote poetry with paintings that reflect his vision beyond the currents of the period, his unique colors, his symbolic narrative, and the "divine voice" he claims to have heard. Contents: Foreword: Jósef Sárkány.; Csontváry: Lojas Németh.; The sublimity of creation in Csontváry's art: Jósef Sárkány.; Autobiography.; Catalogue.; Biography.

Rembrandt and His Circle exhibition and catalogue was comprised of 99 drawings, 65 of which, including Rembrandt's, were a part of the famous Koenigs Collection. Acquired by the Rotterdam shipowner D.G. van Beuningen in 1940, the collection was then donated to the Boijmans Van Beuningen Museum, thereby ranking this institution as the second largest holder of Rembrandt drawings in Netherlands. Since 1988, however, these works of Rembrandt and his school had not been displayed collectively until the exhibition held in 2006 at the Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen. Rembrandt and His Circle welcomes us into the enchanted world of drawing -the purest and most basic form of painting- through the works of a great European master and his school. METIN AND, (1927-2008).
Bazaar painters: Ottoman figurative arts 2. Edited by Tülün Degirmenci, M. Sabri Koz.
New New English Original bdg. Dust wrapper. 4to. (29 x 23 cm). Edition in English. 248 p., color ills. Bazaar painters: Ottoman figurative arts 2. Edited by Tülün Degirmenci, M. Sabri Koz. Coining the phrase 'bazaar painters' in a 1985 article, Metin And enriched our art history terminology with a new concept as well as offer a glimpse into the world of these artists: how they worked, what they drew, where their works are today and how they contribute to our study of history of art and culture. He continued to promote and popularise their work through books and articles published until 2007, at times repeating earlier content as required. Bazaar painters and their work were not initially identified as a distinctive genre; Franz Taeschner, the first researcher to publish a selection, felt no need to refer to them as anything other than 'miniatures'. Challenging this trend, Metin And set about the immensely difficult task of obtaining pictures of bazaar painting albums from four corners of the globe in order to illustrate a prolific series of essays and books. The second volume of Ottoman Figurative Arts, Bazaar Painters consists of twelve articles published between 1985 and 2007, a comprehensive introduction by Tülün Degirmenci, and a concise album. The pictures and inscriptions Metin And chased enthusiastically all his life are but the echoing footsteps of a book, one that was either never written, or somehow got lost before it could be published.

Pierre Loti et les silhouettes de Hassan: Portraits avant La II. Constitution.= Pierre Loti ve Hasan silüetleri: II. Mesrutiyet öncesi portreler.
Fine French Original bdg. HC. 4to. In French and Turkish. 168 p., ills. Pierre Loti et les silhouettes de Hassan: Portraits avant La II. Constitution.= Pierre Loti ve Hasan silüetleri: II. Mesrutiyet öncesi portreler. The novelist Julien Viaud, famous for his nickname Pierre Loti, is a traveling maritime officer. At the end of the 19th century and the beginning of the 20th century, he makes seven trips to Istanbul. In 1903, at the age of 53, Pierre Loti takes over Le Vautour, the first station ship to the French Embassy in Istanbul, during his fifth trip to Turkey. In the same period, Hasan signed cartoons start to circulate in Istanbul. The person who is hiding under Hasan is actually Robert de Guiroye, a naval officer. This person was then assigned to the auxiliary ship "La Mouette" (Seagull) under the command of Pierre Loti. It is thought that this officer made drawings on this ship in the evening after having spent a long time in important social clubs such as Cercle d'Orient, Pera Palas Ballroom, Tepebasi Theater. Who is actually Hasan / Who is the real Hasan? The answer to this problem is in the exhibition and detailed catalog. Let's see if they can help bring Hasan's identity to light. The "Pierre Loti and Hasan Silhouettes" exhibition is made up of documents obtained as a result of years of research by numerous collections and valuable collector Sayen Erol Makzume, who has vast knowledge of Hasan's lithographs in the early 20th century. The exhibition contains texts, cartoons and in-depth information, and sheds light on the transition period of Turkey after the Second Constitutional Monarchy.

CAO FEI, NILBAR GÜRES, RAQS MEDIA COLLECTIVE et alli.
The time needs changing.= Zaman degismeli. [Exhibition catalogue]. Edited by Begüm Akkoyunlu-Ersöz, Yasemin Ülgen, Ulya Soney.
New English Paperback. Pbo. 4to. (28 x 24 cm). Bilingual in Turkish and English. 103 p., color ills. The Time Needs Changing exhibition questions our geo-politically controlled notions of time. The three artists in this show give alternatives to linear time, which is currently strictly enforced by the power structures under which we live. The works of Cao Fei, Nilbar Güres and the Raqs Media Collective release the shackles of time, and suggest alternative and parallel paths. The exhibition presents a thought-scape that draws from three different parts of the world; China, Turkey and India. The artists explore time through drawing, video, photography, installation and new media. Time is one of the many subjects addressed by the participants of the exhibition. Their works help us better understand our relations with ourselves, as well as those with the world around us. Nilbar Güres questions masculine linear time; Cao Fei offers us greater control in a world where real and virtual intersect; and the Raqs Media Collective liberates time itself in its works that associate memory with different experiences.
