Light wear to boards and spine; corners worn upper front corner partially chipped away. Some minor foxing and wear to text. Individual title pages to all but second part. A collection of dispatches sent by the Republican Generals Ortega Comonfort Berriozábal and others to the War Ministry in Mexico City during the siege of Puebla by the French during the Second Franco-Mexican War. Following the seizure of Veracruz in 1861 the French army advanced towards Mexico City before being halted by the Republican army at Puebla in May 1862. When the French army rejoined this portion of their campaign to conquer Mexico the following spring they encircled and besieged Puebla for two months before Mexican forces surrendered on May 16 with the capture of Mexico City quickly following. These works provided a contemporary synopsis of developments in Puebla to anxious officials and residents in Mexico City and were clearly printed in parts as the siege unfolded eighty miles to the east. The first and largest part provides dispatches from the city from early March until April 21; the final three parts provide updates to May 1 May 8 and May 22 as the situation became more dire and conclude with the final notice of the surrender of the Mexican garrison. Quite scarce; OCLC locates only six complete copies and we trace none in auction records over the past fifty years. Palau 314920 314922 314923. Sabin 81474 listing first two parts only. Mexico & Queretaro 1851. Thirty-three pamphlets variously paginated bound in three volumes. Contemporary half calf and marbled boards spines gilt. Front hinge of first volume cracking. Light scattered foxing and soiling but generally quite clean internally. Some light wear to several larger documents folded into volume. Manuscript index at rear of first and third volumes. Very good. Three volumes of pamphlets relating primarily to the military in Mexico compiled by a contemporary owner. Many of the items present here are official decrees. The first volume contains many decrees pertaining to laws passed June 13 1838. Among those are decrees relating to the establishment of an honor corps laws concerning penalties for desertion a treatise on infantry bayonet technique illustrated with plates and a decree relating to the operation of the Mexican military in Texas. The third volume contains a treatise on the dissolution of the medical corps and its replacement with individual doctors. Collectively they illustrate much about the Mexican army during the era of its wars with the Republic of Texas and then the Mexican-American War. In all a fascinating compendium of Mexican military history and an interesting collection of imprints. He Was Born In Chicago Illinois. Meyerhoff Founded His Own Agency Arthur Meyerhoff Associates In 1932 After Persuading The Wm. Wrigley Jr. Company That He Could Arrange For Newspapers To Place Advertisements For Wrigley Chewing Gum On Their Comic Pages. He Then Got The Newspapers To Agree To The Idea. During World War Ii Philip K. Wrigley Was In Charge Both Of The Wrigley Company And The Chicago Cubs Major League Baseball Club. Wrigley Decided To Found The All-American Girls Professional Baseball League As A Promotional Sideline To Maintain Interest In Baseball As The Military Draft Was Depleting Major League Rosters Of First-Line Players. He Approached Other Major League Team Owners But The Idea Was Not Well Received. Then Four Non-Major League Cities Were Selected That Were In Close Proximity To The Aagpbl Headquarters In Chicago And Close To Each Other: Rockford Of Illinois South Bend Of Indiana And Racine And Kenosha Of Wisconsin. Meyerhoff Was Given The Responsibility Of Coordinating Operations With City Officials And Civic Leaders In The Communities As Well As A Projected Budget Was Developed. In 1943 The League Made An Auspicious Debut But After The 1944 Season Wrigley Sold The Aagpbl To Meyerhoff. It Was Under Meyerhoff Management That Expansion To Six Teams As Well As The Publicity Campaign Of The Aagpbl Reached Its Peak. He Re-Organized The League So That Each Franchise Would Be Governed Through A League Board Of Directors With Representatives From Each Franchise. Each Club Now Had A Voice In The Adoption Of Rules And Regulations And The Direction Of The Sport. All Assets Were Turned Over To The New Directors And Wrigley Was No Longer Involved With The League. The Aagpbl Excelled In Attendance And Performing During The 1948 Season When 10 Teams Attracted 910000 Paid Fans. Meyerhoff Also Organized Several Companies Outside His Advertising Agency To Develop New Products. One Company He Owned Developed Pam A Substitute For Fats Or Oils That Can Be Sprayed On Pots And Pans. In The Mid-1950S When Meyerhoff Was Looking For A Side Business He Advertised For Ideas And Heard From Two Chemists Who Had Developed Something Like A Cooking Spray. First Meyerhoff Had The Formula Perfected So It Could Be Sprayed; Then He Campaigned For Grocers To Shelve Pam In The Baking Aisle With The Flours Not The Aerosol Section Next To Insecticides And Hair Spray. The Name Pam Is An Initialism For "Product Of Arthur Meyerhoff. In The 1960S Meyerhoff Wrote His Book The Strategy Of Persuasion Which Reflects His Point Of Views That The United States Information Agency Should Get Out Of The News Business And Into The Business Of Selling Democracy Abroad.
